AverageAmericanGuy: Her fiancee seems to be just kind of standing on the shore watching this all unfold. She seems driven and aggressive. He seems passive and weak.

I give this marriage 6 years and two kids.

She saw it first, she's more qualified than he is and he knows it.  He was right to let her do it.

AverageAmericanGuy: That's part of my point. He took no initiative in saving the boy once he saw that his bride to be was already on her way.

I bet he plays a lot of XBox.

I think he did exactly the right thing--stayed out of her way.

Salmon handed the boy back to his grateful mother and explained that she is a trained lifeguard and paramedic. Coincidentally, her fiance Matt Werner, 33, is an EMT and Beerger is also a trained paramedic.

She's trained in water rescue, and he's not. Had you RTFA, you might know that.

redmid17: Been awhile since I've seen that movie

Honestly? One of the best movies ever made. Really underrated. Really sad it didn't get a MST3K treatment.

Also strangely prophetic about Detwoit, for some reason.

Honestly, in this day an age, why would any adult male rescue a child? Especially in a wet environment where you may have to perform mouth to mouth? 30 years ago you'd be a hero, today you'd be a registered sex offender. The fiancé did the right thing by trying to let natural selection occur.

Who intentionally takes an engagement photo with someone else's kids in the background?

Nominative determinism.

redmid17: Good to note that the water is hip deep at most then. Can't have another EMT or two drowning to save the boy...

Riiiiight.

So someone who's untrained in water rescue should jump into a river when there's already someone WITH water rescue training performing one?

Thanks. Always nice to hear from the armchair rescue randies in the audience.

Or maybe he noticed that the water was a foot deep?
