Police said Wallace then started a 60-second countdown that the suspect warned would end up with him harming the child.

That's when police Capt. David Huff walked up to Wallace and shot him point-blank in the head.

Dayum.

Kudos to you, Captain.

Why the hell did he take the girl hostage to begin with?

I'm guessing this guy was lousy at chess. He thought he had a checkmate, but the knight nailed him.

Had to be suicide by cop if he started a 60 second countdown..

2013-07-03 01:20:03 PM
Why? Is there any reason why he would do this?

Cythraul: Why the hell did he take the girl hostage to begin with?

"History of mental problems" was mentioned on the local news.

In the security footage, he walks into the store while talking on his cell phone. Grabs a cart, shops a bit, and then grabs the kid out of nowhere.

That's a shame, but I can't really fault the police officer for using lethal force - if he said he was going to hurt the little girl at the end of the countdown, he had to do something.

2013-07-03 01:28:27 PM
That'll learn em'

2013-07-03 01:29:18 PM
I think that he wanted the police to kill him. He had plenty of time to hurt the girl if that was his real intention. And the policeman had time to draw his gun, walk up to him, and shoot. He could have stabbed her then, dropped her and tried to escape, etc.

Enjoy your wrongful death lawsuit, sir.

Suicide by cop. If he wanted to harm a child -why didn't he just do it? Why wait for the police?

Meh, dude asked for it, and while a wrongful death suit will be settled if it comes to fruition, (only because it's cheaper than a trial), no jury in this state would award the family jack or shiat.

See, that's something I have a problem with.  By just paying the family off they're perpetuating the problem - the next time somebody has a loser case they'll still threaten to get the settlement money.  Better to spend more right now and make an example out of him, and any other bullshiat wrongful death suits they face, by making sure they not only get nothing but get slapped with attorney's fees for bringing a frivolous suit in the first place.

If you're killed or injured during the commission of a felony neither you nor your family should have grounds to sue.

The suit isn't going to come from the family of the deceased.  It'll come from the little girl's family, upset that she's sustained irreversible hearing loss.

I don't think it was suicide-by-cop, I think it was just stupid.  There's a thing I see on TV all the time I call "the magic gun" - the idea that if I point a gun at you, you are forced to do what I say.  Like "go in that room and let me torture you to death for weeks, or else I'll shoot you."  Doesn't make logical sense.  But people in the real world think that the threat of violence compels  obedience, and don't know what to do if someone refuses.

Fark that, she was about to suffer irreversible respiratory and circulatory loss.

I'm curious as to how many posts it'll take before some asshat comes in bashing the cop for using deadly force instead of injuring the guy or trying harder to talk him down. Seems a bit odd that they tried negotiating with the guy for 30 minutes and suddenly dude decides he's gonna countdown until he hurts the kid. Seems like it was intentional suicide by cop, but there's no real way of knowing I guess unless there's audio tapes along with the video. Either way, as much as I dislike cops they did the right thing in this instance.
