It's photographed because mail sorting machines operate off of OCR. Now, how long the image is retained is unclear.

Philip Francis Queeg: It's photographed because mail sorting machines operate off of OCR. Now, how long the image is retained is unclear.

Right. I know that the sorting machines use OCR, and I have no problem with them photographing letters and parcels in order to perform mail routing and delivery.

However, I feel that the long-term storage of such photos for law-enforcement purposes is somewhat troubling. As an analogy, I have no problem with a police officer observing things as they patrol around, but I have concerns about cameras operated by the police that keep records of the movement of people for long periods of time. Cameras in shops or something? No worries, but something like the CCTV systems in London? That doesn't sit well with me.

If you think that some guy who was the spokesman for a eco-terrorist grouip equates to someone ordinary who sent out wedding cards like in subby's (you?) tfa, you have a very serious disconnect going on.

Why? Why is forced forgetfulness a reasonable assumption for the government. You willingly gave them the information to use, now they are using it, if you didn't think this was a possible use you weren't thinking very hard. This is why I never really had a problem with the whole metadata thing, because this is the exact governmental equivalent that seemed like people wouldn't freak out about. Apparently I was wrong.

If they were to adopt as their platform  a goal of making Only that which causes a real and material harm to the Life, Liberty or Property of others through Fraud or Force shall be illegal then they'd get somewhere.  Using the carrot and stick approach to reward and punishment.  The reward is freedom.  The punishment is swift and severe for causing said harm.

Well, eco-terrorist isn't a legal term either.  Regardless, I consider the actions of burning a cross to intimidate or repeated destruction of private property with pipe bombs and incendiaries to be terroristic actions worthy of government action and not simply an 'unauthorized fire'.

You would probably feel the same if you were on the victims end of the actions.  Both the Klan and the ELF intend to terrorize with their actions.

Wouldn't that mean that Libertarians would need to actually have principled, thought out positions - unlike that of a rebellious teen after being asked to stop skateboarding? Because they've been around for a while and are still pushing the Randian paranoid feudalism.

You say that with no irony whatsoever don't you?

The mere fact that property crimes are TERRORISM proves how easily the gov't can take any issue, rebrand it as TERRORISM, or NATIONAL SECURITY or whatever and suddenly The Rule of Law becomes a perverse and perverted tool to suppress and silence anything the gov't doesn't happen to like at the moment. Now made extra easy with all the Total Information Awareness apologists gushing support for a completely unaccountable "just trust us" style of gov't surveillance.

Leslie James Pickering has done a lot of wrong and has been arrested multiple times for property damage and arson.  The organization he is part of burns personal and public property and uses devices such as incendiaries to do it.  He is not just a typical citizen.  He is dangerous.
