Some dogs are dumb enough to eat anything. Hell, rocks kill more dogs than tennis balls.
Watch your dog if he/she is dumb.

Wait, so now our dogs are the precious snowflakes?  If the dog is dumb enough to eat a ball, it's dumb enough to eat anything.  You won't protect it from its own stupidity just by taking tennis balls away.

Having said that, this product is absolutely amazing and better than any tennis ball:

Thought this was normal pet owner knowledge - make sure the ball is big enough the dog can't swallow it.  Tennis balls are great for terriers, but you might have to find something else for larger breeds.

Well, there's an issue of picking toys the right size for your dog. I've seen a fuzzy, no quite tennis ball that was the size of a racquetball for itty bitty dogs.

That being said, tonight I saw the episode of The Simpsons where Santa's Little Helper ate Raymond Bird and I thought I'd find a gif of the chewing. I failed in that but found this.

My dog chewed off and swallowed the ears from her stuffed bunny, and violently threw them up two days later in my bed at 5am. We are much more careful now about her toys.

I know you buy the oversized tennis balls if you have, say, a Dane, but a Husky?  How big was this husky?  I had a 100 lb shepherd that couldn't swallow a whole tennis ball!

I'm guessing that we're looking at the plumbing of a dog from the side, as opposed to the more familiar (to me, at least) plumbing of an ape from the front. Maybe that's the bladder and kidneys? Are cats the same? Where's my cat? Where's my knife? Can you hold on a minute?

My guess is the bladder wouldn't show up that well since it's a hollow organ..  would be more transparent like the intestines.  Liver is solid though.  (Not too familiar with dogs' organ sizes and arrangements.)

All hail FSM!

My dad had a 200+ pound great dane...I'm betting it could swallow a tennis ball no problem.

BUT IT NEVER DID CAUSE IT WASN'T RETARDED

By contrast, my dad's current dog, a 75 pound golden doodle, is MORE than retarded enough, but not big enough.

//the same ones, again and again...he's always surprised when it happens

My golden disagrees.  He also would never eat a tennis ball. He treats them like gold, he's had a couple for over five years.

He prefers to chew things until they're almost destroyed, then hang on to the remnants for long periods.

Well, cats are a whole lot redder inside than that dog's picture led me to believe.

Oh well, off to Craigslist to sell some meat.

I have a beagle.  Unless you rub the tennis ball down with chicken broth, she ain't gonna eat it.

My pugs have to corner the ball and force their jaws open wide enough to even get a grip on it, its like watching a short, fat snake eat its prey.  The younger got wise and pulled at the fur until he got a sizable tail going to hold on to to carry it.

Yeah...  I really don't know.  But when I looked at it again I noticed there's kind of a derpy trollface thing on the right of FSM.  New meme?  (Best guess on that - bladder?)

Imagine that first guy, all those years ago, who took the first fuzzy tennis ball and threw it for the first time for his dog. Did he realize what he was starting? Did the dog get instantly excited at the mere sight of the ball or did it take a little coaxing? That's the shiat they should be teaching in history.

My dog Cookie is one of these dumb dogs. I've caught her chewing on nails and push pins before. She doesn't give a fark, whenever I catch her with something I take it but she still eats anything and everything. But I still love the goofy bastard.

My mutt has balls of all sizes, even the little ones. Never swallowed one. He loves plastic bottles too, but he swallowed a cap once when I wasn't watching him close enough. He barfed it right back up and now likes to get them off and leave em lying around for dad to step on.

He likes to play soccer with all his toys, one goes in the mouth and then he kicks or noses another toy around

My sister's 8 lb Cavidoodle ate over a pound of beach sand once. The vet bill was over 1G.
My father's Border Collie sneaks cat food whenever dad leaves the kitchen during dinner to answer the phone.

The differences in intelligence between breeds can be really stark at times.

Bladder is usually down by the hips... Not many organs along the diaphragm

A family friend many years back bred Great Danes. Forget tennis balls, their toy of choice for fetch was a car steering wheel.

You haven't lived until you've seen a dog that basically considers itself to be a puppy -- yet is as tall as you are (I was maybe 13-14) jump eight feet and catch a car steering wheel mid-air.

I could've done without the damned thing trying to dry hump my leg halfway up a staircase, though. CSB, I know. I'll show myself the door.

Meh. I agree that limiting mathematically likely risks is a reasonable thing to do. But I have seen uncountable dogs fetch tennis balls on the order of thousands of times without incident. shiat. Happens. Occasionally a human being will aspirate on a glass of water or fall down stairs they have sagely traversed time and again.

Also, sticks. farkING STICKS are easy more dangerous way more frequently than a damn tennis ball. Is someone seriously going to suggest that dogs should not play with sticks? Just stop it already. I love my dog like my child but she's an animal, not a stuffed toy.

I know...  I honestly have no idea.  It's like the only visible things on that dog are all crammed together randomly.

Changed my mind - I think the black blobs are a kidney and maybe the spleen.  I don't think the other one's big enough to be the liver.

Many years ago I had a black lab/Irish wolfhound mix, huge dog. Very sweet and loving, but very dumb. One day a 2x4 i had leaning against a wall fell over and whacked my dog on the head, he didn't even flinch. Just stood there going duhhhhhhhh, and waggling happily.

We need to outlaw 2x4s like tennis balls, cause of the doggie danger!
