Yes, he seemed like,a nice guy, but he presided over the collapse of the Church as a force in Western countries as well as a global pedophile scandal. How on EARTH could this guy get put in their hall of fame?

He did OK at surviving them, though.

This is a problem with the Catholics over the last 30 years, one that I really blame Pope John Paul II for.  He started the modern tradition of canonizing EVERYONE.  Like, a dozen a day.  His two successors have kept up on that.

Why can't they just say; "Yes, this person was a good man/woman who lived a good live, one that people world wide should strive for."  Why does EVERY person have to be a saint with made up miracles?

Because modern Westerners don't have the attention span to keep up with that kind of description. If you can't say it in one word -one syllable is best, but you can get away with two; three is pushing it- then it's not considered worth remembering. People would start to complain that there are no saints anymore, and the Church's opponents would write it off as being "yet another way the Church is stuck in the past."

His miracle is being so popular despite enabling and covering up systematic child abuse in his church and encouraging African Catholics to not use condoms despite the skyrocketing AIDs infection rate.

His "miracles" were of the faith healing variety. Since we seem to be pretending we believe this crap I have some more candidates for sainthood.

Fortunately, all he has to do is a couple of card tricks and waive the fourth miracle requirement.

You know, you don't have-a a patron saint for the United States, but there are some American saints. Just the last couple of years they made-a some. The first was-a about-a two years ago. Her name was-a Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Mother Seton-is-a what they call her. And she's got-a these nuns of her own order who lobby-they're real heavy-they came to Rome and everything. And it's amazing, you see. To be made a saint in-a the catholic church, you have to have-a four miracles. That's-a the rules, you know. It's-a always been that-a. Four miracles, and-a to prove it. Well, this-a Mother Seton-now they could only prove-a three miracles. But the Pope-he just waved the fourth one. He just waved it! And do you know why? It's-a because she was American. It's all-a politics. We got-a some Italian-a people, they got-a forty, fifty, sixty miracles to their name. They can't-a get in just cause they say there's already too many Italian saints, and this woman comes along with-a three lousy miracles. I understand that-a two of them was-a card tricks.

I saw "Ain't In It for My Health," a movie about Levon Helm, a few days ago.  (Highly recommended, btw, if you like Helm or The Band.)  He got a call from the Grammys, saying that his latest album was nominated for a Grammy, and he was also nominated to receive a Lifetime Achievment Award.  He could not be persuaded to attend to receive the award.

"It's all bullshiat, marketing hype, created by the suits."

Essentially.

Canonisation may be a nice show for the rubes, but merchandising is where the real money is.

Is it pretty much expected these days that if you were a Pope, that you'll be made a Saint after your death? Standards for sainthood seem to be pretty low these days, given all the miraculous crap other saints had to do to become sainted.

The woman he "cured" of Parkinsons by chatting up God likely never had Parkinsons, and relapsed back to whatever illness she really had. This is public knowledge going back to 2010.

I see the church still counts willful ignorance as a positive...

I agree, it cheapens the whole idea of sainthood. Look what they did with "the presidential medal of freedom". At first it meant something, now they give it away like candy on Halloween for political reasons and it don't mean doodly squat.

In the saint hall of fame: Here we have St Michael, the archangel. Threw Satan out of heaven. And over here we have St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. And right down the way over there is St John Paul II. He protected the church during the kiddie diddler scandals.

But enough trolling. To answer address questions on sexual abuse directly:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/21/AR20 07 102100144.html

Sexual abuse is more widespread in US School system, and almost never reported.

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/04/portland_sex_abuse_ ve rdict_lea.html

Boy Scouts of America is another institution where sexual abuse was kept under the rags since 1920s.

Other institutions have / and done as much if not bigger "coverup". The problem with Catholics is -- well -- they are not liked in the first place in the United States, and any chance to bash Catholics either by a hard-core atheist or a militant protestant can't be missed.

FTFA: "A Costa Rican woman reportedly recovered from a serious brain illness, and the Congregation concluded that the only explanation for her recovery was the fact that her family had prayed for the late pope's intercession."

That's some nice detective work there Lou.  We don't know why she got better, so it MUST be the prayer to the dead guy!  That is the ONLY explanation!!

Also FTFA: "John Paul's first miracle was the apparent curing of a 49-year-old French nun, Sister Marie Simon-Pierre Normand. She had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, the same malady which afflicted the pope himself in his later years."

Why didn't he use his miracle Parkinson's cure on himself then?  Or at the very least Muhammad Ali?  The only miracle here is that anyone believes any of this horseshiat.

Miracle # 1:
Amost single-handedly made the AIDS epidemic in Africa worse by an order of magnitude.  The RC Church has refused to promote or even acknowledge the use of condoms as a preventative measure in their missionary and medical operations throughout the continent.   They have spread misinformation that HIV can't be blocked by a condom.  They've even gone so far as to tell people that condom use can actually CAUSE the disease. (Yeah, yeah "citation needed", well, Google is your friend.)

Miracle # 2:
Convincing an entire generation of Catholics that the church is the only organ capable of handling sexual misconduct and predation by its own clergy, and organizing a deliberate, highly structured network designed specifically to shield and hide its Priests from allegations of abuse, use the passage of time to destroy evidence, intimidate and marginalize victims, and putting the vast resources of one of the richest organizations on the planet into obstructing all attempts at pursuing legal and secular remedies.

You know who else perfromed 'miracles'?

"Okay...now, turn around."

No, the DIFFERENCE is that the Catholic Church represents itself as reresenting the will of GOD.  It claims to be an arbiter of morality and the judge of what is right and wrong.  It purports to be an organization guided by the principles of Christ, and even tells you that it is the only group that can save your soul.

THat separates it HUGELY from any other entity with similar problems.  Also, nowhere on earth has the attempt to hide or bury the problem been so widespread, organized and openly konwn by such a high number of officials.
