That contest was the beginning of the spiral that ultimately killed the MTV.

theflatline: Rapmaster2000: thecpt: At least it wasn't that one girl who won that contest... Jesse I think

An long-lost acquaintance told me a story about going with Jesse to the Clermont Lounge and Jesse at one-point disappearing only to be found later passed out with a needle and spoon in the back of a truck in the parking lot.  This was like 15 years ago when the Clermont wasn't a place where suburbanites would go to be "bad".  It was just bad.

Wasnt Jesse the flaming gay dude that I am going with idea Sascha Coens Bruno character was based on.

Jesse was this smirking asshole. Talked like a surfer despite never being shown anywhere near a beach (outside of Spring Break specials).

McDoogle is right. She has a morning show on FM radio in L.A. and fills in on AM talk as well, where she likes to spread the libertarian word.

Kennedy is also the same person who asked Martin Landau why he was at the Mission Impossible screening.  He suggested that maybe she do a little research if she's going to do red carpet interviews, and she came off it acting like he was the jerk.

Why have I not been informed of this woman before?

Canadian TV generally does not play well to American audiences, often for good reason. However, having had access to both MTV and Much Music from the mid 80s to the late 90s, I would suggest Much Music was often better.

Canadian TV, with some exceptions, is lowest-common-denominator pablum paid for by our taxes. Canadians are a bland, boring, conservative bunch overall.

Canada's a big country; you should get out of whatever bland, boring, conservative corner of it you happen to live in. Although you're certainly right that most of our TV sucks.

Dingleberry Dickwad: Eh, she was cute in a way back then, but dear god her personality on whatever she was hosting back then was annoying as fark. If she had that personality in real life I can see why she was a virgin for so long.  Frankly she looks better now than she ever did back then.

I'm not sure that I can stress that enough, but I'm gonna try... Somewhere near the end of the 90's, I would see her occasionally(I'm guessing on MTv, although I can't remember), and she had mellowed some, and was finally tolerable. She's boinkable though, especially if that book cover pic is recent.

I couldn't have done her either, if that was her real personality.

Dingleberry Dickwad: The DBS: Odd, her book title mentions "golden age of MTV", but she was on in the 90's.

Eh, the 90s were a bit of a golden age, at least before they popularized reality TV. The 90's were when MTV was most relevant to pop culture, started to become more than simple "Music Television". They were helping a younger generation learn about politics with their participation in Rock the Vote, they were bringing STD and AIDS awareness to a younger generation that likely blew off learning the same stuff in school. They started informing a younger generation about world events when those kids likely couldn't be bothered to watch regular news. There's a shiat load of stuff MTV started in the 90s that was pretty revolutionary for the time, a simple music video channel actually doing something kinda important. Of course those same things that were revolutionary at the time. Of course all that led to the channel becoming a total shiat sammich, but while the channel was popular in the 80s, it was most relevant in the 90s.

MTv is WHY we have Reality TV. The Real World was the beginning of the end. Although there was definitely some good times in the 90's, it's when MusicTelevision(Otherwise known as MTv), started to turn away from music itself and become a channel of TV shows. I still watched through about '95 or so, but stopped entirely until '99 or so when I turned it on one day and realized that they now had a 1 1/2 hour block in the middle of the night as their entire 'music videos' content. Really, this started in the late 80's with Remote Control, whatever it was Julie Brown hosted, and a few other shows, but it took off in the 90's and killed the channel completely.

Montreal. It is not only bland and boring, but also ludicrously over-rated, expensive, noisy, dirty, corrupt, small, and there's no jobs. Well, no REAL jobs. I have no idea what people do here all day long, it just looks like realtors selling insurance to each other while getting tattoos and haircuts and eating out every day.

Must have been institutional ignorance -- Tabitha Soren asked Bill Clinton, "Who's the Loneliest Monk?" after asking him to name his favorite jazz musician.
(He actually said Thelonious Monk. That she -- as a music reporter -- didn't know the name was pretty sad. )

Not to be all "Get off my lawn",  but do they even make music videos anymore?  I couldn't name the last song I saw a music video for.  Why make music videos if there's no place to play them.

2013-07-02 01:11:30 PM
As I said in another MTV thread, while the network became an utter joke by the late 90s and is even worse now, I don't think any one of us would be watching it as much as we once did if it actually played music videos with any consistency. There's too many different methods to expose ourselves to, and consume music nowadays.

ristst: Meh.  She was part of the tidal wave of douchebag hosts that came AFTER the Golden Age of MTV.  I always found her *unbelievably* annoying and grating.

But a lot of folks say it was in important era for various reasons.  So if you compare it to the comics industry, the 90s could be called the Silver Age of MTV.

She was also their "entertainment reporter" who had no idea why Martin Landau would be attending the premiere of the then-new Mission: Impossible movie.  Him tearing her a new asshole for failing to do any research is amazing.

It's a nice place for an engineer to spend several hours on one of his days off when they send him to T-R for a couple weeks. I had a great time poking around Mile End a week ago, buying things I didn't know I needed at Librarie Drawn & Quarterly, eating delicious goat curry and taking bad mobile phone photos of interesting graffiti art.

Speaking of haircuts I saw a few people in Quebec with this weird combination-mohawk-and-mullet thing I'd never seen anywhere else. It's really going to look ridiculous in a few years, I'll bet.

With 1/10th the population of the U.S. either you target specific markets and have low production values or you try the "be all things to all people" approach and end up with something bland, but doesn't look like it was shot on a Sanyo video camera and edited on an Atari ST. Both approaches usually leave you with a sucky  final product with some rare exceptions like TPB and KITH.
