macdaddy357: I hope that the court rules that Queensryche is a dissolved entity, and neither group may use that name. It is a longshot, but would serve them all right.

Not really. This whole trainwreck is Tater-Tot's fault (along with his Sharon Osbourne-like wife). Go dig up his EPK. It is PURE COMEDY. Except he wasn't kidding.

This is what always bothered me about some metal bands. Statistically speaking, there should be a lot more metal band members with male pattern baldness around.

/The good thing is that finding a vocalist sounding like Tate isn't really hard, given that his style has been pretty iconic and oft-imitiated.

You are of course correct, and it still cracks me up that Scott Ian looked like that back in the day.  Is he the first guy who shaved his head because he was losing his hair?

The original Queensryche from WAY back was a hella insane live band. I was at one of the three LiveCrime concerts they did (all were in Wisconsin, lucky for us) and it was pretty much the best long-format single concert ever. And don't even bring that Pink Floyd shiat up in this conversation, that's like parking a Volkswagon next to a Ferrari.

Sadly, once Chris Degarmo bailed out, they started going to shiat. Geoff may be very intelligent and have a 5 octave range, but he's a lot like Lars Ulrich turned out to be, his ego and massive, throbbing vagina screwed it up for everyone else.

Chris was the heart of that band as far as the music went. Geoff did some good writing and lyrics, yes, but the music was mostly Chris. Sad they couldn't keep it together.

Tate's solo band has a solid lineup but it's not Queensryche any more than Bikky Sheehan and Steve Vai were Van Halen.

Queensryche were awesome until Tate drove it into the ground with horrible grungy non-metal albums.  Now that they have a singer who can actually hit the notes, actually likes metal, doesn't have a power-hungry wife, doesn't steal fans' iPhones, doesn't spit on and try to stab his bandmates, and doesn't tell the audience that they suck, they seem to have a new life.  I hope this leads to a second chance at success for them.  The new guy has an INCREDIBLE voice.

Exactly. Megadeth looked like that. Exodus looked like that. Death Angel looked like that. Pretty much everyone I ever saw play metal before 1995 looked like that. Motorhead did feature more facial hair, I suppose. The actual simpering, "power-ballad"-spewing hair bands went in for a little more hair color and eye makeup, as best I remember.

/ CSB, or something like that: A former friend of mine once told a couple of the guys in Metallica,"You farking hippies need a haircut!". They got the haircuts. Took them about 15 years to get 'round to it, though. Then their albums started to suck.

My understanding is this whole thing started with Tate selling the movie rights to Mindcrime and not only not telling the band, but keeping all the money.  Serious dick move.

In retaliation the band fired his wife as manager and his (daughter?) as fan club president.  Tate didn't take it well, and was a douchbag onstage.

Things went downhill from there.

There are quite a few hairmetal acts that split in two.  L.A. Guns, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Great White are the ones I remember off the top of my head.  Queensryche isn't hairmetal though, even if they kind of tried with Empire.

/New album is really really good.  Shockingly so.//I meant the one by the REAL QR, with Todd on vocals.

I had the chance to see Geoff Tate's version a few weeks ago at a small venue but didn't go because the whole is truly the sum of its parts. Nobody can sing the songs like him, but the band is just as important. It's like with Live, Ed Kowalczyk got dollar signs in his eyes after all those years and POW, that's the end of it.

And somewhere Chris DeGarmo is laughing, although both sides claim they're on good terms with him.

What makes this even funnier is that Parker Lundgren, the guitarist in the non-Tate 'ryche, was married to the aforementioned fan club-running stepdaughter for a few months.  Judging by where he is now I think it's safe to say we know whose side he's on.  Geoff must have absolutely loved that he was throwing these out in the crowd too:

Orgasmatron138: I love Tate's vocals and lyrics, but his version sucks.  It breaks my heart to say it, but it's brutal.  Event he last few Queensryche albums with him are bad.  It's like he just discovered 90s music a few years ago.

Non-tate Ryche sounds pretty good now.  I watched some of their live footage, and they seem pretty rejuvenated.

This is the polar opposite situation from when Rob Halford left Judas Priest for a while.  That was actually kind of awesome, because Halford is awesome on his own, and Priest found a really good vocalist to replace him.  In effect, it was like Priest doubled their power.

Well, derailing this topic even farther, but the Judas Priest split up showed where the talent was in that band. And the answer was: Halford, Downing and Tipton. Fight and Small Deadly Space pretty much roared, while meanwhile JP replacement leather lungs Ripper showed he could match scream for bellow with Halford any day. It was pretty remarkable for a while.

Queensryche is nothing but a Queensryche tribute band without Tate. Even if he is a tool. He is/was the face of the band.

It's an old story. Singer and band split, band thinks they can just get a sound-alike guy and move on.

They're alright, but I'd just barely put them on the prog metal spectrum like Rush, and I have an incredibly low tolerance for unclean vocals so I don't listen to most of the heaviest stuff

The album of the year for me right now in the genre is Tesseract's "Altered State" (full album stream easy to find on youtube), though Haken and Dream Theater will hopefully give them a run for their money in September.

That was actually "loosely based" on the story of ex Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens. Allegedly a film company was in negotiations to do a biopic of Owens, but Priest were asking for too much money so made this one instead.

Snapper Carr: Have you actually heard GT's QR? It's awful.

Yeah, it's weak.

The actual QR has been close to awful and silly (cabaret show anyone?) for years now, supposedly because of his dictatorship or something after DeGarmo left. But Tate's singing of the good QR stuff is irreplaceable. It's like if GnR had fired Axl and got another guy.

The Queensryche with the new singer and the new stuff sounds like a Queensryche tribute band. It's not bad music, but there really is no point to it. And for live shows, I can hear other guys anywhere sing Mindcrime covers.

2013-06-30 08:38:41 PM
How quickly some Ryche fans forget DeGarmo wrote most of HiTNF and even convinced them to let him sing a song on it.

There are stories going around that although he did want to pursue his plane flying, part of the reason he left was his inability to get along with Tate (and it had been going on for awhile.)

He even came back for Tribe and originally wanted to tour, but he and Tate couldn't work it out.

They were one of the only metal bands in the 80s who wrote intelligent songs, so it kinda stuck by default.  Most of the songs on Rage For Order could be considered prog, especially Screaming In Digital.  That album was ahead of its time.

The genre was just developing during the bands early days.  They were an important band for pushing the bar, but got were sounding somewhat ordinary compared to the likes of Dream Theater and Symphony X and others by the late 90s.

We're talking about prog metal here, which Wikipedia states mid 80s as the date for its cultural origin.  We're not talking heavy metal or prog rock.
