That's a very under-rated movie, and I was impressed at how explicity Cohen called Hollywood celebs who do private gigs for dictators , essentially, whores

This.

You really have to know some of the alleged quirks and interest that some of these dictators have to really appreciate that movie. For example the dictator's obsession with bot bands was poking fun at Kim Jong and his supposed love for boy bands. Or the dictator referring to Donald Duck cartoons when talking about the nuclear missile was a reference to Kim Jong's fascination with American cartoons. Once you know this the movie becomes even funnier.

Yeah all those hidden gems make it even funnier. Like his all female body guards ala gaddafi and the look alikes ala Saddam and his sons.

It gets even funnier.  The  renaming things after himself schtick was based on the last leader of Turkmenistan who did that to the days of the week.  and the  exact Guy J-Lo was playing for recently "won" the National horse-racing debry and it's multi-million dollar prize, despite video of him falling off the horse during the race...   And apparently this concert was sponsored by a Chinese oil company trying to land a contract for oil exploration in Turkmenistan, so that syncs up perfectly with the movie too

I wonder if some celebs hang out with Dictators because they secretly envy them for their power.

Think about it.

They could jail/execute anyone who doesn't like their music/acting and greatly restrict the access of the paparazzi, an any time  they have an opinion; the whole country has to listen.

I thought it was common knowledge that music industry and Hollywood types do private gig for the domestic and foreign wealthy.  Why all the uproar now?

There are good moments.  I can't say it's a good movie, but there are definitely good moments like the helicopter ride.

/Especially the first half hour where he's actually a dictator.  That is a glorious satire.

1. Receive large sum from morally dubious source.
2. Apologize after public backlash.
3. Cash check, make deductible charitable contribution from proceeds.
4. Profit!

(Borrowing one of the best digs in the movie)
You could let 1% of the people have all the nation's wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes. And bailing them out when they gamble and lose. You could ignore the needs of the poor for health care and education. Your media would appear free, but would secretly be controlled by one person and his family. You could wiretap phones. You could torture foreign prisoners. You could have rigged elections. You could lie about why you go to war. You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group, and no one would complain. You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests.
