woo hoo!
Go Leafs!!

But he was kind of a goat for his team through much of the rest of the Stanley Cup Finals.  So Toronto seems like a nice fit.

I know sports has a "it's just business" mentality towards these things, but is it really a smart business move to trade away a guy currently beloved by the fans, who could be counted on to move a shiatload of jerseys this year?

Very sad to see him go. Hell, I still miss Byfuglien too.
Yeah, it's business, but sometimes the business side sucks.

They did the same with Byfuglien. But that is just the nature of sports these days.

The only way a Leaf player gets a day with the Cup.

The Blackhawks have made the Stanley Cup 2 out of the last 3 years because they don't make decisions based on emotion. Bollard was going to cost them next year and, while they have cap room this year, lots of guys are going to be getting a pay bump next year and its going to cause cap issues. So they moved Bolland and Frolik, who was also going to be getting a pay bump.

2013-07-01 03:45:10 PM
He's kinda-sorta a Toronto kid, so after winning the Cup twice already and headed for a Maple Leafs team actually looking on the up and up...I'm sure he'll be fine.

The Hawks profited from a shortened season that led them to the Cup, and they'll lose a talented and beloved player because of the CBA that gave rise to that same shortened season. The end is the beginning and the beginning the end.  The snake eats itself. And so on and so on and so on.

Yeah it is. The Salary cap drops 6 million in 2013-14.

Something along the lines of "Bolland couldn't be a Stanley Cup hero because the Hawks didn't legitimately win the cup. They beat the Wings on bad calls and a double deflection so the Cup actually belongs to Detroit. Chicago is full of cheaters and my butthole hurts real bad and I'm jealous that I'm from such a festering shiathole."

You gotta crack some eggs to make an omelet, subby. Sure, I wish the Hawks could keep all the pieces of the Cup winning team around, but the economic reality of the salary cap era means some hard decisions need to be made.

Capgeek has them at $9.5M for next season.  Losing Frolik sucks because he was great on the PK, but he was a 4th liner on the team and at a $2.3M cap hit, he needed to produce more offense.   Bolland made a clutch goal for sure, but was a minus rating for the regular season and playoffs and there are injury concerns as well.  Bickell was a main reason why they even made it to the Final and he took a hometown discount to stay with the team.  With the kids coming out of Rockford, and the majority of their core intact, I'm not too worried about the Hawks going forward.  Stan Bowman did a pretty damned good job this draft IMO.

2013-07-01 04:39:42 PM
I hope they can put together a PK unit as good as or better than this season's was. Still, keeping the core intact is the main thing. Role players will certainly be found. At least they could keep Bickell this year when they couldn't hold onto Byfuglien after 2010.

Next season should get pretty crazy.

The phrase "hometown discount" is flying around here a lot, too.  It's just not realistic to think someone who helps bring a team deep into the playoffs should "suffer" because of it.  And on the same side, it's not fair to ask a team to give you a disproportionate raise just because you became a free agent at an opportunistic time.

Yeah, 4 million a year for Bicks isn't any kind of hometown discount I can think of.  If he continues to improve then that contract will be fine, and I know the power forward type usually takes longer to develop so this might be Bickell coming into his prime years.  He was obviously much better in the playoffs than he had been in the regular season, but his regular season this year was pretty clearly than his prior year also.

I think they'll miss Frolik more than Bolland due to breaking up the KruFro penalty kill combo that worked so well this year.  But they got a whole mess of picks for guys who were not in their top 6, and cleared some cap space to bring back some of the guys who were going to be free agents or wait around and see if there's anyone who wants to sign with them on the cheap to chase a Cup.

The problem is the condensed scheduling of things created by Bergman's 3rd lockout. If there was a normal schedule, there would've been more time between Bolland being a hero and this trade.

Plus, what does it say that in terms of quantity that Bolland was worth more than Cory Schneider?

/Still can't believe that trade

The real headline here is that the Blackhawks, as result, had  eight picks in one of the deepest, most talented NHL Drafts in years.

I suppose that depends on how deep you feel this draft actually was... 9th overall v. 51st, 117th and a fourth rounder (no higher than 91st) next year...

But yea, that Schnider trade is a head scratcher... there was a rumour of a better deal, all but done with Edmonton that fell apart at the last min. had the (7th) pick, prospect, and a player.

Actually the Hawks havent been profitable for some time. They are around $10 to 20 mil under profit business-wise and the owners have been moving money from other profitable businesses in order to pay for salaries and what not. Remember Wirtz is owner of Wirtz Corporation and Beverage which brings in tons of money- enough to make the Hawks do what they want to do and not be in debt.

Other hockey stuff going on today...

Tim, the tool, man(!) is looking to get back between the pipes somewhere.  That's nice.

Olympics are just about a lock... 5 hr meeting today in NYC, all done but the handshakes and signatures...

Keith Ballard has been put on waivers by Vancouver.   I guess 2 assists in 36 games makes it a little hard to justify the $4.2M cap hit.

Not actually Today, (was Friday) read about it today... Glendale city council pulled a fresh new wrinkle out of their hat, which should pretty much kill the deal and force the league to move the team. The vote should be tomorrow.
I'm sorry, DG.
Long story short, as far as I can gather, Glendale wants a matching out clause if the losses get too big. My understanding is that none of the other 29 rinks municipalities has anything even close to this in their arrangements.

No, Glendale is the clown shoes here and have been from the beginning. The ownership group KNOWS Glendale can't win. As I've said on here before, Glendale is getting farked up the ass either way. They have to pay $8-10 million a year to pay off the bond that financed the construction of that arena. That bill doesn't go away if the Coyotes leave and nothing takes its place.  But if they make the deal and keep the team there, at least Glendale is getting farked up the ass with lube. There would still be something going on there bringing money into the town. No one can replace 40+ major professional sporting events every year.
