If you've ever been to Lauderhill you would know that:
A) This is not a suprise
B) There is no Mall in Lauderhill. It's a stripmall with kids hanging out in the parking lot.
C) If I wanted to go to a mall to start a fight, Sawgrass Mills would be the place I'd go. Bunch of tourists. Nobody speaks English. Everyone rams you with their strollers/carts. It's enough to give a person with SAD a panic attack.

It's the least interesting place in that whole area. I've visited the Cities maybe five times now, and there's just so much more fun stuff to do than go to a gargantuan mall.

If you look forward to going to Mall of America, it's a scientific fact that you're a bad person.

Overall that coworker was by far the most psychotic guy I ever met.  How him or any of his friends didn't end up in jail just astounds me, I've met friendlier people in prisons.  All his stories were messed up.

We did hang out at first, but I quit doing that once I saw the crazy.  He later got violent with me at work.

stpauler: topcon: I've never been to Minnesota, but I've known about MoA for a long time due to the stories of its size and whatnot.  It's always been strange to me a mall like that exists in Minnesota of all places.  And according to wikipedia, not that big of a city either.  I know it's a huge tourist draw, but you'd still think a place like that would exist in a larger area somewhere.

Minnesota had the very first shopping mall in the world: Southdale. (True story: The French architect who designed it was so disgusted by his creation that he left the US never to return.) That said, Minnesota has about 4 months of nice outdoor weather before it turns to shiat for the other 8 months. Strip mall shopping isn't that great, so mall shopping is preferred.

Also, the metro area is about 3.8 million people, which is the 15th largest metro area in the US. Couple that with MSP which is the 17th busiest airport in the US and 41st busiest in the world.

Ah, okay, that explains it.  Just seemed strange to me at first glance.

In addition to the new MOA stuff, they're building a giant outlet mall in Eagan, about 2 or 3 miles south of the mall. That stretch of 77 is gonna be worn damn thin for the commuters come next year.

JackalRabbit: tbhouston: according to fark everyone is either on unemployment or going broke thanks to 0bama care

how can they afford to build a larger mall and who are they building it for?? i dont get it

I love that movie.  Worked at the Borders that was located outside of that mall.

/Even been to Tom Savini's haunted house for Halloween.

Catlenfell: This is where they should be building the new Vikings stadium. Instead We get multiple taxpayer funded projects.

Unlike the Vikings, the MOA brings in Billions of dollars in tax revenue, and is successful every year.

The first indoor mall was in the Twin cities.

Well I hope he kicked your ass good since you watched him lay out an old man and apparently did nothing about it.

You misread the story.  I wasn't there during the old man punching.  I met him a couple or so years later, he told me the story while we were hanging out at a mall.  I never hung out with him after that.

Saw the place about 10 years ago on a business trip, had dinner but didn't buy a thing. My wife took the kids there this year and was impressed. There's a water park nearby. I guess I get that, but for me Shopping Is Not A Vacation Destination.

MoA?  Good place to go when it's February, and I'm feeling desperate to experience an open space with light and people in it.

There are at least a dozen places within 10 minutes of there that I would prefer to go if I were doing any serious shopping, however.

I'm amazed that malls are expanding in this day and age...all the malls near me are half-empty (well maybe not that much, but you get the idea) , including an outdoor mall in my town that opened right before the market crash, and was never completely finished.

Oh well..I guess they can make the mall look like this:

Years ago the MOA people wanted to build a mall about the same size near where I lived. That caused a shiatstorm and it would have made the driving here even worse. Glad that idea got shot down pretty quick.

I generally get my Christmas shopping done the month before, and when I lived in the cities, would enjoy people watching on the day before Christmas at the MOA.  I would sit back and see large hoards of people destroy the meaning of the season, be it Winter Solstice or the Birthday of the Guy that was actually born in Spring.

The worst of the human condition, all with fresh Cheese Curds.

I would normally do my shopping at Southdale (I used to date the granddaughter/head case of the developer) or Ridgedale.  MOA was like taking people to Disneyland when you lived in Orange County.  You went there, but only when necessary or for pure entertainment value.

The new(er) roller coasters were fun.

It's a large enclosed building full of various stores and shops, but that's not important right now.
