That's what lawyers and accountants are for.  They can do more than sue people for downloading movies.

It's just another way for Hollywood to ensure that no movies ever break even.

Bucky Katt: oops sorry about that

It's actually just as appropriate for this thread.

Also, I wonder if this law will end up improving working conditions for at least some of the people in the industry. It seems like they can't possibly find a way to screw everyone. I suppose if anyone can it would be Hollywood.

Liberal or conservative, business thinks the rules are to be written for their advantage rather than in some sense that they would need to comply with someone else's agenda.

They already do this.

Your run of the mill big-time hollywood celebrity that campaigns for climate awareness, worker rights, a fair wage and a slew of other progressive nonsense may live in California but their primary residence is in a place like Sun Valley, ID or Park City, UT. The film studios they work at shoot in places like Texas or Georgia and they use only as much Union work as they can to keep the sound techs and writers from striking.

Twice.

Your party is nothing but Intellectual Luddites, and Extreme religious fundamentalists.

There are no more real small government, Fiscally responsible conservatives in office on any level of government that matters.

Prove me wrong. Name one.

Hollywood will be fine. As someone mentioned, lawyers and accountants can be used for more suing people over pirated movie.

Oh, thank god. I saw DIA say something rational and well considered in a thread the other day. I admit it, I panicked. The very foundations of my reality were torn asunder. I was adrift on a sea of doubt.

But now, everything is back to normal.

This is actually an excellent opportunity. Hollywood is highly motivated to make ACA work and yet is faced with a number of industry-specific implementation problems. If they can make it work (and they will), anybody can.

It's ironic because some people in Hollyweird are LIBERALS and live in CALIFORNIA.

Get it!?

fta Hollywood productions, for instance, might find it irksome simply trying to categorize employees

They're either demigod rainmakers, or bloodsucking minions. At least that's what my boss says.

Oh god, now the thread will derail into 300 comments of Captain Obtuse going 'And who exactly is MY party?' and 'I never specifically exactly said 'I support republicans' in those EXACT words and in that EXACT order so do not make assumptions as I vaguely cheerlead for them in a way where people can't technically nail me down on an actual stance.'

2013-06-29 10:54:48 AM
Between the rampant piracy and now this, the film industry will surely collapse.

2013-06-29 10:55:14 AM
The employer mandate should be stricken-- it should all be individual coverage. That's how the pool is increased, risk is diffused & premiums lowered.

2013-06-29 10:55:17 AM
Rose, though, doesn't expect studios to follow the route taken by Regal Entertainment Group, which operates the nation's largest chain of movie theaters. In order to rein in the costs of supplying health benefits associated with ACA, Regal said in April it would cut the hours of some employees so that they aren't classified "full-time."

Awesome.

Obamacare would have ruined the premise of Breaking Bad.

Just do what everyone else is doing. Cut hours, hire temps, and lower the value of the healthcare options offered.

Jeebus Christ you morons, I knew you were stunted but I never realized it was this bad.

Dancin_In_Anson: Heh. You dumb motherfarkers came out in droves for him. Reap what you sowed and be happy with it.

I don't pity the mega stars, studios and directors that plugged this abomination. They will never feel the pain of their poor decisions. It's the poor bastards in craft services that will being fighting to make ends meet on the 30 hour pay.

Hagbardr: Obamacare would have ruined the premise of Breaking Bad.

nay.

You could have Breaking Bad in any country that has socialized/single pay/forced admission to government program healthcare. You just need to film scene where the state hospital tells him that they can't start treatment for 6 months due to back long and that if he wanted to pay out of pocket the private for profit hospital could start treatment tomorrow.

Should take about 15 minutes of show time. Less if you do it with flashbacks.

For the most part, I am.  He's not perfect, but the biggest problem I have with him is that he's continuing Republican policies, but I can only assume that he's not doing so out of any great love of those policies, but because they're better than the alternatives.

Of course, he could be the second coming of Jimmy Carter and I'd console myself with the fact that at least that the closest Sarah Palin will ever get to the WH is by going on the tour.

Seriously, you expect buyer's remorse with McCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan as the alternatives?  lol

2013-06-29 11:09:17 AM
I have a great deal of faith that they will find a way in insure everybody whose name appears before the film's title during the opening credits.

2013-06-29 11:09:49 AM
Given that most people who are employed in Hollywood either get their healthcare through their union or buy their own insurance, I don't see where there's going to be any major change in the status quo because of Obamacare.

But if you want to freak out and run around with your underwear on your head, that's your right.

I'm a softie for animals, but that doesn't mean I want to sit in a box filled with rabid weasels.  It's still okay to discriminate based on behavioral differences (vs. innate differences), unless you're suggesting that modern Republicans can't help it because they're "born that way."

2013-06-29 11:13:48 AM
To be fair, Hollywood freaks out when you want writers to give you a coherent, reasonable script.

2013-06-29 11:14:41 AM

BMFPitt: Isn't basically everyone in Hollywood an independent contractor?

Only if you have an actual "company" to bill for your services.
Otherwise every production company uses a Payroll Service like the one mentioned in the article.
Technically all those using the Payroll service are employees of that Payroll Service.
I used to be an independent contractor in the film biz (had a separate company) and even I used one of those payroll services whenever I had to have employees (including myself).
It works sort of like PayPal, you pay no monthly fee and they bill you for the actual employee costs (including employer share) plus 3%.

2013-06-29 11:20:14 AM
I'm confidence that like the business world, Hollyworld's great minds will figure out how to work around ACA and screw people over.

Our clients need to know that the days of 100 percent employer-paid benefits at a certain executive level can no longer exist," Cox adds. "Their employees will need tools to navigate the state-sponsored insurance exchanges. In short, we have had to build a toolbox that accommodates our incredibly diverse client base."

Very happy with him.  I mean, did you see who our other option was?

I still think life would be better if our employer was not in charge of our healthcare.

2013-06-29 11:48:57 AM
You know what would solve this? Universal health coverage that isn't tied to employment.

2013-06-29 11:50:29 AM
It will be interesting to see what rates are like next year in the independent market.  I know the small business ones are rediculous, but I think independent ones are about to joint that club.  I'm just sick enough that I can't get insurance outside of work.

2013-06-29 11:57:45 AM
Meanwhile, the rest of the U.S. has moved on with their own lives and are glad to have Hollywood flounder in its own ignorance.

/wishful thinking
