that's not a gaffe, it's reality. Note how often Israel has been caught spying on the U.S.

America cannot fight terrorism unless we spy on our allies and gain information about pending trade agreements.

The proper statement would have been, "We apologize wholeheartedly and in the future will strive to keep this more on the down low."

What, like you never read your sister's diary?

nekom: Well... it's not.

A friend of mine works for the State Department and he's told me that, whether you are or not, everybody considers everybody else a spy. You just have to assume that the other guy will pass on information, no matter how minor.

That being said, the US has only said that it doesn't spy on any member of the "Five Eyes" (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and US). I would assume everyone else is fair game.

Yep. Allies have been spying on allies since the invention of spying.

Let me guess, next we'll be shocked to find out that the DoD has plans for the invasion of Canada, Mexico, and the UK?

Everybody spies on everybody else.

While everybody knows that, you're not supposed to say it.  People like to believe that certain nations are like friends so that they can wail and moan whenever one of these friend nations betrays us.  Enjoy the freedom fries.

Allies SPY on EACH OTHER!?
&&& This is acceptable???

Tell that to any Israeli or Jew that's been accused of dual loyalty / spying.
Wait for them to stop laughing at the obvious double standard...

OK, to be perfectly fair, he's got a point on this one. Not only do all nations spy on their allies, the fact that they do is actually an important part of diplomacy. The various networks of spies provide a "back channel" for forms of communication that, for whatever reason -and there are many reasons, though some are better than others- can't be carried out openly. Nations know about this, and in fact they depend on it.

This does not excuse certain other activities that have been carried out more recently, which are themselves put to very different purposes. But this is not something that should be lumped in with those evils.

I'm starting to really like this whole Snowden fallout thing. It's the modern intelligence version of walking into a Victorian dinner party and say "Here' a photos of those two people farking!"

It's not that secrets were given out. It's that "things you just don't say" were given out. Things everyone knows but refuses to admit. The elephant in the room. Now every party is pathetically trying to pretend to be morally superior while working hard to deny the fact that everyone is shiatty in this way.

... and nothing of value will be done to change a thing, ultimately. PRISM will continue and we're just less likely to pretend an entirely practical thing like government can act in an ethical way and fulfill its function. Personally I'll be happy if this doesn't kill the credibility of anyone demanding greater public oversight of the US government (I'm a pessimist so apologies if I come off as sewing FUD here).

I, for one, am outraged that we don't take EVERYTHING our allies say as god's honest truth.

No need for independent verification. We're allies! That's like being blood brothers.

Speaking of, anyone want to play a game of Diplomacy?

2013-07-01 12:45:12 PM
Well, who else ya gonna spy on?  Unless you are hated by everybody, like Best Korea, most countries have more friends/neutrals than enemies.  Besides, your 'friends' are selling your secrets that they found out by spying on you.

They have to justify their budgets somehow, so all the CIA dorks and their foreign equivalents play these fun little games with each other where they take turns pretending that they're James Bond. Boys with toys, and so on.

I just don't get it. Having to spy on allies means we don't have a rich enough dialog and mutual trust with them. If we could manage that, we'd have no need to spy on them.

All this distrust and spy vs spy tactics among allied nations is just plan ridicu-

Yeah, I'm getting pretty sick of all the mistrust.

The world is structured now in such a way that we could all be acting as one nation and using our combined military to root out the last remnants of dictators, warlords and slave traders.  Unfortunately we continue to allow our leaders to treat our planet as a chess game, where their lives are never at stake but our lives are smashed into each other for their benefit.

Chess is a game built on never trusting the man on the other side of the table and questioning every move he makes.  Maybe we need to pick a new game to use as a metaphor for geopolitics.  Or maybe stop treating it as a game altogether.

How is this a gaffe? People don't think this happens?

Israel has been caught spying on the US, including it's nuclear program, multiple times over the last 40 years. The British spy on the French and vice versa. Russia spies on ALL of it's allies.

Some people just have a better stratego in this.

Until humanity evolves to a social level beyond  homo sapiens,or there is a catastrophy which wipes out the majority of human life on earth, you will never see a united world government. Even in fictional universes where there IS one, there was some kind of cataclysm to force humanity to unite against a common enemy, and many of those universes constantly deal with strife, rebellion, piracy, etc.

It's a wonderful thought, but there is everything from religion and creed issues, to joe whiteguy in his fortified bunker telling everyone about Agenda 21 and the coming holocaust that keep it from happening.
