Fair advantage.  Grunt back.

(Not saying it's not annoying, and that MaSha/de Brito match was ridiculous, but it's not like There Should Be A Rule or anything.  Bad form, but legal.)

There are a few female tennis players I'd like to grunt with.

So, what they are saying is that some people make noise when exerting themselves in some fashion and others don't, so they complain.
Of course, the folks complaining have been playing the sport for years, and this isn't a new thing. So, here's a suggestion. Get over yourself.

I remember someone saying a few years ago that Maria Sharapova did not grunt when training... and the same source said that she was training with the same intensity she would use during a real match.

This is why you should only play tennis in the cloud coin zone.

Maybe if they didnt require absolute silence from spectators the grunts would be less noticeable.

I would say, if you discourage your fans from cheering, your legitimacy as a sport should be questioned. But people that watch tennis (or golf) aren't fans; they're spectators. So this adds a new axiom. If your sport has spectators instead of fans, your legitimacy should be further questioned.

It's a sport if A) there is some objective measurement of who is winning, like hitting a ball at a certain target area, and B) your respiration and pulse exceed some threshold level while playing. Tennis is a sport, and even international ping pong would probably be a sport. But yeah, golf is just a giant outdoor board game. And anything that involves dancing and judging is just entertainment.

i thought this was realized out years ago. i'm not into table tennis but years ago there was a famous player who only used one side of the paddle. he put foam on the other side to deaden the sound. i remember a episode of 1950's tv sitcom 'life with elizabeth' and in it betty white was klicking a castanet while playing tennis tennis to fool her opponent.

Next up golf grunting.  Then pool.

You don't have to have idiots screaming in face paint and shoulder pads with spikes sticking out to call something a sport. That said, grunting is relatively new and is annoying as a player or a spectator.
I've noticed that grunters grunt more when they are losing, Not that I ever won anything.

It's not unfair if everyone is allowed to do it.

The only other time I hear women "grunt" like that is when they're squirting all over the damn place. So yeah...tennis is like porn.
