Because the wiretapping and abuse aren't being done right?

Lousy failing Obama!

I would hope to hell that conservatives are drinking their Tard Juice.  Obama put nanomachines in the drinking water and the oceans.  The only safe drinking water in the country comes from Tard, Indiana because it is the only place in the country with a Founding Fathers Water Bottling Plant, and they bottle water in plastic just as the Founding Fathers would have wanted.  It's the only way to keep the nanomachines out of my drinking water.  Yes.  The nanomachines.  The nanomachines must pay.  All of them.  Every one of them.  The nanomachines called me crazy.  But we'll see who the crazy one is.

It's called Security Butch, and its a dress up party and celebration. When the crowd dies out, they smoke the choicest weed seized in the last year and talk about who had the biggest bust.

Alex I expect to get paid for this. It doesn't must write itself..

I'm not familiar with the source, but seriously 'Murica, if this quote is true: According to Nicole Nishida of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Americans will celebrate their "independence" from tyranny by submitting to random bag searches. you seriously need to step back and reconsider your government.

And Happy 4th to the NSA agents reading this.  Sucks you have to work today.

Why do they have to do this on the 4th?  Nothing says freedom like good old fashioned fascism.

Wait, I've got a great slogan.  No Fourth on the 4th!  Get it?  Cuz they get to search your bags and person!  HAHA!

This is the article they reference from my fox LA

And here's a lovely gem:

The enemy knows too much already.

What we need to know, or rather be reminded of, is that the threats, homegrown and imported, are all too real.  And in one way, we're all undercover agents who need to be aware of our surroundings.

See something strange? Say something.

And if you see a deputy or special agent at Union Station,  you might also want to say "thank you".

#2 Most of the new "revenue" that will be raised by tax increases in 2013 will come out of the pockets of the middle class.

Complete lock down of an entire city, no fly zone, public and private transportation stopped, swat team house to house searches, cell towers shut down in Boston just to find one teenager who may or may not be armed (or had a bomb) was the beginning of the end for personal freedoms.
I wouldn't take a backpack to a fireworks display, but some folks will and they will be searched. Anytime there will be big crowds this kind of activity will continue to happen. Boston was the first time, but won't be the last. It was a practice run for law enforcement.

Because peacefully exercising a constitutionally-protected enumerated right is clear justification for "scrutiny" (via violating another one of those enumerated rights).

Mock26: cig-mkr: Complete lock down of an entire city, no fly zone, public and private transportation stopped, swat team house to house searches, cell towers shut down in Boston just to find one teenager who may or may not be armed (or had a bomb) was the beginning of the end for personal freedoms.
I wouldn't take a backpack to a fireworks display, but some folks will and they will be searched. Anytime there will be big crowds this kind of activity will continue to happen. Boston was the first time, but won't be the last. It was a practice run for law enforcement.

Indeed. For privacy rights, GW was bad, Obama is worse, and whomever follows Obama will likely be worse still, whatever his/her party affiliation. And why shouldn't they be? People talk like they care, but in elections 'its the economy, stupid'. If you seem to be the choice thst promises $$, you'll win and stay in office.

Also, respecting privacy now would be seen as weakness when the next terror attack is eventually successful, and the political cost of that would be higher than some ACLU whining now.

You can argue that we aren't quite in a police state since full-city lock downs that include warrantless house-to-house searches only happen when there are dangerous teenagers to catch, but it's hard argue that we are not under constant surveillance.

3. Police will be conducting searches of bags and coolers for reasons of public saftey

You can of course be searched at anytime given probable cause, however when they put it on a sign as special rules for entry into what I assume is a public park, I think most people would assume that these searches will be either random or mandatory to enter the park.

Like someone else said they would never wear a backpack to a large event. When we are at the point where you have to make decisions based on avoiding police harassment when your otherwise just going about your business and harming no one, we have a problem.

I would say that a well-adjusted adult could look at a sign like that, giggle or scowl (probably both) at the unintended irony, and continue on their merry way.

Things are only going to get worse, and when the police are going house to house searching everyone without warrants or probable cause i hope you all remember how you fought so hard online to allow it.

Don't know how I skipped over #3. But those are special rules for a particular day, and I hardly imagine cops will be frisking people or anything like that. Haven't you ever been to a ballpark or something where they do a bag check? Big f-ing deal. It's not like attendance is mandatory or something.

And I don't know - having a cop ask me to show him my bag is a far far leap from "harassment".

The thing that's funniest to me about all the hysterics over the security measures at Boston's 4th of July concert is that the same people who are screaming ninnies over "they're crushing our freedom" would be  yelling the loudest about how the cops didn't do enough, if God forbid something happened.  Folks just like to complain.

I understand the need for security, but holy hell, DHS should not be in charge of a Boy Scout parade, let alone actual security. Can we just get someone with some basic competence and PR skills to do this, please?

/Sure, it's InfoWars, but what are the odds it  isn't true, given typical DHS shenanigans?

And this is why when we let news organizations become vest pocket propaganda arms for people protecting moneyed agendas or web sites selling urgency or "who's your pal?" talking heads as being of unimpeachable credibility, we lost the plot.  We don't need any more dime store messiahs.  We need Walter Cronkite.

Really, is there anything, short of disbanding, that the Department of Homeland Security can do to make us feel safer?  And do you know of anybody who was worried that the Boston Marathon bombers, either the dead one or the captured one, were planning something for today?

List for us a single thing that Obama's done that's been an abuse of presidential power.  Do you think for a moment that a black president can do anything, legal or not, that's not scrutinized to within an inch of its life?  Faux News is already exploding daily over shiat Obama didn't do.

Go ahead, list one thing.  I'll help:

I wouldn't take a backpack to a fireworks display, but some folks will and they will be searched. Anytime there will be big crowds this kind of activity will continue to happen. Boston was the first time, but won't be the last. It was a practice run for law enforcement.

I'm sitting on the lawn at Mt. Vernon right now. No security at all here.
But if we go down to the mall for fireworks tonight, they'll search our bags before letting us in to the 'safety zone'- a fenced-off area around the mall.

And this year, they're saying no backpacks. How the hell are you supposed to have a picnic?

It is well known that they were originally planning to bomb the Esplanade today, but finished making the bombs early.  There could be copycats. But most folks up here aren't worried.

You could adjust?  It's really not that hard.  But then, anyone who actually goes to the Esplanade on the 4th is probably mentally damaged somehow to begin with, so it could be difficult for them.

cig-mkr
Complete lock down of an entire city -never happened, about an 8 sq block area of Watertown was shut down, that's it

no fly zone, -don't know what you're talking about

public and private transportation stopped,- the T was shut down, don't know what you mean about private transportation because I was able to drive to, in, and around Boston that day no problem

swat team house to house searches, -only in the area where he was suspected to be

cell towers shut down in Boston -only in the immediate aftermath of the bombing, in the immediate area of the bombing, because they thought there could be more and perhaps they were set off by cell-phone

just to find one teenager who may or may not be armed (or had a bomb) -this is the closest you've come to saying something true. Yes, we wanted the f*cker caught right away - what's your problem with that

was the beginning of the end for personal freedoms. -oh, that's right, you're a hysterical, defeatist, gutless coward, in addition to being a complete moron.

I've not ever heard the national mall called the esplanade, but hey, I'm just a dumb Maryland girl- what do I know?

Besides, it's not that bad. It's actually better with the security, no rolling entire kegs around with you, or someone blasting a bottle rocket into some poor kid's face.

But, I go to music festivals, so I probably have a higher tolerance for my fellow humans acting stupid than most.

And adjusting is ok. I adjusted to being inspected to go to the museums, and onto the mall for fireworks in the past, I just think ratcheting up security yet again is overdoing it.
And I was already used to being treated like a criminal just going to rock concerts for the past 25 years.

But that's the teabaggers for you.  They express extremely hostile views towards the government, then wonder why the government gives them extra scrutiny.  "Why is the IRS asking if my organization called 'Taxes Are a Fascist Plot To Make Your Kid Marry a Homo' is engaged in political activity?"

Not very effectively, i'd say.  And the false equivalence of Repub vs Dem just doesn't work. The number of things republicans brag about being afraid of dwarfs that of the dems.

Absolutely this and absolutely insane.  The wiretapping, the abuse of presidential power...Richard Nixon would be rolling in his grave right now.

The NSA would be doing this no matter who was president. It's what they've been working towards ever since the NSA was created. The only way to stop it would be to shut down the NSA, and they're making sure they know everything there is to know about anybody who could potentially do that. Eventually, we'll nuke them from space... it's the only way to be sure.

I somehow misread you saying you were at Mt Vernon as you saying you were at Mt Auburn, which is in Cambridge, so I thought you were around Boston, especially since so much of this discussion lately has been about security preparations for here today, in light of the Marathon Bombings.

As far as I know the National Mall has never been called the Esplanade, because the Esplanade is in Boston. Apologies for the confusion.

Not to mention, since guns were brought up, that the current NRA is built upon fearmongering. If LaPierre didn't have "they're coming to take our guns away", what would he have?
