'My initial reaction was one of complete shock,' Miss Jarvis told http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/university-tells-stud ent-to-remove-cross-necklace.html" rel=nofollow target=_blank>Fox News.
'"I was offended because I believe as a Christian woman it is my prerogative to display my faith any way I like so long as it is not harming anyone else.
'I was very hurt and felt as if the university's mission statement - which includes tolerance and inclusivity to all - was violated.'

I'd be tempted to call her a big ol drama queen but its the daily mail so it probably never happened

She's offended that she was asked not to offend anymore.  Meta.

2013-07-05 07:32:33 AM
No, not good. I like it when they're easier to spot.

Sad really... non-believers are so thin-skinned and intolerant of believers... pity... believers asre the only ones that have to worry about offending anybody? Low IQ trailer trash mentality.

As a christian, it is your duty to keep your faith to yourself, not be an AW for it.  Read the damn bible people.

2013-07-05 07:37:12 AM
Having the crucifix right there by the cleavage...so conflicted...

2013-07-05 07:37:14 AM
The supervisor then told Miss Jarvis, a devout Catholic, that she could keep the necklace on, but she had to hide it under her shirt.

She's Catholic, so you know what that means?  No condoms.

/Am I using this religion thing correctly?

2013-07-05 07:37:30 AM
I will overlook her offense.  Bring her to my chambers.

in fairness the university was a big ol drama queeen first... it wouldnt offend anyone if she wore a cross and they shouldnt have asked to to take it off, but
a) the uni arent being given an opportunity to be big ol drama queens in the media, and
b) I refer you to my previous point that its the daily mail and hence, almost certainly complete fantasy

2013-07-05 07:39:40 AM
Yeah, i sincerely doubt any of that happened.

Oh, she's Catholic? That should be ok for the Libbie Farkers. On the other hand, if she were, say, one of them there Evangelicals...

A spokeswoman for the publicly-funded university said the case was an example of 'political correctness that got out of hand' and apologized.
Susan Kashack told Fox that Sonoma State President Ruben Arminana was 'angered' when he learned of the incident.
She said the supervisor was 'completely wrong' to ask Miss Jarvis to remove her cross.
Ms Kashack said the university is trying to reach Miss Jarvis so officials can apologize for the misunderstanding.

She isn't interested in an apology. The Right Wing Outrage Factory believes they have a gotcha moment, and they are going to get all the mileage out of it they can.

Lots of things have angered and/or offended me over the years.  It never occurred to me to contact the NEWS about it!

2013-07-05 07:44:24 AM
Would an Indian student be asked to remove her Brindi Dot or a Muslim student her head covering? If not then neither should she be forced to hide her cross.

I would not mind asking her boyfriend to demonstrate exactly how Catholic she is.

If I may be offended or unwelcome by someone wearing a hijab...should they also not be required to remove it?

Yeah, sounds like one rogue idiot supervisor that caused this, and it has been addressed by her superiors.  Time for everyone to simmer down, and let the girl wear her jewelry in peace.

Better:
A rogue STUDENT supervisor.  This wasn't even an university employee.  This was just a temp hourly student douche.

Toxicphreke: If I may be offended or unwelcome by someone wearing a hijab...should they also not be required to remove it?

When you find the verse in the Bible that demands all Christians publicly wear a crucifix, we can begin that discussion. Heck, when you find a denomination that makes that a public requirement of all of its adherents, and show this young woman was a member of said sect, we can start it.

Personally, I would not have asked her to remove it, particularly if it was the only allusion to her religion she made. Now on the other hand, if she was also recruiting for the Campus Crusade for Christ while giving the tour, I would also not have asked her to remove it. I would have fired her.

2013-07-05 07:52:52 AM
Miss Jarvis' mother Debbie told Fox: 'She doesn't wear the cross as a fashion statement. It's a statement of her faith.

That shiat ain't in the Bible, lady. Faith doesn't require objects.

But yes, it was dumb to ask her to conceal it.

2013-07-05 07:53:02 AM
kinda telling that photos are ripped from her bookface page rather than taken by the paper's photographer

did she even know the story was being written?

2013-07-05 07:53:06 AM
She's just trying to provoke people by wearing the cross, just like the jews in Europe did back in the 1930's by wearing the star of david around all the time.

And I quote:

Satan is real and VERY ACTIVE!
- Tennisgeorge, Downington, PA, USA

Only one way for the college to apologize. Repay all of her college tuition, pay for the remaining time she has in college., pay her compensation for her torment and most importantly, the one who said that she must remove it, publicly apologizes to her at the stadium, filled with students.
- Katina Cooper, Santa Barbara

middle eastern students can keep their sacks however
- Spike, melbourne, australia

Those are just my favorite three being displayed right now.  Either way, Matthew 6:5 has my response to all of this.  But I'm guessing she conveniently forgets that one all the time.

You're a Christian, right? FORGIVE THEM.

It might be useful to show an example of how a Daily Mail story works:

http://childlessbychoiceproject.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/not-having-ki ds -is-not-best-thing-i.html

Basically they make up quotes, invent people and events that don't exist, and so on. There are probably real people involved in the story, and at least one or two facts about them are correct, but the rest is just invention to fit the papers viewpoint on the subject. The comparison to the Weekly World News is apt - it is just rather than being silly/jokey and obviously fake, the Daily Mail invents things to fit a political agenda instead, and thus their invented parts are believable, especially to those predisposed to their biases.

Done. I'll assume I should heed Matthew 5:15 then temper it with some Matthew 6:5, since that's the order in which it's written .

There are people who really like MLP on this site.  If they were to wear a MLP shirt to a job function, it would still be inappropriate.

There are people who really like beer on this site.  If they were to wear beer-related things to a job function, it would still be inappropriate.

There are people who really like steak on this site.  If they were to wear steak-related things to a job function, it would still be inappropriate.

No one wants to deal with an employee who makes a side-agenda that's not related to work into a work issue, and no one should have to.

1. No faith requirement to wear a cross.
2. She was working for the state government (Sonoma State University) at the time.

Seems pretty cut and dry.
