No way CBS didn't know exactly what the contestants were like.  It's all about the casting and the controversy to get viewers in their seats.

Honestly, how can white people have a problem with Asians? The guys are generally pretty mellow and the women are awesome. I don't see the problem.

The only answer I can give you, is we're stupid as species. We appear to never learn and collectively we repeat the same damn mistakes generation after generation. I'm talking all races, everyone's on that list.

tmz is reporting on it, the cute blonde told an asian "housemate" to shut up and go make some rice.  She also told another housemate to be careful what they say in the dark because the black housemate could be hiding in there and nobody would know it.  If the second one was a joke it would be kinda funny, especially if it wasn't a white chick telling it.

Unlike the government, TV producers are obliged to have mastery of counting. Drama is expensive. Drama as played by non-unionized, non-actors that only requires blocking notes and a heavy editing commitment is not expensive. It's the Pinterest of programming and suits precisely the summer viewing demographic.

Had reality TV not been invented, it would be necessary to do so in today's splintered, dying-off audience for network TV fare.

It seems pretty decent so far. Dean Norris from Breaking Bad should make a good villain, and I found it hilarious that Stephen King kills off The Lawnmower Man by the end of the first episode. The only part that seemed weird was the councilman's son going from lovesick puppy to psycho in half an hour.

The people that go on these reality shows and make complete idiots out of themselves must either be getting payed a pretty nice sum of money to intentionally do it or must be the biggest idiots in the world. Knowing that everything you do has the possibility of being aired to the public, and knowing that even the smallest negative thing you do will be edited to look like something major, you would think people would treat this like the biggest job interview of their lives and try to come off as intelligent and emotionally stable as possible.

I remember going to see Rice University play Tulane one year way back and the Tulane student section chanting "What comes out of a Chinaman's ass. Rice, Rice, Rice." Now it's "go eat a bowl of rice" Somewhere along the line racial slurs have gotten really lame.

Not as a race, but as a culture. The asian guy who works as a pharmacist who went to NYU and has been here since he was three? Yeah, hes awesome. His grandparents who he had shipped over because they would have been left to die back in some rice field? Them, not so much. They're barely human.

I'm looking for the direct quote, but I read that he said that the medical experiments done on the Jews was beneficial. That's what gave me pause.I don't really have a problem praising Hitler's speaking abilities, it's the talk of the medical experiments that really made me think the guy was an idiot.

My personal experience is on the military bases.  Try to imagine a culture where there is absolutely no respect for personal space or property.  If they want it, they take it.  If you're holding it and they want it, they'll hit you to take it regardless of your age.  Then add in a hate for anybody not from the Philipines.

It's a culture of trashiness and racism.  Them, arabs and warhoops are the three cultures that I cannot stand one bit.

That was Jordan and Jeff from like three years ago.  Jordan is stunningly stupid, but nice and good looking.  Jeff said his share of homophobic things, but it was overlooked by CBS because he was popular.  He was kind of a bully his second season, and he's no rocket scientist either.

Archimedes' Principal: BizarreMan: No way CBS didn't know exactly what the contestants were like.  It's all about the casting and the controversy to get viewers in their seats.

THIS. Contestants have already taken and 'passed'  psychological screening before being allowed to be on the show. It's a careful mix of personalities to get a desired result.

/ 'Survivor' does the same thing. It's stated in the application that you fill out to be on the show.

The main reason for the psych test is to cover CBS' ass. In the original Swedish show that Survivor was based on, one of the contestants killed himself because he was kicked off the show.

So if one of the contestants decides to eat a bullet or go on a killing spree, CBS can say, "We checked to make sure he wasn't unstable! You can't sue us!"

It's a culture of trashiness and racism.  Them, arabs and warhoops are the three cultures that I cannot stand one bit.

I was in the service, stationed San Diego, friended a Fillipino, super nice guy, great family, their gatherings weren't unlike any other cultures really, just more adobo.  They were/are proud if not a little insecure about their heritage, like most minorities in the US probably are.  A fierce attachment to material goods and displays of wealth, the young women especially seemed overtly superficial. Sure, a symptom of the times but they had an obsessive quality to their attachment, a very enviable group.

The Fillipino men I knew in the navy, were no different the average service man, cheating on wives during deployment, lazy, and racist, always looking out for each other, which, again, is probably something of a necessity for minority groups in US, but all non-Fillipinos were discounted.

The Fillipinas, civillian, the "West Pack Widows", were always on the lookout for a higher pay-grade, shopping their wares as soon as their men left port.

I'm mestizo, 5'8", and was the center for their pickup basketball games, I liked that.

tmz is reporting on it, the cute blonde told an asian "housemate" to shut up and go make some rice.  She also told another housemate to be careful what they say in the dark because the black housemate could be hiding in there and nobody would know it.  If the second one was a joke it would be kinda funny, especially if it wasn't a white chick telling it.

These sound like carefully scripted "racist" remarks. just enough for people to gasp at but not enough for firings. I think the writers are threading the needle on being edgy with faux controversy.

You may be correct on the "Pacific Islander" part as that definitely denotes race, but I don't think I could apply for citizenship in the Republic of the Philippines and then start going around calling my tall, white guy self a Filipino. The real test is if they show it.  This season one of the twists is that each week, one person (voted for by the viewers) gets to select someone else to go "on the block" (be one of the 3 that can be evicted).  If they don't show her being, well, herself, then she, being fairly pretty, might get voted for by people who don't watch the feeds or follow the news. This season, hiding it means supporting the hatred.  I've disliked Aaryn since the first night (of Big Brother After Dark) when she suggested 2 of the male houseguests should be on brokeback mountain (I don't remember exactly how she phrased it) and had an expression that suggested she thought she was being especially cruel as she said it.

McCrae, the Pizza Delivery guy, on the other hand, outright told his closest friend on the show that she was going too far, even though she didn't appear (to me) to be purposefully mean spirited.  It seemed her comments were just trying to be offensive in the same manner as dead baby jokes.  Distasteful, sure. But not out of spite.

The Canadian Big Brother has the live feeds for free, but I still barely found the time to watch them.  Except at night, but everyone was always sleeping then.

Heard mention of that a while ago, didn't know it was out yet.  Will check it out despite my doubts about the premise.

Small correction, he's actually Big Jim's (Dean Norris's) son.

Non-correction - Big Jim is the councilman, and Junior is his son, and is psycho.
I've really liked the first couple episodes, even with Jeff Fahey dropping as quickly as he did.

The show that actually surprised me recently was Siberia - I expected it to be the typical NBC shiatfest, but they are pulling off a passable-looking reality show. Dunno how it's going to fare when "Bear Grylls' Drink Your Own Piss or Die" reality competition becomes the lead-in at 9:00, though...

I don't know why not. Are there persons of African descent living in the Pacific Islands who self-identify as African-Filipinos? I don't know that, either. Perhaps it's just my own form of unintentional racism, but when I think of "Filipinos" I picture ethnically-Asian-appearing people who are natives of the Philippines, not just somebody who happened to move to the Philippines and get citizenship.

Hasn't the writers guild been pissed off about this for awhile? I think it was during or before the last writers strike where they were pushing so that the editors who cut the episodes of various reality shows, and essentially put the story together had to be WGA members.

Jeff Fahey's character lived longer in the series than he did in the book though.

We haven't seen this weeks episode yet.  Bad time at home Monday night that ended up with my wife's cat dying.  :(  Anyway.  I'm wondering how far into the psycho of Junior they will go.  Necrophilia would be a tough sell for a network show.

I was a Big Brother fan for about the first 12 seasons. I watched the first episode of this one and realized I finally outgrew the show. It's like the producers didn't realize that The Onion's "Sex House" was supposed to be a satire of them and decided to make the show more like that.

The calls of racism, homophobia, and sexism sound like the what happens when your audience becomes millions of high school kids who spend their summers updating their Tumblr blogs. Not that those comments weren't utterly dickish, not that I won't enjoy reading about the bad things that happen to those contestants in due time, but there used to be a time not long ago when you had to EARN being called a racist. Archie Bunker looks at those quotes and wonders where CBS got all those bleeding heart liberals from.

Seriously... eleventy bajillion channels on cable and satellite, plus television programming and documentaries on history, science and technology accessible since the 40's, and movies since the 20's... and this is the best people can find and that programmers can put on? Even the Discovery channel, the History channel, the Military channel and The Learning Channel, all "go-to" places on the cable box when you wanted to fill your mind and not empty it, are now full of sh*t like "Ice Road Truckers" "Deadliest Catch", "Miami Ink", "Extreme Makeover", "What not to Wear" and motherf*cking "Honey f*cking Boo Boo".

More media available than 1,000,000 people could ever watch in their lifetimes if they were strapped to a chair and made to watch 16 hours a day from the time they were 5 years old... and this is what these media morons put on. But it's not their fault... it's the fault of the people who watch this sh*t... the dumbasses.

Barricaded Gunman: Honestly, how can white people have a problem with Asians? The guys are generally pretty mellow and the women are awesome. I don't see the problem.

They drive?

texdent: The hot blonde, Aaryn?, has been dropped by her modeling agency according to TMZ. That's going to be a shock to her when she gets out.

Maybe their first clue should have been her name?

If you don't immediately see that as a reason why a white woman might have a problem with an asian woman, you don't know women very well.

FuryOfFirestorm: Gosling: Pumpernickel bread: I didn't even know that show was still on the air.   Not news to anyone here, but they don't pick ordinary well adjusted people to be on that show.  I'm guessing this is just a desperate ploy for viewers.

They don't pick ordinary well-adjusted people to be on any reality show unless you happen to be a webcomic artist.

Judd Winick nods in agreement.

Barry and Jeremy concur.

The model-actors they populate the show with these days must not have made any old cat ladies flick their beans while their 17 cats mew in shame. A few years back some guy said homophobic shiat and the network didn't even address it because all of the housefraus thought he was a hunk

These are TV Characters. Just because these morons are saying stupid shiat does not mean this is the way the network feels too. Let the idiots look like idiots.

Yeah, he works for the network now, and appeared on two other reality shows after that.  He actually did pre-interviews for this season.

Rapmaster2000: Huge swaths of America are looking for racist role models and there are few outlets for that thanks to the upper-middle class sensibilities that steer our culture - what lower classes refer to with disdain as "political correctness".

rewind2846: The type of dumb-ass people who would watch these dumb-assed programs are they type of dumb-asses who think this type of racist, homophobic dumbassery  is normal and acceptable.

CBS is playing to their lowest dumbass denominator. Somebody's gotta buy those sugary snacks, fast food sh*tburgers and HFC 3 liter sodas.

Irony is dead ladies and gentlemen. Rewind2846 has killed irony.

steverockson: serial_crusher: steverockson: LlamaGirl: steverockson: Which one?

All of them. But Aryan Aaryn the most.

She's horrible but I think the worst guy is the redneck who was talking about Hitler and the medical experiments that were done on the Jews.  Just jawdroppingly ignorant.

I didn't see the actual video, but I'm a little suspicious that the article specifically called out the part where he "praised Hitler's speaking abilities."  I mean, Hitler was a bad guy, but let's not pretend his career as a dictator didn't owe a lot of its success to his public speaking skills.  Dude could really rile up an angry mob or two.

My gut reaction to that kind of seemingly irrational butthurt is to assume the other butthurt associated without it is also irrational.  What'd the guy actually say?

I'm looking for the direct quote, but I read that he said that the medical experiments done on the Jews was beneficial. That's what gave me pause.I don't really have a problem praising Hitler's speaking abilities, it's the talk of the medical experiments that really made me think the guy was an idiot.

Our entire knowledge of the human body's tolerance for cold is based on Nazi medical experiments. All of our medical treatments of extreme cold are based on the data collected in those experiments. Anyone who has ever been saved from hypothermia has benefited from those experiments.

Spencer's phrasing is pretty important, and the fact that there are no quotes in any of the media suggest that, in context, his statements are just not that sensational. It looks like they are just lumping him in to give some heat to the story.

We learned from them, and it was the only controlled experiments of hypothermia where people died, but to claim "our entire knowledge" or "All" our medical treatments are based off them is simply not true.

Kali76: Alleged racism generated huge ratings and publicity for the British version of Big Brother a few years ago. It involved a pretty trashy woman basically bullying an Indian actress and using terms the audience thought were racist. Led to the actress winning the game.

Plus the woman who made the racist statements got kicked out, mocked in by the press, and died a slow painful death from cervical cancer. Karma is a biatch. Hopeful, history will repeat itself with Little Miss Aryan.

The Great EZE: We're approaching the 14th year of this craze (I like to start at the premier of the first U.S. Survivor)

You need to go father to 1992, when MTV infected society via The Real World. The only thing worthwhile from that show was Pedro Zamora and Judd Winick from the San Fran season in 1994.

Of course, the Patient Zero for this was An American Family in 1973, which made the Loud Family (apropos name, by the way) a household name.

I just realized something... Patient Zero....Pedro Zamora...both died of AIDS...I have to go warn Pia Zadora before it's too late!

I was thinking about that, but I chose to go with Survivor cause it more or less "weaponized" reality TV by turning it into a competition with 6- or 7-figure payouts. Also because MTV will never be as mainstream as CBS. Real World is/was cute. Survivor made it serious business.

I like semantic arguments as much as the next guy, but the word "based" is pretty damn broad and the history is not controversial.

The use of Nazi data in developing the medical treatment of hypothermia is the classic example of a dilemma in medical ethics. The data is not just one of many sources of knowledge of how the human body reacts to freezing temperatures, it is the only source. All the subsequent research and treatment is based on that data. If it was just one of many sources then subsequent research would not have made use of the data, given the conditions it was obtained under.

If my statement is "simply not true" then it should be pretty simple to elaborate on your statement and provide some examples of life saving medical treatment for freezing that does not rely on the body of knowledge created by  the data from those experiments.
