Celebrating what you don't have is so Orwellian, this event will be more of a funeral than a party.

DoBeDoBeDo: IrateShadow: Can we stop with the liquid bans already?  It's a farking stupid security measure that's based on the plot from Die Hard 3.

You do realize there are entire departments within the government out to stop the guys from "Live Free or Die Hard".........yeah really.

True American patriots demonstrate their loyalty to the Homeland by purchasing magnetic ribbons and $5 bottles of water.

I'm always surprised that people aren't seeing the parallels between those two situations. I guess they don't get smarter with time.

The vast majority of us are doing just fine, thanks.  Unlike the snivelling weenies in this thread, feeling all defeated and vexed on our behalves.

You could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Does that make it a good enough reason to stay home, cowering under your bed? Put on your big boy pants and man up, Nancy.

I have not heard one person talk about not celebrating the 4th.  The Hatch Shell and the surrounding area can be pretty crazy though so if there was more security I wouldnt be offended.

Wellon Dowd: meat0918: Burn a flag.

What symbolizes American freedom more than the ability to destroy one of the most visible symbols of our country without governmental repercussions?

The best reason to burn a flag is that it is prohibited, and the best reason to not burn one is that it is allowed.

It is technically legal, but it is culturally taboo.

Personally, I'm waiting for even more stories about people flying their flags upside down this 4th, "Because Fartbama's a neo-Marxist Muslim Nazi molester from Mars.".

Not sure where the hostility comes from, but did you actually read TFA:"Others call new rules banning everything from backpacks to wheeled coolers Draconian... Visitors will also be banned from carrying in cans, glass containers, pre-mixed beverages, liquids greater than 2 liters, or any sharp objects. They will not be allowed to grill, and all blankets, tents, and other items must be carried in see-through bags."Bear in mind that this is all to celebrate an event where the early Americans basically taunted the British Empire (by signing the Declaration of Independence), starting a war they knew would probably leave most of them dead in the name of independence....yet we're honoring an event where our predecessors displayed reckless disregard for their personal safety in the name of freedom by forcing people to pack their picnic blankets in ziplocks and banning soda & mixed drinks. What happened to the big brass balls? Can you really not see the irony?

Doesn't it warm your heart thought that all these cringing assholes can declare defeat on our behalves? I know I'm going to be having a great time and watching the fireworks from the same spot as every year, no problems.  I guess that doesn't fit their apocolyptic paranoid narrative, though.

I've been thinking of driving up to Boston for the 4th.  But some of the comments make me think that maybe I shouldn't.  Is it really that bad?  I don't mind crowds and stuff, I just like the Boston Pops and fireworks.  Is it really that bad, or should I try it?

Yeah, I get the Globe every morning. And I know the area where the restrictions are in force and it's tiny and you couldn't pay me enough to go there.

The rest of you assholes just don't know what you're talking about. That's where the hostility comes from.

Going to the Esplanade is a tourist thing to do; too many people for too long and the weather may or may not suck.  Pro tip:  go drink all day at a bar on Charles (your money will go pretty far at the BHP), then walk down with a blanket and go behind the hatch shell - where the new Ebersol ballfields are.  You can hear the music fine and get an awesome view of the fireworks.  Then when done cross back over and go drink near Causeway (again, for your best money stretch hit up Sully's for a few).

This crap is the reason I stopped going down to DC for fireworks. The mall is fenced in, you get searched, everything is banned. It's a joke now, all they need is someone on a loudspeaker saying "You will have fun under pain of imprisonment."

This is real TNT (the stuff from the road-runner cartoons):

[upload.wikimedia.org image 320x240]

Note that it's not a liquid.  In fact, it can be melted and formed into just about any solid shape you desire: a bar of soap, a backpack handle, wheels for a cart, etc., etc., etc.

The liquid thing is stupid -- very few explosives are liquids.  The vast majority of the ones in common use look basically like plastic.

/ chemical engineer

People get confused by the term "explosive," as it's been misapplied almost to the point that it's synonymous with "hazardous." (Or "awesome," but that's something else entirely.)

In technical terms, an explosive is any material that can be made to combust throughout its entire volume faster than the expansion can scatter it, unlike regular flammable substances that depend on the surrounding atmosphere to combust, and therefore can only burn on their surface. This is also different from the adjective form, which can be applied to anything capable of generating a shockwave by sudden expansion... for example, a poorly made boiler is explosive, but neither it nor the steam that can make it explode is AN explosive.

Liquid explosives are actually quite simple to make, but their chaotic structure means all but the most carefully engineered clathrate-based liquid explosives are too unstable to be very useful to terrorists, except as a bluff. They can't even be made on the site of the attack by combining a few precursors; attempting to do so.will result in the "explosive" detonating as quickly as it's generated, producing a firebomb but not a true explosion.

/still, even a firebomb can kill everyone aboard a plane in flight
//not to mention the eventual possibility that, between miniaturization and industrialization, terrorists might actually one day start mass production of disposable micro-labs capable of automatically and reliably producing enough nitroglycerin to blow up a plane while being small enough to conceal
///if they could do that, you'd think they could just mass produce C4, but then terrorists thrive on being unpredictable

When people say "the terrorists have won", they're referring to the fact that, with a tiny attack, our government will spend millions upon millions of dollars and will strip away our rights in the name of security theater. It's not saying "zomg terrorists" as you apparently think.

I went on the 3rd last year and Storrow was closed (I was able to wander over to Copley and get grilled cheese from a food truck. which was delicious); I don't think Memorial was though.

I'm no fan of security theater, as you rightly call it.  But are you saying that increased security at this year's fourth is somehow unreasonable?  And are you really saying that having to bring liquids in clear bottles in order to go to the Esplanade is somehow an assault on some fundamental freedom?
