Haddon, 24, faces three felony counts of assault on a peace officer after he reportedly showed up at the Kalispell police station and pepper-sprayed several officers.

It's a felony to pepper spray someone with a gun if he's a cop but completely acceptable to assault unarmed and peaceful civilians with pepper as long as the sprayer is a cop. What a nice legal system.

Apparently Meatloaf toured Montana in 1989.

Yes, I'm sure if a cop randomly broke down your door and pepper sprayed you in the face, he'd get absolutely no consequences whatsoever.  And I'm sure you'll respond to this with non-conspiracy/warrgarbl/fullretard proof of the exact same thing happening somewhere else.  I'm sure.

This happens probably once a week and no...there are no consequences. Surprises me you would say that.

Right, remember how this cop's career got totally destroyed?

Did the cops allow the suspect to live so they can use him as a training dummy later ?

Do you need more than three officers in Montana?

I don't know about "totally destroyed", but he was fired.

FTFA: "I take my job very seriously," the report quoted Pike as saying. "... Any application of force... it's not a thrill ride, it's not, 'Woo hoo, this is gonna be fun, I get to hurt somebody.' That's not it," the report stated Pike to have said. "Grappling [with students] would have escalated the force, whereas pepper spray took 'the fight out of them,'" the report quoted Pike as saying.

Unbelievable. He pretty much proves that all those cynical jokes about tasers and pepper spray being easier to use than physical force and restraint aren't that far from the truth. The guy's a lazy ass who couldn't just pick up and shove the students elsewhere. I mean it's pretty obvious he wasn't that physically fit by the picture, but god damn... those beanpole hipster protesters weren't the fighting sort. There was no fight in them to begin with.

yeah...we do.   for some reason, Kalispell has become a major center for heroin/cocaine.  kind of a crossroads between seattle/minneapolis/salt lake city.  you can buy it in the city park now, just like in the big urban areas.  too bad, really...northwestern Montana is a beautiful, beautiful place.

Cops in Montana know how to use judgement and constraint.  Massive gun ownership, a spirit of independence and a couple million aces of wilderness makes for a polite society.  The cops know they can disappear without a trace if they piss everybody off.

These cops should be commended for using appropriate force. In my neck of the words, this obviously disturbed gentlemen would've been shot dead.

Not condoning the use against the students....

But isnt that the point of pepper spray and tazers? They are easier and less rusky to use?

To be honest, I don't think he'd have gotten very far personally trying to grapple all those protestors one by one, if that were the only alternative.

Not the only alternative. And honestly if they want to be a horse's ass about being pushed elsewhere and fight back, then he can whip out the pepper spray. There are rules of engagement that need to be followed. But those rules weren't really followed -- they were sitting down. Unless he feels the safety of himself or others are at risk... no, sorry. No pepper spray or tasers, I don't care how easy it is to push a button and inflict agony.

The point is that you shouldn't be able to use pepper spray on a person UNLESS it's in the course of making an arrest.  He wasn't arresting them, he was 'softening them up'.
