(Forbes)   The T-shirt turns 100. It seems like only yesterday that the very first one was imprinted with "John McCain For Senate"   (forbes.com) divider line 30

So I wanted to make a vague attempt to wear something American-made today. So I grabbed an old-enough-to-not-be-Chinese shirt. The tag says "assembled in USA, components made in Mexico".

How many components are IN a tshirt? I'm assuming this means "Mexicans in an El Paso factory sewed the tag into the shirt."

Tangential thought: I wonder how many people stop and and consider that they are nothing more than walking billboards for clothes designers. I usually wear basic black tees with jeans. No logos, slogans or company phrases on them. The damn companies should pay us for that.

I do wear levis jeans because I believe in them and the product. But fark companies like Nike and Adidas.

/rant off

I have pictures of my mother and her friends dressed like Marlon Brando from Streetcar. They were 15 at the time.

All my tees are geek-related novelty ones.  The only ones I own that advertise anything are my Fangtasia shirt (True Blood) and my Don't Blink shirt (Doctor Who).  You could *maybe* count my Velma & Scooby Zombie Hunter shirt promoting an alternate universe Hanna-Barbera, but it'd be a tough sell.

In the Good Old Days (tm) the advertisement translated into a discount bringing the high quality clothes (remember them?) down to a reasonable price.

Since every company gets to say We Did It First, Jockey says they made the first ones for the USC Trojans in 1932. http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jun/1 5/news/la-fe-atr-t-shirt-100-yea rs-old-20130528

Not "imprinted" so much as "calligraphed" with John McCain's election slogan, "one in the Senate is worth two in the chin."

You know who else liked to wear legible clothing?

I think this guy might be the real inspiration of t-shirts worn without a shirt over them. In any case, almost no respectible person would have been caught dead outdoors in a t-shirt prior to Jimmy Dean and Marlon Brando's time. It was they who made "t-shirts" cool. Before then they were just undergarments worn by wife-beaters.

IIRC, the centennial celebration of the Yellow Kid was in 1994. I have the t-shirt still. I'd like to have it made into a pillow or something.
