Are plane crashes an everyday event for her? If so I could see the lack of interest.

If a plane falls in the ocean and no one notices, does it make a sound?-

I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you ...

Just a guess here -- cheap Chinese prison labor workers?

Maybe she was watching a hologram of a troll playing a guitar while riding a raptor that's on top of a rocket shark with a laser cannon. Clearly more interesting.

it does make me wonder as to how many planes have crashed into the ocean right in front of me while I was on the beach and I never even noticed before they sank. By the looks of this picture, I'm guessing at least 50.

It's almost like shorelines with crashing waves are noisy or something and that she isn't actually looking in the direction of the plane.

Encyclopedia Brown knew that if the plane were approaching the water from that angle, it must have passed directly through the woman's field of view!  The photo was a fake!

I have had someone trying to carry on a conversation with me standing right next to me, and I could not hear them over the sound of the surf. It was louder than most dance clubs. If you're not looking directly at it, I could understand not noticing. Especially if the plane went in with engine failure.

Yeah, that'll be awesome!

Planes move kinda fast. Especially when they are crashing. You can be looking in a different direction and not even see it happen.

And photos don't do a good job of showing what the ambient noise level is.

If mom was a decent human being, that second picture should have shown the baby in midair as mom tossed it aside while diving into the water so she could swim to the crash site and rescue the pilot. The biatch.

ObeliskToucher: If the plane crashed because the engine wasn't running, it'd probably result in a pretty quiet crash...

Planes generally don't crash because the engine isn't running.  It's coming in too steeply for something like that by itself.  Had to be a stall or a miscalculation of the bottom of a loop or something like that (though it does appear the prop isn't spinning, but that might just be because of fast shutter speed).

Also, it's very loud when you are standing on the beach at the shoreline and the word is that the engine cut out, so it wasn't likely very loud.

FWIW, the banner planes were all grounded here on Sunday.  Several people heard the engine cut out, but with witness testimony, it's rarely accurate. The weather was windy, overcast and generally shiatty.

Perfect.  I'm stealing that, and not giving you credit.  Nyah nyah nyah.

I moved from "beneath major-metro airport departure flight path" to "reasonably rural suburban neighborhood," and the new reality -- that I can walk my dog down the middle of the street and hear a car coming from far enough away to (a) determine if I'll need to get out of the way and (b) have plenty of time to do so -- was, initially, unsettling.  It's nice though... mostly.

/ tacky and unfortunate that the pilots are being immortalized this way, however

The vid gives a better sense of the distance from shore than the telephoto pic does. It also shows that the majority of the people on the beach didn't notice.
And in a Darwinian sense, it's good for a person with a baby to be more focused on their immediate surroundings.

From what I've read, the Sea Rocket (or one of those other tourist boats) was right there when it happened. The reports were that there was no engine noise and it went down quick and that was it. I'm not sure how they could know there was no engine noise since those rocket boats are pretty loud.

there's also a likely chance that there were other kids playing on the beach and she was keeping an eye on them as a good mother should. I never take my eyes off my kids at the beach. ever.

Well, since it appears that about a quarter-second has elapsed since the first photo, I'm not surprised.

Yeah you can see the Sea Rocket to the left in the video, but even the sea rocket is just a hum to the people standing on the shore, it's loud when you are on it though.   However, many people stated they heard the crash, that is was a loud boom when the plane hit the water.  IDK, I think in a lot of instances like this, people embellish their witness accounts.

Very fast, distant (making it not only appear small but producing a sound delay), and quiet.  How the hell was this mother not constantly scanning the skies?  Probably because:

This.  The beach is NOT a relaxing place with toddlers in tow, and it is believable that this woman with an infant might also have other toddlers running around.

Nothing shopped about it. Check wbal.com, they posted a story on Monday that had video of the crash. Two off-duty OCPD Officers, Josh Adickes and Tom Geoghegan, were in the plane. Due to the rough conditions, they were not able to recover their bodies until the day after the crash. I have many friends with that department and they are pretty devastated right now.

The two officers were killed on impact.  The plane immediately sank after impact to 35 feet.  It took about 20 hours to recover the bodies.

You can even see all the other people on the beach who didn't notice the plane crashing.  That kid with the football didn't turn around until after the plane hit the water.  Most likely, all those people didn't know about it until someone started yelling.

The pictures (these pictures, in fact) that they showed on the local news this morning did not have flames coming from the plane. They do not need to add more drama to an already terrible event.

In conclusion, The Sun sucks.

Two guys flying a plane like that? I'll bet they were pretty cool dudes and liked by everyone they knew.

As least based on my knowledge of people like that.

The only thing they can do is at least say they died doing something they loved. I hope it was quick for them.
