I'm not sure "cured" is the word you want to go with. Just replacing one addiction for another. Though, I assume pharmaceutical narcotics are at least somewhat safer than crap made in the Colombian jungle.

Ughhh, yeah, it's speed.

Oh, and cocaine is much tougher to put on your BlueCross plan.

Methadone, now with more meth!

/yeah, I know.  just roll with it

Cocaine is only addictive for a small subset of users.

Cocaine addiction can be cured by not using cocaine.

Ritalin out competes cocaine, but is addictive itself in much the same way.

Anytime I see a brand name in a news article it throws up red flags. Researchers don't use brand names.

But methylphenidate is hard to spell!

this is certainly true.

Ritalin completely wiped out my cocaine addiction.  I mean.. I have blue snot constantly now, but not having to put up with the stigma associated with being a blow-fiend has been really lifting.

In related news, Excedrin helped me get over my caffeine withdrawal headaches.

uh can someone enlighten me as to how ritalin compares to caffeine in terms of 'feeling'?

I was addicted to Ritalin for years.

This article doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

And Ritalin leads to Meth, and Meth leads to The Dark Side, which is a hell of a drug.

Well... I mean, yeah, I get your larger point. But is methadone really as bad as heroin, or is Ritalin as bad as cocaine?

I'm not saying they're MUCH better, and I'm not someone with any particular fondness or respect for how the (legit) pharmaceutical industry does its business. But I've been in the presence of the coked-out  and the Ritalin'd, and on the whole I'd say the latter group was better off. (And just to add weight to my methodology, the people I'm talking about were all wealthy college students who could afford either, and who were buying the substances illicitly in either case.)

If nothing else, as a matter of quality control. Say what you will about Big Pharma, but there are no poisons or fillers in their pills that they didn't absolutely intend to be in there.

Then, we can move them onto our sister drug, tilldeathdouspartitol (tm)

just give everyone free Desoxyn and we'd be a much happier society.  call it Soma

I guess replacing coke with Ritalin isn't quite as bad of an idea as replacing heroin with methadone, but I certainly would hate to see people start doing so on the basis of advice from people who have a financial stake in the sales of Ritalin. To the best of my knowledge no one has ever died from Ritalin withdrawal, so there is that. But I don't know of any confirmed cases of death from cocaine withdrawal without any mitigating factors so I don't see the point of making the "switch" in the first place.

On the other hand, methadone withdrawal can and will kill you all by itself. Unlike heroin withdrawal, which won't.

Had a friend who had a Ritalin prescription and she still did speed. And when there was no speed to be had she'd crush up the Ritalin and snort it. She was fun to hang out with when she wasn't on a crying jag.

I had a friend that used it to kick his habbit back in 97.  It worked.  It's the willingness of the addict to want to change ...I wonder if it would work for crack heads?

Yes, this works on the same principal that giving junkies methadone works... It replaces a socially unacceptable drug with a socially acceptable (or at least tolerable) one.

How about we stop acting like idiots when it comes to drugs? In the end, the biggest functional difference between coke and ritalin is that you can get one with a script and be certain of its purity, while the other comes from a "guy you know" and you can never be sure what's in there.

Honestly, just legalize coca tea/mate de coca (with the cocaine - it's technically legal in the US if decocanized) and let people figure out the rest themselves. Cocaine is not intrinsically evil, ritalin/methylphenidate is not intrinsically good, they are just stims but drug companies make money from one while farmers in South America will make money with the other. Use is not the issue, exactly, it's overuse and the consequences of making it unavailable and illegal that are the problems. Let's focus on helping people use drugs responsibly and teaching them to know when to not use drugs. Our current approach is stupid.

good luck getting ritalin on Long Island.

Also - has anyone pointed out to the AMA that requiring people with organizational problems to refill their Rxes by making appointments with fickle, time-wasting doctors every 90 days like clockwork might not pan out?

no way man.  Adderall is getting more and more processed... it's like they're farking shrink-wrapped every 3rd micrometer..  Adderall works, but it can't touch good ole no time release Ritas.

For the record I'm clean and I've seen more people die from opiate based pharmies than any street drug.  That shiat is widely available in every grandparents drug cabinet too.  How it's legal is f'n beyond me.
