You know we've advanced as a nation when some of the best investigative reporting is done by Gawker.

It says something about our nation that having an affair makes you a disgraced former CIA director, and directing many of the nasty activities of the CIA does not.

A private donor is going to pay for a retired CIA director/major general/pussy hound to give a few lectures at a college?

The horror!

They seriously call their school CUNY?  Do they pronounce it cunny?

At first i thought this story was going to be about the somewhat shady practice of retaining retired Generals as consultants for huge hourly fees.  Hiring him to teach a seminar he is an expert on at a school?  Non-issue.  Whatever his personal problems are, Petraeus is one of the best strategic thinkers the US has, and it would be stupid for schools not to try and recruit him.

It's almost as if he some sort of other income available to him, perhaps some sort of pension or retirement from a previous long standing occupation.  Although, I can't say for sure.

CUNY's a public university; they're apparently "in the process of fundraising" to try and offset the cost.

On the other hand, being caught when you're the damn director of the CIA is embarrassing to the agency.  Poor tradecraft.

Yeah, when your top spymaster's wife finds out about his girlfriend, it's time to start questioning whether you've got the right guy.

To be fair, that's with no benefits, so it's only like $1500/hr or so for the rest of us.

Doesn't Al Gore (the disgraced former VP caught trying to get happy endings from his masseuse that ended his long-term marriage) have a similar arrangement?

You see that folks? THAT's how you rewrite history. Just subtly repeat lies until they go into the collective wisdom as facts.

Sheeeeeit, I'll be a disgraced former CIA director for half that!

2013-07-02 10:05:59 PM
That's actually somewhat below what I would expect.  On the public speaking circuit he could be pulling somewhere between $100-200k per speech; Bill Clinton averages $240,000 per speech but Petraeus is unlikely to command quite that level of income on the speech circuit as a popular ex-President.

Exactly what lie?  I couched Al Gore's tenure in the same terms that the article couched General Petraeus service.  I can't imagine why you would see see Gore's salary as a teacher being different than Petraeus' salary.

/Personally I don't think a single personal indiscretion and mistake makes anyone "disgraced."  For Democratic politicians, Petraeus and Gore both have long histories in public service with very little personal errors that rise to "disgrace."  Clinton and Edwards have many more issues that make it a rule rather than exception and I rarely hear the word disgraced used for Clinton.  Edwards cheated on his terminally ill wife so that kind of raises the bar and it's fair to use "disgraced" for him.

Well said and point taken. Petraeus deserves better.
