MurphyMurphy: I should literally be impossible for that train to be leaking an UNKNOWN substance.

How the fark do they not know?

Because train companies aren't first responders.

The conductor might have been injured and unable to tell them anything, such as "Here's the manifest of what we're carrying."

Also it could be treated sewage or something. Not exactly a military grade hazardous substance that requires a police escort to transport but more than enough of a threat to clear out people who live nearby so they don't get hepatitis or something.

Like I said, hopefully just a retarded reporter.

I thought (no authority here) that train company operations had to always know what's on all trains on the tracks at all times,

so that when there is an emergency they can tell first responders what they are dealing with before they even arrive at the scene.

Train company operations, yes.

You're presupposing, though, that anyone at the news station thought to ask; or that any of the first responders actually knows yet. The rule of thumb for approaching a hazmat spill is: Up wind, assume it's deadly, and I think fog it with water until told otherwise. Getting a report before you get to a scene is a luxury.

csb:

Many years ago there was a train derailment near where I lived involving toxic chemicals and they evacuated up to the building next to me, but not mine.

So naturally, my roommate and I fled the building, bought lunch and headed towards the scene so we could watch what was going on while we ate.

We sat on a hill overlooking the tracks and the train wreck was actually pretty boring but it was fun anyway.

When people read these stories, I think they get the idea that there is a toxic green cloud of gas or something that envelops and strangles everything in its path, but it's not usually like that.

I probably have cancer.

Ok, I believe you.  Sorry, I didn't mean for you to go through all of that.  I just think your view of HOU may be incorrect,  It's not perfect, but SA is mostly a tourist trap, I go there frequently too.  I travel for a living.  There's actually a lot of culture in Houston, you just have to actually go into the city.  Part of the problem is that we have so much sprawl that people think "I'm in Houston" and they're actually in the suburbs or one of lesser known neighbors.  We have about 8 cities so close to each other that you don't really know where you are sometimes.

You were in a shiatty part of town.
There are some really nice areas just not  where the lower income folk go. Getting around is a bit of a biatch because just mentioning expanding public transportation is enough to send the pearl clutching cake sniffers into a panic that "those people" might see the the fence of their gated area through a bus or train window.

The true test:  Does the city in question have a population of 7 figures?  Yes?  Than it's a shiathole by default.  1 million + people cant inhabit the same patch of land without ruining the land, the culture and any sense of morals and ethics.  And if that upsets you, you are one of those arseholes.  Truth hurts.

That's what I was going for. San Antonio is a decent place to visit, but shiat to live. Houston is decent to live financially, but lacks culture. Austin blows for cost of living, but has some culture.
