Good thing he says what brand of preamps he uses in the video description.  Like most people, I was really interested in that.

Cool.
Just not very.

That sucked for 3 seconds.  It might suck for longer but I turned it off

Seconded.

Or maybe he just gets sick of answering the same 5 questions for every single video he uploads.

Too many notes

I don't know, I was kinda impressed.
I took drum lessons for years and years and was just never any good at it.  it's sad to WANT to be good at something and just NOT be.
So, like I said, I was somewhat impressed by it.

I read the headline expecting to hear the theme played on a steel drum.  Like this..  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0iHCCZzIPM

I enjoyed that far more than I intended to.  Hell of a lot more entertaining than watching someone play along with YYZ.  I mean, at least this guy came up with his own drum part as opposed to just trying to ape someone else.

Coming from a talentless oldschool metalhead (but with many talented musician friends), as a "metal" drummer, that guy sort of sucks... original idea, pretty poor execution...

And what's up with his kit? Did I miss the memo that more cymbals = more cool?

Vadrum did it first (and better, IMO). His SMB2 and SMB3 videos are pretty good too.

He's no Geddy Lee, but its OK.

Drummer here.

I could never do what this guy does. But I still don't like it. I've never understood dudes that eq their drums to such an extent that you can't tell the difference between an 8" tom and an 18" floor tom- every drum sounds the exact same. Why not just play an e-kit at that point?

Meh, Group X did it better 15 years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvELT5aIo9A

he is whacking too much brass.  he should save that energy for his wife.

darch: every drum sounds the exact same.

You may want to schedule a visit with your local audiologist.

So basically this guy is playing the drums while Super Mario music plays sometimes.

he's no  Steve "The Mad Drummer" Moore

That was pretty conventional technically clean metal drumming there.  Better keep yourself away from any real soloist.  Even Buddy Rich would probably confuse you.

I love metal, but drummers like this are one of the reasons i can't stand most death metal and modern metal stuff. i'll take the raw blasts, hardcore-style beats, and lumbering grooves of good black and doom metal any day of the week.

Triggering anything other than the kick seems like cheating to me.

I don't care what the neighbors say...Bonham was pedal God.

/single pedal, just as fast.  Good times...

Jesus, lay off the damn cymbal

Granted, I was listening on a laptop, but you canNOT deny that those are riDICulously eq'd and lifeless drums.

What's your position on the double kick?  Are high hats kosher?

I have no beef with using samples if it's done right. These came across as flat and unresponsive.

Speaking as a bassist, the one thing I want out of a drummer is conviction in their playing - if you're gonna dig in and be aggressive, I want to see drumming like Tommy Lee - hit the drums like you mean it!

To be playing 'metal' yet remain so calm and concerned with precision... is comes across as disingenuous to me.

But, fortunately we're talking about music, and there's an audience that appreciates all the hard work this guy's put in. I can appreciate it, but I'm not a fan of it.

Well, they're samples.

I have a double kick pedal, it's not triggered.  Triggering hi-hats? Get outta town.

You could say he is a skilled drummer but that had nothing to do with Super Mario Brothers theme.  It seemed like to me that he was just playing whatever he felt like while the Mario Bros themed was played over it.
