To be fair, LA Noire on PS3 took one long dump of a install.

I was just surprised that ME2 and ME3 never did this

/Disc swapping is annoying, I'd rather install one disc and play off the other

Yea, that bugged me too. I had both discs installed, but still had to switch them out for some stupid reason.

Anyway this doesn't really bug me. I've expected the games to start requiring installs for a while now. Hell I install every game I get. The system runs quieter and (most) games load faster. And with all the talk of being able to play while installing I'm not too worried about it.

Having to Install software will delay you from trading your sixty dollar game for five bucks at gamestop by maybe fifteen, twenty minutes.

What a scandal...

Hang on, per the article both XBox 360 and Playstation 3 versions require a mandatory install on these games, but the headline here and in the article only mention the XBox 360.  I'm going to have to assume it's because the XBox is so sweet and awesome.

Because the PS3 requires it for a lot of games because bluray is so slow.

High fidelity games require higher data throughput than an optical drive can provide.  Time to start preparing to get over it.

Not really (on the troll part). Most PS3 games require an install already, whereas 360 is optional. All subby was saying is that 360 games may now require an install.

Actually I think the headline assumes you know Play Station requires install, thus you's stick with Xbox to escape that. That's the way I read it, anyway. Ain't nobody got time to give a real shiat about this stuff. I have a job and several hobbies. My PS3 died 6 months ago. Haven't replaced it yet.

Didn't Battlefield 3 require you to install for multiplayer? Or could you run it from the disc?

Battlefield 3 is insane on space-hogging. I think it's up 20+GB on my system, and that's without a single DLC.

I don't mind installs. I do mind installs larger than the hard drive. What's the point of having a 4 gb system when most games are at least 6 gb? How do you install that?

Next Gen can't get here soon enough.  Mandatory installs still, but smart installs that DL everything required at the start of the game and continue in the background as you play.

Lest with Sony.  Not sure if the XBone has said anything about that.

The 360 has HDD-less SKU's, so a not insignificant number of people will not be able to play this game out fo the box without preparing for the workarounds in the article.  All PS3's have HDD's, so just delete space and deal with it.

The arcade version was the dumbest version ever.

Even with the original 20GB version, game installs were iffy (only 13GB of the 20GB was available for use by the user, you buy a few pieces of DLC, install a game or two and you're done).

GTA4 installed entirely to a raid0 of SSDs still loaded like ass, I cannot understand why people would voluntarily purchase gaming platforms that load entirely off a freakin optical drive every time.  Good god I'd slit my wrists with the second disc out of boredom.

And then you could spend $50 and get a 320GB third-party hard drive.  Sure, you lost backwards compatibility with original XBOX, but that wasn't much of a loss.

That might work for one or two games.

But external USB devices are capped at 32 gigs.

IE, if you plug in a 200 gig external USB drive, the 360 will only use 32 gigs of it.

Yeah, I know that.  But can you say, instal 5% of that 20GB next gen game and start playing while the other 95% installs in the background.

Sonys claiming they got a system that does that, and that also allows you to download the SP and MP portions separately as different chunks.  whether it works as advertised, who knows.

Both systems have said they will do background downloads, installs while in low power states, and force all games to be installed (due to BD drive read speed limitations)

Also want to know if Sony will find away around the 4GB file size limit on external plug and play HDDs.  Anyone know what the deal is with that?

Their Os is based on BSD and the internal file system doesn't have the limit, but it appears the external only supports fat32 read?  NTFS supports larger, but maybe MS won't license it or it costs more?  But isn't Fat32 also MS, so just a cost thing?

Is there any BSD format that windows would read and allow plug and play friendliness with both windows, apple, and a BSD OS?

That's not the consumer's fault nor an excuse.

There is or was a stipulation that to get your game signed by Microsoft it had to run on the base model of the machine.  Which would be the Arcade and for quite a while (it still may not) that package didn't come with a HDD.

So whilst some studio's threw it in as an optional feature, it wasn't necessary to geting the game on the machine so a lot didn't bother with the added expense.

I just bought a 750gb 2.5" laptop drive and replaced my PS3 HDD with it so this is not a problem for me.  Now the Xbox360, on the other hand, this is utter crap.  Its HDD is almost full and the only way to get more space (besides deleting stuff that I don't want to deleter) is to buy an expensive Xbox360 upgrade drive?  No way.

It's like these guys flip flop on things from one generation to another.

If you think it's bad now, you should look at the XBOX/PS2 generation and see what memory cards were priced at.

Gouging people for storage just seems to be something that companies these days do, look at apple pricing, where the SKUs are mostly based on the amount of internal storage and each doubling of storage space is gained for a fixed price).

// like seriously dude, we buy hardware too, we know how much that memory and those drives really sell for wholesale.

Sonys actually been good about this with the PS3.  User replaceable standard HDD, non-locked down USB for preperials, region free system for games and blurays, and standard BT for everything but their 1st party controller.

Hopefully they keep it up with the PS4.

You know. . . I honestly did not make that connection (and I'm old enough to have owned an original Nintendo, but too young for Atari).

But yeah, if you want higher data communication, you're not gonna be able to do it with opti drives.

FAT32 file systems can only keep track of file sizes up to 232. Also why 32-bit OSes can only address 4GB of RAM.

You know what?  So farking what.

I just got my PS3 last year and I love it.  If you're referring to size... well it wasn't that big, and fits rather well onto my 500gb hard drive (what was it, 1.3 gigs or so?).  If you're referring to install time... well I've never had any game take more than a few minutes to install, 5 at the most.

Except for Bioshock.  That one took 30 minutes.  But I read online that was a problem with the game.  In terms of install times, it's been extremely minimal for every other game I've ever played, including LA Noire.
