I watch MSNBC all the time. On the Internet. I don't have cable. So yeah, I guess I'm not counted as a "viewer."

I listen to Maddow every night, and sometimes Chris Hayes over Sirius XM. They are great shows that deserve to be higher rated but they don't fear monger like other cable news shows.

Agreed, I liked UP with Chris Hayes, but find the style he's in now much more suited to him. Would not be disappointed if they got an Ezra Klein show in the mix too, maybe in place of Sharpton...

I stopped watching after Maddow let herself go.

Is it too much to ask for unbiased and un-filtered/spun news? I swing between being left and right wing and prefer MSNBC over Fox but I really can't stand either of them.

They don't fear monger?
Whatever.
They ALL do, including fox.

1.7 million Fox News viewers compared to 400k CNN viewers.

What is Fox News channel doing that is making them incredibly successful?

They give the public what they want.

The American people want to watch "OW MY BALLS" instead of Rachel Maddow.

Considering some of the shows on Fox Ow my Balls is most def better than most.

Another reason I like Maddow: she isn't covering the Zimmerman trial. Thank.God.

I want to be able to watch Fox to balance my MSNBC tendencies, but just typically find them so difficult to watch/listen to. I feel an agitation from them that does not sit well with me. Same reason I can't watch Bashir or Sharpton on MSNBC.

I like the theory from one of the last "MSNBC's Ratings Sux" threads where someone pointed out that liberals and progressives don't need to watch some sort of fantasy-land broadcasts to keep up the illusion.

FTA's Comments:

smokeysmokeThey may have "small numbers" but O got voted in again; that's the thing that's scary. So how does our side get through to the low-infomation voters? We seem to be really bad at that. The Republicans in the Gang of 8 think they know just how to do it. That's the other problem. We have too many idiots in Washington, supposedly, on our side.

/the messaging, not the message is the problem

The good ones fear monger with verifiable statistics and semi-honest numbers. Of course they're going to frequently source from media that initially confirmed a suspicion, but I have seen Maddow and Hayes shoot down their own beliefs in light of new evidence.

The difference I've found is while Fox will show graphs and charts, they are usually nebulous, un-cited, or otherwise suspect. The good MSNBC hosts will provide ones with context and well interpreted analysis. They all have a slant, but I find the latter can be used as a more substantial jumping off point to get to information than the former which leads with how to feel and never digs deeper so much as it escalates that initial feeling.

Conservatives need Fox News like a crackhead needs another rock. That daily reaffirmation that the niBONG in the White House is the greatest travesty to have ever gripped mankind is lifeblood to them. Fox News's audience is all trailer dwelling couch potatoes and southern white retirees who tend to be low activity folks anyway.

Liberals, well, it's summer, and it's not an election year and Obama is floundering so they're going to go do something with their lives.

I watch a bootleg stream on the net. We only have one TV in the house and I let my wife and kid watch their shows while I watch on the net in the mancave. It's all good.

Maddow is gawd awful. Be a liberal, great but she's a really stunningly bad example of liberal "thinking". Heck, her and Matthews (is he even still employed now?)  might as well be Republican plants because they're both more annoying and stupid than helpful to their cause. Anyone who thinks "their" echo chamber broadcasters are better than the other guy's echo chamber types is delusional or stupid.

Rather unshockingly the best thought from both sides are from writers and not the people put on TV to throw red meat to the true believers.

"Anderson Cooper's 10 p.m. block surged in the eleventh hour by devoting the show to coverage of the George Zimmerman trial ..."

The whole Zimmerman affair should not be a national story. They aren't (weren't) national figures and the trial has no influence on anything happening to Americans. It certainly doesn't deserve Cooper devoting a whole hour to this trial.

The Zimmerman case got moved into national prominence because it is being framed as the first judicial confrontation with Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law. The "poor Travyon" stuff came later.

If you're a politician who has some serious news to drop, I'd do it tomorrow.  Wall-to-Wall Zimmerman trial, a four-day weekend for a lot of people, it begs for bad news to be dropped.

The sooner the market for biased news dries up, the better our democracy will be. I'm not going to hold my breath on this because since the advent of the printing press, people have gravitated toward publications that reinforce their comfortable little worldviews.

If you have any appreciable intellect, you'll immediately detect the stench of bullshiat that MSNBC and FOX are broadcasting and stay far away from both.

Its because the most enlightened people don't have TVs and they download podcasts. These numbers aren't real, even if their entire revenue stream is based on them.

In television ratings online presence isnt a factor

Television ratings are about the eyeballs on the television.

All the southern white retirees where I live spend a great deal of their time outside working on the flowers, lawns and houses and then they spend the weekends with their kids and grandkids.

Fox appeals to old angry white males who grew up with television as their major news source.  It's the medium their viewers are most comfortable with.  Of course, there ain't no Walter Cronkites anymore.  Now the news focuses on echoing back and stoking the viewers fears and anger.  Why wouldn't it be popular with that demographic?

But then again, winning the television ratings game is increasingly like having the most popular exhibit at The World's Fair.  Does anyone under the age of 30 even watch television news on a regular basis?

DoomPaul: Is it too much to ask for unbiased and un-filtered/spun news? I swing between being left and right wing and prefer MSNBC over Fox but I really can't stand either of them.

Facts and truth won't be found that way.  You're not going to find the truth by switching between two sets of lies and agenda with rotating talking points.  Truth doesn't exist on a spectrum between right and left, nor can it be found by mixing them anymore than you'll get potable water by mixing raw sewage and nuclear waste.

The closest to "truthful" sources I find are direct AP feeds and NPR, but that's only partially successful.  Anything with a 24 hour network is shilling for ratings, and catering to an audience with like-minded views to make money, not provide news.
