Damn teabaggers, ramming through their pro-corporation agenda.  Obama pledged to "support legislation ...to institute a permanent ban on horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption" http://animallawcoalition.com/pres-obama-keep-promise-support-equine- s laughter-ban/ and those damn Republicans found some way to legalize horse meat anyway.

Oh... "Mr. Obama signed the spending bill by autopen on Nov. 18. He was traveling in Asia at the time the bill was presented to him, so he used the automated signature machine for the second time in his presidency."

Well, he's gonna fix it now... you can't blame him -- or any Democrat -- for not actually reading HR2112, right?

Standards are relative.

When the meat isle is full of lab grown goop, soy imitation and caterpillar burgers, todays prime rib aficionados will be lined up around the block for a good horse steak.

Dont know know when meat is grown in a lab, it tastes like despair.

Horses are prey animals and produce like them. There aren't enough horse farms in the world to take enough of them off the ranges to keep the rest from starving. Unless you want to introduce more four legged predators, but we don't really have the space these days.

Regardless of what you do, they will be someone's food...even if it's only worms.

Can't see the article so, will the meat be sold in the US or is it for export only? I certainly wouldn't mind trying horse if they sell it here. It would be another thing to add to my list of "Creatures I've Eaten" at anyrate.

Horse is pretty good. I doubt the FDA, or Food anD cowards Administration, would let sushi chefs sell it raw, but if you're in Japan and you feel like adventure ask for basashi. 馬刺し

An estimated 130,000 U.S. horses are shipped annually to slaughter in Canada and Mexico. Groups have quarreled for a decade whether a ban on slaughter will save horses from a cruel death or lead to abandonment by owners of animals they cannot afford to feed or treat for illness.

Banning their slaughter on US soil won't stop them from dieing it just means they have to be shipped to Canada or Mexico where we have no control over it and can't tax it or tax it's sale, not to mention the income taxes associated with the workers. They will be taken to Mexico and killed in whatever way is cheapest then packed as beef and sold to the unwary.

Leela: "I'll have the cholesterol-free omelet with horse-beaters."
Man: "And you, Sir? How can I horse you?"
Hermes: "I'll have a horse Coke."
Man: "Horse Pepsi okay?"
Hermes: "Nay."

It's generally leaner, cooks a little faster and is loaded with iron. Plus, older horses usually = more tender meat.

Not seeing the problem.

A lot of people would buy and eat horse meat if they could. You don't have to pony up as much for it.

Either that, or their owners will just put the old horses out to pasture, letting them die slowly. It saves the several hundred dollars it costs to put the animals to sleep. At least with slaughter they go quickly.

Also, things you might not know: horse is the primary source of meat they feed carnivores in zoos. Horses die, their bodies need to go somewhere, it's profitable to sell the meat.

Horse meat's already being eaten. You do the horses no service by opposing human consumption.
