So China is at least 50 years behind the West in suntan chic?  In the 50s, we made the switch so that a suntan indicated enough leisure time to spend outdoors, while pale skin indicates a thankless indoor factory or office job.

And we're in the throes of going the other way again, where pale skin indicates intelligence and education (bad melanoma, bad!), whereas a tan indicates either a lack of forethought about your health or underemployment.
