orbister: ARedthorn: I came back around to Christianity because I decided it fit my ideals best

It doesn't work like that. You don't decide what you think is right and then choose a religion which fits; you choose a religion you think is true and then adopt the beliefs it dictates, even if that means changing your mind about some things. If Christianity is true, Islam, Buddhism, Shinto and Scientology are wrong. There's no room for different religions to be right for different people based on their preconceptions.

I would have a lot more respect for anti-gay christians if at least some of them said "You know, I really fancy some hot, sweaty, man-on-man action ... but the Bible says no, so that's that", just as I would have more respect for creationists if they said "Hey, yes, all the scientific evidence points to the earth being 6 billion years old and life having evolved, but the Bible says different and I have to believe the Bible."

TL;DR: Pretending religion makes sense doesn't make sense.

So... it's not ok when someone follows a faith blindly... you have no respect for someone who explores their faith either?

To be specific- I was raised Christian, but ran into the fundamentalists, who decided I wasn't hardcore enough for them and declared me a heretic. I pretty well walked away from Christianity after that, but still believed in God or at least felt a need for spiritual expression.

So I explored. I asked questions. I refined both my morality and theology, before eventually discovering that I agreed with reformation-era Christianity, before the fundamentalists and extremists started poisoning everything.

I'm not saying that all religions are right- or entirely wrong either. They each get a few things right and a few things wrong. What I ultimately decided was that most of the stuff Christianity gets wrong could be avoided on a personal level, or tailored out of the faith- as church history will show has happened a number of times... if only the fundamentalists hadn't decided church history was worthless.

As for the unquestioning believer you describe... no- I have no respect for him. If his faith were strong, he wouldn't fear questioning it. If his faith were living, he wouldn't fear letting it grow. Instead, it is as brittle and dead as pure, unrefined iron...
I expect anyone with any faith- be it in God, god, gods or no god at all- to constantly test, refine and temper their faith... and that's a standard I hold myself to, most of all. If that's not something you understand or respect... I'm sorry. Categorize me as you will. I think I'll live.
