Where does one go to buy a tank, anyway?

Just, uh, curious.  That's all.

full-size Army tank

As opposed to an Air Force tank?

The tank has rubber wheels

I'm starting to think the use of the word "tank" here carries the same journalistic meaning as "AK-47".

Somewhere around Mahopec, the illegal weapons begin to draw attention.  We had bazookas, glocks, AK-47's, TEK-9's, machetes, bayonettes and a tank.  Not that we needed all that, but once you get locked into a serious weapon collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.  What worried me was that tank.  There is nothing more hopeless than a man on a tank binge, and I knew the cops were going to find that thing soon enough.

Was that wrong? Should I not have bought a tank and put it in my backyard?

You never know when some gangbangers or serial killers try to harm you and your family and the only way to stop them is a tank.

And it's assholes like that why it's hard to get ammunition these days...

To the media, any armored vehicle is a tank.    The usual criteria of a large, heavily armored vehicle on tracks featuring a turret mounted, large caliber gun does not apply to the media.

"... 15,000 to 20,000 rounds of ammunition"

The US military will sell any private citizen a M-1 tank with the main gun disabled.

All that weaponry and all he did was shoot himself.

What a waste. If you're going to commit suicide, take a banker, politician, IRS agent or a Koch brother out first.
(Just sayin')

I never trust the police or media when they say fully automatic weapons.

Probably some belt fed semi autos or firearms with auto marked on the selector switch but no full auto internals

The tank was legal....the full auto's were not. 15-20K rounds is not a whole lot especially if you have a lot of guns. In an hour at the range I'll go through ~400 rounds, that's with just 2 pistols.

I was thinking the same thing.

Also, I don't understand subby's headline, it implies that the "tank" had something to do with the weapons being discovered, when in fact it was the man's suicide.

Subby fails.

Don't know whats scarcer. That there are people selling tanks, or that there are so many people selling tanks.

FTFY

I'm not positive subby, But I'm pretty sure that getting shot to death with a shotgun caused him considerably more difficulty than having a "tank" in the back yard.

I think it's pretty clear they guy was mostly just a collector, not keeping guns for the next civil war or whatever. From what I could see, almost everything was a different gun. Not exactly the most efficient way to go if one is going nutjob survivalist.

Looks like a browning .30, browning .50, USAS 12, Thompson, FAL, G3, Cetme, Galil.....

lots of nice iron.

The fine print said it was the Journal News reporting the story.....the paper that published a list of firearm owners and where they live.

Could this guy be a legit FFL class 3 guy but they failed to mention it because they are more douchebag than journalist?

I remember reading last year an article out of the UK where you could order slightly older model tanks. Not Commanders, but one gen back. And they weren't cheap.

shiat, I just got 4k+ rounds of ammo in the mail in the last week.  I'll probably shoot most of it next Tuesday when we get some range time.  Finally!

The tank has rubber wheels and its gun barrel is plugged.

That's an armored car. Which without a gun mounted is a truck with a body made from very thick steel. So he had a truck in his back yard.
