He's good, but honestly, if I was a team I wouldn't want the circus. I'm seeing a pattern here:

Complain about team situation
Wait for coach to get fired
Say that you're unhappy, wait for offers
Change teams

He genuinely seemed happy about Orlando except for the fact that they weren't willing to field a winning team

Persoanlly, I'd like to see what he could do, starting the season healthy here in LA. If he sucks after next season, then trade. They have to get something outta the guy.

Totally.  Also, if they keep moving those deck chairs around on the Titanic it will totally stop sinking!

Oh Dwight, please tell me you're thinking of having a prime-time ESPN hour long special to announce your decision. Because watching the fallout from that would be the best and greatest thing in the history of the world.

2013-07-05 09:32:35 AM
Also:

The Lakers also have deep concerns about their luxury tax exposure this season.

I'm giggling like a school girls at the thought of some Laker fan reading that sentence and knowing the words, but somehow unable to understand the meaning.

Did he even impregnate anyone in LA? I guess we won't find out for a while.

I hope Houston does/does not land him. I'm truly ambivalent and can see how adding Dwight could lead to multiple Finals appearances or playoff-missing, cap hell frustraton

farbekrieg: isnt kobe supposed to make 30.5m or some crazy number?

Yup. Kobe and Pau by themselves are making $49 m this season. The cap is $58m.

Oh, and the Lakers as of right now have 9 guys on contract: Kobe, Gasol, Nash, Artest, Steve Blake, Jordan Hill, Jodie Meeks, Chris Duhon, and Robert Sacre. Their only draft pick was center Ryan Kelly out of Duke in the second round. That's ~$77m worth of guys right there even without Howard, and they'll still need to scare up another 3 guys somehow just to fill out the roster. Maybe four if we assume that Kobe won't be ready for the opener. They're cap maxed so unless there's a trade coming they will only be able to offer league min contracts, which means they'll be getting scrap-heap guys at the tail end of the free agency period.

So realistically, the opening day roster of the Lakers could be Nash/Blake/Artest/Gasol/Hill, with a bench of Meeks/Duhon/Sacre/Ryan Kelly/2 or 3 guys that had sub-10 PER ratings last year. If Nash is healthy he and Gasol can get this team a few wins, but the idea of Jodie Meeks being the go-to scorer on the Lakers second unit is just hilarious to think about.

farbekrieg: isnt kobe supposed to make 30.5m or some crazy number?

Yep. Gasol will make $19.2m, MWP is down for $7.7m (mid-level exception), Nash for $9.3m. I'm really enjoying watching Jim Buss run this team into the ground.

As an Orlando fan, this whole situation seems so long ago yet its only been a year. I guess its because he didn't play in our last playoff appearance (2011).

Good luck to whoever takes him. He's good, but he isn't the same nice kid that he was when Orlando drafted him. Sure, he's not at Aaron Hernandez levels of bad guy, but he is pretty much a sheltered, religious kid who got millions thrown at him and that attracted some shiatty people.

/also reports that he could be Shawn Kemp 2.0 do not bode well for the longterm.

Pekovic is a restricted FA and whatever Howard gets, Pek will get offered a tier under it.

I really want to laugh but the lakes always seem to perform some sort of hollywood accounting that allows them to shuffle from top 5 team to top 5 team with minimal downtime (admittedly with jerry and not jim making the decisions). 04 and 92-3 are the only times i can recall where they were 'not good' and even then they were never timberwolves or kings bad.

Well it's been focusing on Kobe (with pretty solid results as you might agree) for years. Now that Kobe's getting older there will be a few years of this. Now the search begins for the new nucleus that will make LA the perenial contender. How quickly they figure THAT out is what should be interesting. Certainly means a few years of cap issues, no doubt.

Maybe the Sixers will take him, that last center they got from the Lakers worked out so well.

Don't worry, the NBA will engineer something.

They pretty much have no choice but to suck next year, then go into rebuild mode when every contract but Nash's comes off the books. Problem is, they can't tell that to their fan base, so they keep trying to fill in gaps with high profile free agents,

I hope he goes to Dallas or Golden State. I enjoy watching Houston, and don't want them to trade away Asik and Lin just to fit in Dwight Howard with all his missed free-throws and complaining/drama.

Dwight will get a max deal, without question. The only question is where, which then sets up who'll chase Pekovic, Bynum, etc.

As for Pek...he's going to get expensive, somewhere between $12-15 million. Tiago Splitter just got 36 million for four years and he isn't the player Pekovic is.

He'd really gum up the freewheeling Harden-dominated offense, I'd think.

agreed.  never got the hype.  20-10 guys are not that hard to find.  factor in the team cancer issue, as his free throw percentage, i'd stay away from him.

Last year, there were zero 20-10 guys.  Including Dwight.

Kevin Love comes to mind, but he didn't play enough games to qualify last year, and he wasn't quite 20-10 anyway.

Dwight is a dolt but you have to remember that he was playing injured last season.

In fairness, the current Lakers situation is something worthy of complaint, and the coach should be fired. If the Lakers really wanted to keep Howard, they'd fire D'Antoni.

Dallas is always weak at center and doesn't have all that many choices.  They have cleared out as much cap room as they can and it's down to get Howard or Plan B.

Hopefully Cuban realizes that Plan B means that Dirk must hit the trade market the minute Howard chooses another destination.  Cuban clinging to the German while his ankles deteriorate and his last few good years go wasted would be 'Jerry Jones Loves Aikman' level of FAIL.  Blow it up, Celtics style, and start fresh.

FTFY

No use crying over spilt milk now.  The owner has spoken and he has stated that he would rather look like a fool than hire someone he doesn't like.

We HAD an option at center with Chandler.  He let that go in his original Plan A (his first failed gamble).

There's not much left to blow up.  Dirk is pretty much it, and he's not exactly dragging the franchise down.  He's still an asset, so there's no reason to let him go.  And if Howard isn't gathered, it's not down to Plan B - we're down to roughly Plan E at this point.  Cuban has wiffed on several since the ring.

Clearly the NBA is rigged in Donald Sterling's favor. It's obvious if you study it out.

Thats what I keep hearing but I havent watched enough basketball to really know any longer, I just want the Hawks to sign him to fark over the ownership with a huge contract and nothing to show for it since they farked us over by selling the Thrashers away even though the Thrashers were averaging more in attendance than the Hawks.

F*ck them, that ownership group needs to all die.

This. The upgrade of Asik to Howard is not really that dramatic.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lin go to make way for Beverly who is showing promise ahead of schedule.

I'm not really a basketball guy, but everything I've heard about Dwight is that he's an emotional headcase.  I don't want him.  But the resident Rockets blogger here in the office is absolutely sold on him.  Says he's the best free agent on the market and basically will be the second coming that will catapult the Rockets into the Finals.  I think he's just drunk DM's Kool-Aid.

Dwight's made a Finals before.  While there are concerns, the idea that he can't win is ridiculous.
