steverockson: serial_crusher: steverockson: LlamaGirl: steverockson: Which one?

All of them. But Aryan Aaryn the most.

She's horrible but I think the worst guy is the redneck who was talking about Hitler and the medical experiments that were done on the Jews.  Just jawdroppingly ignorant.

I didn't see the actual video, but I'm a little suspicious that the article specifically called out the part where he "praised Hitler's speaking abilities."  I mean, Hitler was a bad guy, but let's not pretend his career as a dictator didn't owe a lot of its success to his public speaking skills.  Dude could really rile up an angry mob or two.

My gut reaction to that kind of seemingly irrational butthurt is to assume the other butthurt associated without it is also irrational.  What'd the guy actually say?

I'm looking for the direct quote, but I read that he said that the medical experiments done on the Jews was beneficial. That's what gave me pause.I don't really have a problem praising Hitler's speaking abilities, it's the talk of the medical experiments that really made me think the guy was an idiot.

Our entire knowledge of the human body's tolerance for cold is based on Nazi medical experiments. All of our medical treatments of extreme cold are based on the data collected in those experiments. Anyone who has ever been saved from hypothermia has benefited from those experiments.

Spencer's phrasing is pretty important, and the fact that there are no quotes in any of the media suggest that, in context, his statements are just not that sensational. It looks like they are just lumping him in to give some heat to the story.

We learned from them, and it was the only controlled experiments of hypothermia where people died, but to claim "our entire knowledge" or "All" our medical treatments are based off them is simply not true.

Kali76: Alleged racism generated huge ratings and publicity for the British version of Big Brother a few years ago. It involved a pretty trashy woman basically bullying an Indian actress and using terms the audience thought were racist. Led to the actress winning the game.

Plus the woman who made the racist statements got kicked out, mocked in by the press, and died a slow painful death from cervical cancer. Karma is a biatch. Hopeful, history will repeat itself with Little Miss Aryan.

The Great EZE: We're approaching the 14th year of this craze (I like to start at the premier of the first U.S. Survivor)

You need to go father to 1992, when MTV infected society via The Real World. The only thing worthwhile from that show was Pedro Zamora and Judd Winick from the San Fran season in 1994.

Of course, the Patient Zero for this was An American Family in 1973, which made the Loud Family (apropos name, by the way) a household name.

I just realized something... Patient Zero....Pedro Zamora...both died of AIDS...I have to go warn Pia Zadora before it's too late!

I was thinking about that, but I chose to go with Survivor cause it more or less "weaponized" reality TV by turning it into a competition with 6- or 7-figure payouts. Also because MTV will never be as mainstream as CBS. Real World is/was cute. Survivor made it serious business.

I like semantic arguments as much as the next guy, but the word "based" is pretty damn broad and the history is not controversial.

The use of Nazi data in developing the medical treatment of hypothermia is the classic example of a dilemma in medical ethics. The data is not just one of many sources of knowledge of how the human body reacts to freezing temperatures, it is the only source. All the subsequent research and treatment is based on that data. If it was just one of many sources then subsequent research would not have made use of the data, given the conditions it was obtained under.

If my statement is "simply not true" then it should be pretty simple to elaborate on your statement and provide some examples of life saving medical treatment for freezing that does not rely on the body of knowledge created by  the data from those experiments.
