I'm (blindingly) white of Irish-English descent, but by way of Australia and not the American South.  Am I still a cracker?

Also, my last name is Irish, but I've never been to Ireland and at best I've got 1/4 Irish ancestry.  Am I a mick?

Jeantel said that Martin told her that a "creepy-ass cracker" was following him.

So Hispanics are "creepy-ass crackers" ?  I've had it wrong all this time. Sorry, my bad. All this time I thought it meant creepy-ass white guys. My black friends are going to be SOOO disappointed, But rest assured, I'm going to give them a hard time about it.

Huh, interesting. I've only heard people say it was from slave owners "cracking" their whips.
Paulagate is still bullshiat, though.

I prefer peckerhead or honkie.  Whitey's that would frequent black neighborhoods for certain needs wouldn't get out of their cars. That's why they were called honkies.

It is interesting that the lying ignorant totally successful and attractive person can take the stand in a murder trial and say with a completely straight face that "cracker" isn't "racialist".

Seriously, I'm somewhat sick of the double standards.  It's not that I find "cracker" so offensive, but if I'm honest I'd have to admit to using the n-word in my past and I don't think I'm racist.

Cracker or the "N-word" are terms that sometimes get thrown about when you're pissed off and the target of your anger is either white or black.

What's interesting is that using one of those words can ruin your career - or make it possibly.  I had never heard of Paula Deen until a couple of weeks ago, but it's considered normal if black people use the other word and they don't even consider it "racialist"

For some reason, I'm reminded of a piece of wisdom I saw on The Jeffersons many years ago.  George Jefferson was upset that Lionel was going to marry a white woman.  George was saying their children would be zebras.  I'm not even sure who said it, but the line was something like "Why should he care if their kid is a zebra, they don't mind having a father-in-law who is a jackass?"

Good old George Jefferson.  RIP Mr. Helmsley.

I suspect if you call a real Irishman or Scotsman "cracker" he'll ironically confirm the appropriateness of the epithet by cracking your face open with his fist, his forehead, or even a rolled up newspaper.

It's a pejorative, derogatory term, certainly... but "Racist?"

Until I see a cop yelling it at the guy he's beating on the ground, I don't think you're quite clear on what Racism actually is.

What if the black person is Obama who's also Irish (on his mom's side)?

Then he'd just be callinging you a fellow cracker all friendly-like, in which case beating up on him probably would be a bad idea.

Well, not only that of course, there would also be that whole "Secret Service taking you to a previously undiscovered level of pain so fast it makes your head spin" thing to factor in.

But it's your decision, Bro.

Choose well.

Being white it is very hard to get offended by anything I have been called. Cracker sounds like a tasty treat or an ass kicker depending on it's context. And honky sounds cute. Peckerwood? That is LOL. Being white is pretty awesome. Like Louis C.K. said "you can be white and go to any period in time and it would be great." Pretty much. I am as liberal as they come too.

sadly, a lot of black people don't know the origins of the term "cracker" beyond something Chris Rock said in a few movies and stand-ups.

CSB time

I was in school in the southern california area and my black roommate called me a cracker/cracka.  I said to him, I will gladly get out my whip and show you what a cracker looks like n*word.  He was taken aback from my response.  He apparently never knew what the interpretation of the word cracker came from other than music references.  He told me that was uncalled for, I simply told him that the word cracker comes from the white person on the plantation that would crack the whip, and if he wanted to call me one, I would show him what he was truly saying.  Amazingly, he wasn't upset at me using the n*word, but more me asserting the white oppression over black people, and I tried to explain to him that using the word "cracker" was doing just that.

Don't like white people calling black people attractive and successful african americans, then don't call white people attractive and successful european americans.

we got along fine after that, but he truly never knew what the word meant.

/side CSB a lot of people in SoCal are uptight and got offended at the following joke (circa 2001): Q: What is white and goes up?  A:  A retarded snowflake.  Apparently that was offensive to snowflakes and their supporters in the area.

I've always found racist terms describing white people to be hilariously adorable. I prefer "cracker" to "honky," but I love to be called "honky-ass cracker," mostly because I love xkcd and always mentally move the hyphen to the right.

I'm ok with the word "cracker". It's "paper-face" that puts me on edge. Mostly because in Grade 10, Jimmy Sam and several of his large first nations friends would first call us a bunch of "farking ass-licking paper-faces" before proceeding to kick the shiat out of us.
