Carlton Bailey's son Justin got drafted by the Sabres in the second or third round, too. Good draft for relatives of NFLers, I guess?

I'm guessing the headline is referring to McNabb not knowing the NFL's OT rules - that ties were possible.  Just a guess though.

If only they knew Seth Jones pedigree... pretty good story there too. And he was picked 4th.

I any hockey team is gonna draft a black guy, I'd expect it to be the Oilers. They actually had 3 black guys on the roster at once.

I think actually it was 4: Anson Carter, Mike Grier, Sean Brown, Georges Larocque.  But for some reason my brain is saying there was a 5th for awhile too...

Hm, of course maybe my memory is faulty.  Clearly Sean Brown isn't black now that I look it up, but I swear there was a black defenceman on the team at the same time as Grier, Carter, and Larocque....

Um...I hate to break it to ya, sporto, but only 2 Americans were drafted in the first round. Those players were drafted by American teams. You have to go all the way down to the 83rd pick before an American is picked by a Canadian team.

So...you were saying?

I seem to recall at some point the country with the highest per capita representation in the NHL was Barbados. So many people from there immigrated to Canada they were over-represented in hockey vs countries like Canada/US etc because its such a small population center. So even the 4 or 5 players was a higher percentage than say, Canada with hundreds of players.

/useless information

/not sure if its still true

Yes.  Michael McCarron.  The next American drafted by a Canadian team was the 84th pick, not the 83rd.

The same genetic advantages people of West African descent tend to enjoy in basketball and football are easily translated to hockey.  And soccer for that matter.  If the US could get a soccer ball into the feet of all the 5'10' shooting guards who don't have a prayer of every making it in the NBA, we'd absolutely dominate international soccer.  Just completely own it.

Except, by the time that 5'10" ex point guard knows he's only gonna be 5'10", his Spanish rival has trained at Barcelona for 7 years.

/ The USMNT's talent pool is already athletically superior to most every other country's. The problem is that athleticism is about number 6 on the list of top 10 attributes required to develop soccer talent.

That's disingenuous to say the least.   Other countries kids grow up with that soccerball glued to their feet at all times.

Basketball players (in certain positions) are frequently grabbed late in life/school when their size is starting to get noticed.  Same thing with American Football (again, certain positions).   Foreign soccer players figure if you don't have it by 13 you're probably never going to get it.    I would argue that there is no way you can give a high school player a soccer ball and expect him to be anything close to competitive on an international level.
