Yeah. I've decided I want to play like Bootsy. I can barely walk and chew gum, so I don't know why I'd think I can play like Bootsy. But I'm having a blast trying. For father's day, my kids humored me and played drum and guitar while I punished my bass. I learned my 6yo daughter has more funk than I can ever hope for. Oh, well. C'est la vie.

I played alto and tenor sax for about five or six years. Someday I want to take it back up. Right now, I can't afford a good tenor, which is what I would like to play. Hell, I can't afford a sh*tty tenor at this moment.

That's a damned shame.

Well, I could afford one if I stopped buying camera lenses and weed.  but, you know, priorities.

Greedy confession: I'd prefer you spend your money doing whatever it is that keeps my Saturday evening radio show (kinda) on schedule. So, unless you plan live acapella sax, I'd appreciate your not rattling my fragile little reclusive beer-soaked world. Thank you.

I actually have a friend from HS who went to Vet School at UF. She was doing post doctoral research on avian anesthesia. She would put chickens to sleep and wake them up. I called her the chicken gasser (anesthesiologists in general are often called gas passers as anesthesia is done with inhalation agents).

I figured if they had a catastrophe in the lab they could aways have lunch.

I've started looking at Vet Schools. I could go to Ross University for $186K. I think I may look a little closer to home. I hear it is hard to get in, harder than medical school.

That's a great pic of you on Mt. Juneau. Looks like it was a beautiful day.

I really have no excuse for not getting hiking. I don't even have to drive--there's a trail that runs through the back of my property that I could take for miles through the gorge. I'm just worn out by all the travel to games and then all the banquets/ceremonies and graduation activities. It seems unending.

I was walking down the trail and I noticed a flash behind me... kind of like a bugzapper or camera flash. Nobody was there, and I thought maybe it was a game camera or something... Didn't bother checking it out because it had just started raining and wouldn't you know it it was the ONE day I didn't have one of my 6 rainjackets with me... then not even a minute later the lightning starts.

I was once caught on a hilltop when a freak thunderstorm hit a picnic I was attending. About 7 lightning strikes between 20 and 150 yards around us. It felt like Armageddon. Several people were knocked flat, but no one was seriously injured. Just a lot of muddy clothes from trying to get as small to the ground as possible.

it's been in the 70s and 80s... THIS RECORD HEAT IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR

Way to deflect me like a pesky bear. You look different. Good different.

I didn't shoot you in the face with my 12 gauge.

/Thanks

You are quite the charmer

I do tours part-time... a couple weeks ago I had to explain to some old biddies from some nondescript place in the midwest why I was single. I explained that I sort of have a girlfriend, but we've reached an impasse in our relationship: she has a cat.

You know how hard it was for me to not explain the whole "lipstick on a cat's butt" thing?

Bathia_Mapes: Well, except for some minor differences the human body is pretty much the same for most people. As a vet you'd be taking care of all sorts of species, so it's not surprising that it's harder to get in.

I always thought it was because humans could tell you what is wrong and people can't.

I may never get in, I know two physicians who went to medical school after they couldn't get into vet school and I don't really want to pay $186K to go to school in the West Indies, but who knows. Next week I may want to be an anteater. It is just about change careers time again though.

Week 4 of Aikido. My back is still in pain from the flips I did 4 weeks ago. It doesn't hurt so bad when I'm in class, but after my kid thought it would be funny to jump on me while I was sleeping, I'm seriously thinking of going to the hospital on Tuesday. To visit him.

the bottom part of the trail I was not a fan of... the brush on the sides was really overgrown, kind of made me claustrophobic/ bearaphobic. Once I got to an overlook where I could see the tram, I felt better because I felt like I was making progress, and also the trail opened up. The "big" stream crossing was a bit unnerving because of the possibility of sliding off a wet or loose rock and going down the side. Some of the snow slide crossings were a bit unnerving as well. As far as the rest of the trail, it was actually pretty nice. Except for the woodchuck(?) turds... and then almost stepping on a woodchuck(?). I'm also still really tripped out by how close you can get to ptarmigan without them even noticing you.

I was hunting with my retriever years ago and she literally ran into the butt of a partridge. Scared the shiat out of her when that bird flew up right before her snout, and she hightailed it right back to the cabin. I still laugh when I think of Brandy, bless her soul.

you can also take Perseverance all the way to Granite Creek, up into that bowl, and then walk the ridge to the top of Mt. Juneau.  It's a lot less unnerving, but longer, and I think Perseverance is washed out again before Granite Creek.

Last time I did Mt. Juneau, I got a free helicopter ride to the top and just had to walk down the next morning.  The only tent I had at the time was around 15 pounds, so I had to shlep that home.  My legs were jelly when I got down, and I had to walk all the way home from the trailhead to Evergreen Ave.

Satan's Chocolate Starfish: hng: soosh: Isn't that a trip looking down at town like that? and what did you think of the trail and the dropoffs and stream crossings?

the bottom part of the trail I was not a fan of... the brush on the sides was really overgrown, kind of made me claustrophobic/ bearaphobic.

I flushed some grouse or ptarmigan one time by nearly stepping on them in tall grass.  I wasn't looking down at all and was afraid I had just almost stepped on a bear.

soosh: you can also take Perseverance all the way to Granite Creek, up into that bowl, and then walk the ridge to the top of Mt. Juneau. It's a lot less unnerving, but longer, and I think Perseverance is washed out again before Granite Creek.

Persevarance is good ***almost*** all the way to the end. (well beyond Granite Creek) There was a washout at some falls just before the end... old weird dude said it was about 6 years ago.

lol

When I used to clean gas wells, I remember walking all around a wellhead in head high grass setting up guy-wires for the drill mast. Took about an hour and a half. Then I cranked the well open, which creates a sound as loud as a jet engine and starts the ground shaking. Anyway, I'm up on top of this wellhead and when the sound starts, I see at least 4 deer jump up within the circumference of my guy-wires. I had been walking all around them all morning and they never moved. Just amazing.

it doesn't cost anything in most places.  there are trails that have specific "no camping" signs, but other than that, as long as it's not private land and it's a certain distance from the road, you can camp where ever you want.

and it's a "dry" cabin... no water or sewer/septic.

Not to mention... even though a Toyo stove is pretty efficient, it'll still be expensive as hell to heat in the winter.
