God I love Somalia. I love the fact that it's far away.

Are they going to try to claim the $5M bounty the US is offering for killing one of the guys?

Good might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but it tends to have numbers and technology on its side.

A Shambling Mound: Somalia really sounds like a very nice place. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Before the war, Somalia really was a beautiful place.  Some of the nicest beaches in the world, excellent food, and stunningly beautiful women.

Unfortunately, it got infested with religious nuts who turned it into a nightmare.

"We have informed their widows of their deaths, as they must now wear the clothes of mourning," al-Shabab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab told AFP news agency.

Is it strange that I thought he was going to continue with "Or we will kill them too." Because crazy is what I'm used to hearing from over there.

Throw in a group of landlocked former pirates just to spice it up.

I think ya might want to read a good parasitology or entomology book book before claiming it was religious folks that started the whole 'Somolia is a nightmare' thing.

The current "high risk" status for diseases in Somalia is due mainly to war.  Schistosomiasis was introduced by refugees from warfare and other population movements, according to the WHO.   Trypanosomiasis, typhoid fever and malaria are widespread, and were present before the war, but all of those are exacerbated by the war.  Somalia didn't have the kind of widespread insect-borne disease problems that many West and Central African nations have, because it was relatively dry, even before the droughts, so insect populations were kept low.  Waterborne illnesses were minimal at least in Mogadishu because they had effective water treatment.  It's only since the war that diseases have become a serious problem.

It is common for Americans to assume that everything in Africa is horrible and always has been, but in fact, that assumption is not accurate. The problems that Somalians are facing now are either directly due to sectarian warfare or indirectly exacerbated by it.  I'm not sure how familiar you are with the history of the region, but I assure you that it was not always a disease-riddled, violent, lawless hellscape.  In the 1960s, shortly after independence, it was considered one of the best tourist destinations in Africa.  It's really only since the 1990s, after the overthrow of the Barre regime, that things have been really dangerous.  (That's not to say Barre was a good guy, obviously.  He wasn't.  It's only to say that things have become much worse.)

Many of whom are my immediate neighbors and personal friends, and have very managed to find good careers and even open small businesses, despite the severe hardships they have faced.  I shall assume that your "airport newsstands" comment was not intended in a disparaging manner, but was a simple obersvation.

Given their use of machetes, that's not necessarily a bad reading.

Yes, just an observation - unfortunately, I've spent more time in midwestern airports than I have in Seattle. :(

I was hoping this was going to be a story where the killings happened for the good of the populace and not at the behest of another wanted man.

Large Somali community up here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Friend was telling me that some banks have started to forbid the transfer of money to Somali banks in fear of terrorist funding hrmm.

OK, cool.  You really should visit Seattle if you get a chance.  In Summer, it's one of the most beautiful places in the world.
