Geoff Tate is a gigantic douchenozzle.

/ He recently played in a local Vegas casino under the name Geoff Tate's Queensryche. I doubt the venue held more than five hundred people.

Wow, that sucks.

Can't all the Queensryches just get along?

Sounds to me like maybe the band that has 3 original members (+1 guy who joined the original band in 2009...) has more authority to the name than the band that only has 1 of the original members.  That's just me though.

I love Tate's vocals and lyrics, but his version sucks.  It breaks my heart to say it, but it's brutal.  Event he last few Queensryche albums with him are bad.  It's like he just discovered 90s music a few years ago.

Non-tate Ryche sounds pretty good now.  I watched some of their live footage, and they seem pretty rejuvenated.

This is the polar opposite situation from when Rob Halford left Judas Priest for a while.  That was actually kind of awesome, because Halford is awesome on his own, and Priest found a really good vocalist to replace him.  In effect, it was like Priest doubled their power.

Lead singer Geoff Tate reportedly confronted his bandmates after learning that his wife, also the band's manager, had been dismissed along with his stepdaughter, who ran the group's fan club.

Had this band never watched Spinal Tap?

2013-06-30 08:51:52 AM
What a fn train wreck.

Tate needs to just let it go and focus on his 'solo career' like most leads want to do at his age.

Yeah, I've heard about this..  I heard one of the new albums, sounded alright, but most of the 'reviews' were 1 star, complete with rants about how no one should buy it, and everyone should support the REAL Queensryche.. I don't remember which was which.

When Yes broke apart, lawyers untangled all the threads and determined that the band name went with Chris Squire, no matter whose band had the majority of early members.

I always liked Queensryche because it was the gateway band for musicians who had no idea what prog really was to call their own music progressive which of course led us to the Trans Siberian Orchestra, one of the signs of the apocalypse.

You won't be missed since you sound like a goat compared to 30 years ago or the new guy who can actually sing "Queen of the Reich."

Just bow out like the guy from Foreigner and accept the new.

I'm not sure who decided on the mixes for every album since Empire but they need to let someone without hearing aids do it. They sound lifeless. As if they are in a room with no treble. Maybe the band's kids played with the mixing board and turned up all the midrange sliders.

2013-06-30 09:08:33 AM
I can't believe there's enough of an audience to support one Queensryche much less two. Until this whole thing flared up I could have sworn they broke up in the mid-90s.

Didn't this happen with Great White too? You'd think each band would be trying to force the other to take the name.

"It's yours!"
"No you take it!"

There is only one solution to this.  One group becomes Kwēnzrīk and the other becomes Qůė

I like their 'Take Cover' album of cover songs, from 2007, once I got used to the odd mix of source material.. including a cover of 'Heaven On Their Minds' from Jesus Christ:Superstar.

'American Soldier' from 2009 was an alright concept that didn't sound that great.

Kill him, that's all you have to do.  He's a risk, and get the manager as well.

Smashed Hat: Geoff Tate is a gigantic douchenozzle.

And Todd la Torre can outsing him any day of the week. Geoff's voice is all but gone at this point, and his nepotism has been an ongoing issue for many years now. It was nothing more than a cashgrab by he and his wife.

Now that I have a choice of bands, I'll be going to see Wilton and La Torre as QR, not Geoff and a bunch of musicians for hire.

You'd think so, but then there are cases like War. The courts determined that the producer they were trying to ditch owned the band name, so the group touring as War only has one original member. The rest of the band works together under the name "Lowrider Band."

Queensryche is not a hair band, although they came up in that timeframe. Poison is a hairband. Motley Crue is a hairband. Queensryche is not.

No, like prog-rock it's something that does not exist naturally

Wow... I just listened to Mindcrime the other day on a whim. I had no idea it's been 25 years. Fark, I'm old.

I always loved Tate's vocals, but you know he was never going to keep that range as he got older. And apparently he's kind of a dick. Oh well.

2013-06-30 10:37:20 AM
Having heard both versions recently released albums, and having actually bought the self titled album by the version with the remaining original members, I have to give the edge to them. Tate's album, aside from being horribly mixed, sounds like a guy who found a bunch of dudes on the street, slapped together some tunes, and rushed to get his album out first. It has a couple of good moments, but otherwise sounds contrived. It doesn't help that it doesn't have a 'band' feel to it. It sounds like session guys did it, in a hurry, and not in a good way. The original mix was so bad the record company had to send it back to get remixed due to the awful reviews it was getting just for the mix alone.

'Queensryche' on the other hand, with LaTorre singing, sounds pretty good. Not a great album, but very solid, and aside from some issues with their mix too (wtf is wrong with engineers and producers these days, not everything has to be so loud in the mix) is a very good return to form, with elements of Rage, Mindcrime and Empire. Songwriting is much better too.

I don't know if the courts will weight sales, chart success and tour success as a measure of who gets to use the name, but I'd say all indications in that regard point towards the LaTorre fronted version with the original guys in the band.

Let's hope the 'wrong' version doesn't get the keys to the "Defiant".

we'll never convince the Romulans it was a transporter accedent

I hope that the court rules that Queensryche is a dissolved entity, and neither group may use that name. It is a longshot, but would serve them all right.

I hope the judge issues a permanent injunction enjoining anyone from ever performing a Queensyrche song again. I do have to say that Silent Lucidity is one of the most unintentionally hilarious songs ever written and to this day it makes me laugh whenever I hear it on an oldies station.

Should have been done when Chris Squire joined The Buggles and changed their name to Yes, too.

You are of course correct, and it still cracks me up that Scott Ian looked like that back in the day.  Is he the first guy who shaved his head because he was losing his hair?

Operation:  Mindcrime is one of my favorite albums of all time.  Saw QR on their Building Empires tour when they did OM beginning to end.  It was amazing.

OM2 is kind of shiatty.
