Bored now.

2013-07-03 08:53:17 AM
You know, when some of the most expensive movies made in America are part of an ongoing series based on a farking theme park ride, maybe we deserve to be dead-ass broke as a nation.

2013-07-03 08:53:47 AM
Okay, this is obviously just a cash grab at this point

2013-07-03 08:56:28 AM
Obviously. Verbisnki and Depp tried to branch out onto different things and look how bad Lone Ranger bombed. It's back to the well trailed road.

It was a cash grab with the 4th one. The story was finished at the end of the 3rd movie.

I thought they already did this. It was called The Lone Ranger

the cash grab began during the first one, but the 2nd-4th were indeed cash grabs.

however, the first 2, imho, were very fun films...3rd was weird, but not bad. haven't seen the 4th

4th was forgettable, the 3rd was just an over the top spectacle and I imagine this 5th is going to be unwatchable.

Tyrone Slothrop: It was a cash grab with the 4th one. The story was finished at the end of the 3rd movie.

They could have stopped with the first, it was over then technically.

There was an article here on Fark in the last week or two about how Depp dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow to visit sick kids in a hospital. I think he just really likes playing the character.

he needs it about as badly with pirates 5 as brad pitt needed it with wwz

of course, as far as i know, depp doesn't have 10 kids to feed. he also doesn't have a wife who makes as much $$$ as jolie does.

however, depp is also quite charitable, so maybe this paycheck will go toward more hospital visits, or helping another wrongly accused weird-looking/acting youngster get out of prison

Yeah, but forecasts don't look good plus the reviews are abysmal. It's at 25% on RT right now.

Loved the 1st one but found 2 & 3 to be very, very boring.
Haven't bothered with 4, was it any good?

ohmygodwhocares.jpg

really, it looks like pretty much any other summer blockbuster starring a big name in a costume...fun, explosive, action & humor packed, etc

as i read yesterday on fark (paraphrasing some farker): if i listened to the critics i'd probably never see a movie

i will see this, most likely on dvd/netflix later unless my daughter says she wants to go to the movies...and i will see "turbo" because my 3.5 y.o. son, whose first ever movie theater experience was last week with "monsters u", has been saying we need to go to the movies to see "turbo"

Make it a prequel with 1/2 the movie Jack Sparrow is actually a very straight laced and honest to goodness captain, then show his fall into Keithism.

I thought it was pretty terrible. I hope Ian McShane got paid a ton of money for that movie, because he was the only reason I watched it, and the whole time I thought he should be in something better.

Son, you're too invested in this movie.

Eat your nobodycares.jpg cause actually nobody cares about that.

I'm just pointing out this movie will flop. Couldn't give two shiats about it. Not trying argue anything about blockbusters or some shiat, so go battle your demons elsewhere.

you, sir, seem to be the one with demons to battle
i'm simply pointing out that it really doesn't seem like a bad movie, and while it may not make $1/4 billion, i'm nearly certain it will profit, and plently of people will walk away smiling

You know what the 4th one missed ? The Black Pearl and its crew. There was too much of Jack Sparrow in it, whereas the previous movies managed to establish a pretty good cast of background roles. I want Pintel and Raggeti, I want Marty the dwarf handling a cannon bigger than he is,  I'd love to see Anna Maria return, I want Cotton, his bird and the undead monkey. All this menagery of people that they almost completely got rid of between 3 and 4. Instead, they only brought Sparrow, Barbossa and Gibbs.

The fourth one was based on a completely unrelated novel that got optioned by Disney and they tacked on the Pirates of the Caribbean stuff to make it more marketable. It's no surprise it was terrible.

The first one was good, stupid fun but I wish they'd left it at that, because the sequels have all sucked. Oh well, at least miss Can't-act McNo-tits is gone.

/How about a movie about pirates where they actually commit some farking piracy? Or is that too radical?

I loved the first one as well but thought the second and third one really needed to be 1 movie. I think Pirates would be a good 1 story per movie type series (like James Bond is).

Meh, long as it's entertaining. I love Depp's Jack Sparrow character and apparently he likes it too cause he goes to children's hospitals and entertains the kids wearing his outfit... So maybe in some ways he sees this as entertaining kids/families?

Pirates are charming scalliwags. Piracy is a hanging offence.

In related news, Jesus is reasonable, but his followers are hypocritical coonts.

The first one is damn good, after that, focus groups, and marketing departments, and children (gotta make it more kid friendly) took over and the franchise has gotten worse with each sequil. I skipped 4, and will most likely forget 5 even exsists.

2013-07-03 10:01:00 AM
Since Davy Jones was a teleporting, ghostly nightmare villain who could control the oceans and had a pet kraken to take down opposing ships, I went into "At World's End" expecting it to be about the end of the goddamn world. A huge apocalyptic epic centered around the pirates and an ultimate aquatic nemesis.

Instead, Jack minces about that stupid limbo realm talking to himself, Elizabeth inexplicably becomes a friggin' pirate warlord, Davy Jones is neutered into an errand boy and Will takes center stage to become the new Davy Jones. Feh, awful.

And I'm betting you only know those names from going to imdb, because that's how important they are.  But essentially you are correct.  What was really missing were Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly - not that they were awesome characters, but their screen time meant less focus on the other Sparrow and Barbosa.

Came here to say this.  It seems like a hell of a lot of fun.

Pirates 4 wasn't that bad, and it was nice to not have to sit through the obligatory Bloom/Knight stuff.  Of course they shoehorned in another love story which was even more eye-rolling, but i digress.  4 was the very definition of fun-bad.

Maybe he's just doing it for the fun of it, he really seems to enjoy it.

He travels with the Jack Sparrow costume, and visits terminally ill children in hospitals in costume wherever he goes.

It's actually the international markets that eat up these endless sequels with more CGI, 3D, and explosions. Hollywood bottomed out on the US DVD and Bluray market, but China f*cking loves their explosions in 3D.

It makes sense for actors to do embarrassing crap when they're just starting out and need the money, but once you have more than you'll ever need and can pick and choose your projects, wouldn't that be time to start thinking about your legacy? A few seem to get this like George Clooney, but for the most part accomplished actors do the complete opposite. I don't get it.
