I'm not sure who to pull for. My daughter wants Italy to win, cause they're "hot".
I'm just hoping for good games.

Should be fun. El Shaarawy is starting, which is good for Italy as long as they can get him service. He's a hell of a finisher.

as long as italy loses, i'll be happy.

I think the keeper gets credit for that one - it was headed in on his efforts alone

I agree, with Alejandro, it's BS if FIFA takes Astori's goal away from him like this.

Now FIFA are giving the goal back to Astori. One, good for them, but two, why'd they think to give the goal to Diamanti in the first place?

textbook goal, kinda surprised buffon didn't get that. wasn't the hardest hit shot.  i guess the other angle would show how he was out of position.

Do remember, the unrest likely won't stop with the World Cup. There's an Olympics only two years further down the road.

Nations have a way of bundling their international attention like that:

Brazil: 2014 World Cup, 2016 Olympics
Russia: 2014 Olympics, 2018 World Cup
United States: 1994 World Cup, 1996 Olympics
United States again: 1982 and 1984 World's Fairs, 1984 Olympics
Japan: 1998 Olympics, 2002 World Cup
China: 2008 Olympics, 2010 World's Fair
Spain: 1992 Olympics, 1992 World's Fair
Mexico: 1968 Olympics, 1970 World Cup
Germany: 1972 Olympics, 1974 World Cup
Sweden: 1956 Olympics (equestrian events), 1958 World Cup

Alittle, probably enough to move him, it was a bad play; not enough to throw him 15 yards down pitch flying around.

Nymar is due for a yellow for a bad flop, but I can't see any ref giving him one during a home WC, no way that happens.

Let's be clear: if security doesn't hold outside and those protestors are inclined to go into the stadium, they are making a beeline for the pitch for sure.

Don't know how exactly I want that to turn out. It's a good game (if chippy), but you have to understand why they're angry.

yookaloco: ESPN.com reporting Neymar has been elected president of Brazil in an inpromptu election.

Heh, and Barca fans are rubbing their hands at the prospect of Neymar AND Messi picking teams apart.

MBK: Spain has played 2 really bad games back to back.  Makes me wonder if teams are catching up with them or if their style is getting old or both.

Ian mentioned about Spain not using a "false 9" in their formation.  Maybe a good time to start using it again.

I think it's more Brazil countering it effectively and Spain not dealing with it well. Good passing can wear out a team trying to press hard, but Spain has not been passing as well as they should.

People have found out the system. The problem is that Spain has great footballers in defence and not great defenders. The defenders get found out by teams who have the skill to go at them.

In attack Spain do not look to make that killer ball so if you stand off them a bit, keep your shape, press a bit they will pass the ball between defenders all night. See Barca vs Chelsea in the CL final or here.

Yeah, there's a lot of footage to see on Spain if you look at Barca games, seeing 7 of them play for that team. So if you follow what other teams did to beat Barca, they can do the same to pick apart Spain

That is the peril of taking so much of your national team from one club. A whole lot more gametape to look at to see what works against you.

Plus Barca have had their bacon pulled out of the fire by Messi's sheer brilliance more than most people will admit. Without a Messi the tikka-takka system just means you have possesion and no goals.

This game actually reminds me of the 1998 World Cup final, where Brazil lost to the host nation 3-0, and also got to the final through a grueling semi decided with a shootout.

2013-06-30 09:42:50 PM

VTGremlin: That is NOT a red card.

Why not?  He was the last man back, Neymar had clearly beaten him in a goal scoring position.  Pique's foot was elevated past where the ball would have been if it was on the ground at his foot.  He not only took away a goal scoring opportunity (at that point, with pique beat, Jo and Neymar were in 2 on 1), but it was also violent conduct.
