From the half of the article I actually read it seems it's the lying part and not the used to be a SEAL part that has the city upset

CSB: in a recent meeting, a guy next to me complained about the temperature being too low.  I told him "when I was a Navy SEAL, they turned the AC all the way down to 60.  It was brutal."  He actually asked if I had really been a Navy Seal and I kept him going for about five minutes.

Kerkorian said he was discharged from the Navy "under honorable conditions" after his "refusal to discuss matters involving nonmilitary family members" that he felt weren't related to his service. Military records provide little explanation of his discharge.

Sounds like he was trying to get a security clearance, and a family member farked it up.  I could be wrong, but I think SEALs do actually have to get cleared.

That said, just because you were almost one, doesn't mean you were one.  Idjit.

For those who weren't around for the thread that Subby is obviously alluding to in the headline, here's the "Marine Core soldier" thread from a few years ago, in which one of the most annoying right-wing idiot blowhards of the time got called out (first by me, actually!) as a fake Marine.  And it wasn't even the worst embarassment he had around here.  There was the previous time when he tried to blame something else he had said that was incredibly stupid on his wife--he tried to claim that she had used his password and was posting in his name.

Good times.

"Marine Core" originated with The Convincing Savant, who blamed the error on his wife.

Not exactly.  "Marine Core" did originate with him (in the thread I linked above), but he didn't blame it on his wife that time.  The "I didn't really say that stupid shiat, my wife used my password and posted it in my name" incident was in this earlier thread about an unrelated topic.  Yep, this person was truly "special"--I can't say enough about the guy!

"...reports indicating he was in the Navy from August 1986 to February 1987..."

There are people who actually believed he was in the Navy for six months, and somehow was a SEAL.
Basic training itself is almost two and a half months.

Oh, for sure.  The beauty of this particular incident, though, and what made it so memorable, was that he had just gotten through claiming to have been a retired Marine in another thread, and then made a mistake that no real Marine would actually make.  And, of course, he then doubled down and claimed that he had written it intentionally, that he really was a Marine "soldier," and that he had written "Core" simply as a "joke" that all of the rest of us were far too dim to understand.

I interviewed a guy for a job, once.  Looked over his resume beforehand, and picked him to speak with personally, in my office.  He'd earned the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant before leaving the USMC.  So I ask him, "You're 'retired' Marine?"  To which he replied, "Sir, there is no such thing. After you become a Marine, you can only become a former one, whether dead or alive."

/his credentials checked out, so I hired him the next week

Huh. My ol' man (thirty years, three wars, two "crises") used to say: "ex Marines are dead. I'm a former Marine."

May be a generational thing. An even older fellow of my acquaintance was a "China Marine" before the war and he always said "no such thing as a former Marine" period. He also had the nicest tiger tattoo on his chest I've ever seen - even well into his 80s.

Guess it proves the old saw that the Marines are the closest thing we have to a monastic order in the modern era.

Just didn't think it would be submitted with a misleading/false headline
