Oh good, all those subtly racist classmates I had back in the 80's that used to root for the Celtics because they had the only good white guy in the league, can go back to cheering for their team!

Bring back shaq in full "steel" outfit to save this team.

/yes I watched "Steel" yesterday on showtime. I didn't mind it honestly. It was better than meteor man, but that's a low hurdle to step over. Also I liked the shockwave sledgehammer shaq used.

I'd be curious to know how he feels about practice. Or if he talks about it. What about a real game?

Those guys don't look like NBA players.  That looks like a public relations spot from the Make-a-Wish foundation.

the nba should make a rule where the 2nd worst team in the nba automatically gets the #1 pick.  it would be interesting to see teams lose games on purpose while trying to make sure that they don't lose too many.

A lottery playoff tournament would be great, where the worst 8 teams from each division play for the number one pick.  That puts 32 teams (I think I'm right?) into the postseason and increases fan interest and ticket sales - compared to, say, showing the draft lottery at halftime during the playoffs and trotting out some guy who can't walk to represent your team.

It's shiatty and I'd hate to have my team associated in that way - especially where the Celtics have a rich history that was the opposite of white racism (go back to Russel's Celtics, and even have a look at the On the Shoulders of Giants documentary)

I don't know. Iverson's a clubhouse cancer who hasn't played in the NBA in two years. I can't think of a worse influence on a young team that's going nowhere anytime soon.

I grew up in the 80's as well, and there were a lot of "I like the Celtics because they're mostly white guys" types around me:  Bird, McHale, Ainge, several benchwarmers, etc.  TFA reminded me of that sentiment.

Ask black people who their favorite golfer is.  Or favorite women's tennis player.  Or President.  Ask New Zealanders who their favorite NBA player is.  Mormons who their favorite football player is.  Irish or Catholics who their favorite President is.  Conservative white guys who their favorite standup comic is.

When one race/creed/whatever dominates a field, the dominated tend to root for "their" guy.  Doesn't make it right, but it's as natural as greed, envy, or wrath.

It's about how Carr deliberately tanked the Celtics.  He talked about pulling players who were hot to tank games.  But he let Rick Fox play thru a really painful foot injury for no apparent farking reason.  If I was Rick Fox I'd kick that guy in the nuts repeatedly.

Hm.  I have no idea who Nate Driggers and Brett Szabo are, but I'll bet they are two guys who are immensely proud that they once played in the NBA.  I'll bet they're admired by their family and friends and neighbors for having worked and worked and worked and just briefly tasted that little bit of glory that very few of us ever come close to.  That article must be really, really deflating for them.

Hmm.....field's a lot more crowded than I thought.  I was going to go with Dennis Miller, but I forgot about GIT ER DONE Man.

Ron White is probably too defensive of gay people for the real hardcore righties.  Which is sad.

Which is ironic, because anyone who actually believes in white supremacy should be forced to tour South Boston.

I'm wondering if I should trace the exact point where an otherwise benign thread about NBA basketball became an uncomfortable discussion on race relations.

Actually, seems like most NBA threads around here eventually become "uncomfortable discussions regarding race relations" at some point.

He can refuse to play, as he so often has whenever a coach wants him to come in off the bench instead of starting, and he can show up late or refuse to practice at all ("Practice!.....we're talking about Practice!").

And he can so get banned from any and all casinos in the area.
