About once a year, I just need some grease, man.

I feel the same way.

I eat that sort of thing once a year and spend the rest of the year digesting it, kind of like a fast food  python.

But look, it's fish. Fish is healthy, right? And there's some vegetables over on the side too!

The Big Catch meal also includes 19 grams of saturated fat, 1,320 calories and nearly 3,700 milligrams of sodium, according to the CSPI.

But it looks so good in the ads. My doctor would drive over here and kick me in the jewels over the sodium content alone.

maybe 3-4 times a year i find myself with a car in the suburbs (there are no LJS's in chicago proper, i think due to the trans-fat ban?) and indulge.  if i'm being honest, one of those 3-4 times per year i grab a zipcar for no other purpose than to drive to and from an LJS in the suburbs so i can go home and eat my heart attack alone in shame.

I'm by no means a food snob. I often jones for fast food, and basically have pretty low standards for what I find palatable. That said, I had some LJS last year for the first time in probably 30 years. Had their fried fish and hush puppies meal.

Flavorless. Absolutely f*cking flavorless. It was like someone figured out a way to deep-fry the color white and sell it.

I added malt vinegar to the fish, and it had no discernible effect. I see the absurd sodium numbers in TFA, and I wonder... where? How can something with so much salt taste like a plate full of wet flour?

Yup.  About once a year is all I can handle.  I end up paying for it over the next couple of days.  Screws with my stomach and gallbladder something awful.

I am the same way but usually go to Captain D's instead.  Seems to be better quality, at least the ones in my town.

It's almost in Wisconsin, but next time, drive up to Captain Porky's on 41 & Wadsworth Road and order the fried Cod.

Kentucky Fried Chicken is my guilty pleasure. And I've been known to sneak a Taco Bell bean burrito from time to time, because something about their refried beans just hits the spot.

I'd rather get some panko bread crumbs and bake some fish.  Nice buttery flavor, no need for the bypass surgery.

i'll check it out next time i'm driving north. i drive by at least a dozen amazing fish and chips places in chicago to get to LJS, it's just one of those cravings from my white trash childhood that i have to quench every now and then.

There is nothing inherently healthy or unhealthy about a meal (I mean discounting things like mercury laced fish and the like).

There are just healthy and unhealthy diets.

1,320 calories

I need 2200 calories per day to maintain my current weight, 1320 in a meal still leaves me with 880 calories for another meal, this thing isn't even worth the bandwidth used to download the article.

Much huff about nothing.

Yep.

Almost exactly once a year I go "Damn, I want some grease!" and drive to Long John Silver's.

Seriously, exactly once a year.

Their chicken is actually pretty good, though.

I try not to eat fast fish.  This unhealthy rating would seem pretty accurate to me as everything seems to be fried except the cole slaw.  Ive eaten LJS a couple of times and everything tasted like fried fish.  Maybe they fry stuff in separate fryers now.

2013-07-02 05:04:41 PM
give me a pork butt any day. 99 cents a pound and you have all that nice fat too. marinade and throw it in the crock pot. i'm not a sweet bbq coca cola. root beer, dr pepper type bbq person. give me a white wine and herbs type marinade cooked through.

2013-07-02 05:04:49 PM
I understand that people have to rate the least healthy thing ever so they can feel superior, but seriously, who goes to LJS for healthy food? I go in there solely for the reason that when I come out of there after eating a meal that I will be coated with grease, inside and out.

2013-07-02 05:05:31 PM
I see I am not alone in that weird, basically annual craving of "I've got to have some Long John's, right now".

2013-07-02 05:10:49 PM
Is it because every LJS is filled with flies buzzing around?

I bet it is because of the flies.

Fairly certain that is how the franchise remains sustainable.

They do have grilled fish and green beans and rice too. Every place has healthy options.

Then go to Cap'n D's. At least their chicken doesn't taste as fried in the same vat with the fish.

Late to the thread, but what Phaseolous said on Captain Porky's. they also roast a goat on Sundays. Ribs are far better than average as well.

I love the LJS chicken. I wish they still had the "peg legs".

It has been about 2 years since I have had it, but I love LJS's chicken planks, covered in malt vinegar. Their fish is gross though.

I defy you to eat Long John Silvers and not feel like absolute shiat afterwards.   It simply can't be done.

My favorite part of Long john Silvers are the little crumbly bits at the bottom of the basket. And yeah i wish more places had malt vinegar. I love putting that stuff on french fries...

CRACKER BARREL PORN THREAD!!

DAMMIT, now I'm hungry.. Thanks a farking lot.

2013-07-02 06:39:45 PM
Just about the only thing I can never get enough of at LJS is the batter crumbs.  Fresh and hot, it's like goddamn salty, umami candy.  After it gets cold, though, it's greasy nastiness... the magic is gone.

The fries there suck, for all the salt they use the fries never have enough, and the oil they use seems to suck out the flavor.

The batter on the fish 'fillets' is the only part that has flavor, and if you ever get a three piece meal and peel off the batter you get greeted with horrid truth:  Every fillet has the exact same shape and the flesh pattern is painted on.  It's so reconstituted it could easily be cardboard soaked in seawater.

The chicken planks are awful, often overcooked and rubbery.

I hate hush puppies already, LJS's version is no exception.

Coleslaw is not a soup.  The cream dressing is not supposed to sit on the cabbage so long it turns to mush... save money and half the dressing content, and maybe your coleslaw will be worth a damn. I know it's all packaged separately... I've seen it.

Clam strips - see the complaint about chicken.

Shrimp is never cleaned properly and the breading is overcooked.  LJS has managed to take tasty shrimp and make it taste lackluster.
