People lose jewelry. My wife bought a cheap ring to wear in place of her real wedding ring because she worked in a sketchy area. She put the fake ring on and the real one in the bag the fake one came in.

She threw the bag out the next day with the real ring still in it.

She now wears a fake version of her original ring.
