Was kind of expecting Trent Reznor to be wearing a rabbit suit while a midget danced around, but this is okay too.

Still sounds like a watered down version of the 90s NIN..

I'm okay with new NIN, it'd be silly for a 48 year old husband with 2 kids to be singing about angst and pain and shiat. As much as I love Fragile era NIN. I've accepted this.

The video, however, is farking rediculously stupid.

PSST. David Lynch, check this out:

You're welcome.

That video was f*cking awful and nonsensical. Wasn't even close to with the music or any interesting perspectives, effects, colors, sets, imagery, etc.. The original video of just the reel to reel was far more entertaining.

Was it just me or when the camera vertically shakes over Trent he kinda looks like Twin Peaks Kyle Maclachlan?

put me in the goofy video camp

Now "Crazy Clown Time" is kind of goofy creepy and really weird to imagine him singing it  http://youtu.be/caWXt9lCVrc

Video:  Uh, no.
Song:  Sounds like the same style & chorus as many other post 2010 Reznor tunes.  Same ol same ol.

At least with How to Kill Angels you get a break from that style of singing, right?  Come on Trent, break up with whatshername, you are only really good when you're all angsty and heartbroken.

No, I'd be thrilled if it sounded anything like 90's NIN, watered down or not.

I'd say With Teeth was when NIN as an entity just gave up the ghost. That song sounds like every other song they've put out in the last eight or so years.

Which sucks, because I LOVE older NIN stuff and a lot of the side projects are still amazing (I'm Afraid of Americans reminds me more of 90's NIN and is awesome).

But, yeah, I got pretty excited upon hearing they were working on a "new sound" and it turns out to be the same repetitive dribble with unimaginative boring lyrics and no heart or emotion whatsoever.

*sigh*

The song is alright, I mean the lyrics are meh, but the music is pretty good, and I loved the video.

Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

The video is a decent reflection of the music of NIN over the last eight or so years: meh.

Which is kind of sad, because even if the music isn't what it used to be, there's no reason why the video quality (which is something in which NIN has historically excelled) should have to suffer.

And I'm saying this as a David Lynch fan.

The Fragile is my favorite record of his/their's. lots of diehard-sounding people disagree, but it's an awesome album.

Heh. A friend of mine once ran into him in a bar in New York. Her first question was "Dude, who was she?" His response was "No one, really. Just something to write about."

Agreed, I think The Fragile is Trent's best work. It took a couple years for With Teeth to grow on me, and even then it's only the last 5 or 6 tracks on it that I think are any good. That aside, I have no complaints about any of the rest of his work (I feel like I'm one of maybe 10 people that like Year Zero at times.)
Musically I think this new track is good, I like it. Lyrically it's a bit of the same 'ol from the last couple years, though for what it's worth Trent does tend to re-use the same phrases lyrically since TDS. Video is absolutely terrible, this is NIN and David Lynch? WTF guys?

I'd have to say, what I miss most about older NIN was that guitar sound. You know the one..it had a kind of crunchy distorted scream quality, here's an example at 2:47

Exactly. I am disappoint, ReznorLynch. And frankly, I think the song is merely mediocre too--nothing new or special at all.

I'm not too worried though--I'm still holding out hope for the album, since his singles are historically hit-or-miss and more "pop"y than his full albums anyway.

envirovore: Agreed, I think The Fragile is Trent's best work

I think it's his most fluid, varied, and well-produced complete work--as a huge (double) album. But I still think The Downward Spiral is his "best" in its originality and intensity.

Year Zero has actually really grown on me over time. I hated it even more than With Teeth for a while, but now, when listening to his entire discography, Year Zero is closest to his earliest Broken/TDS stuff. I like it.

I think he hit a lull in terms of his official LPs, but his extracurricular activities have continued to be excellent, even if it's a different direction--Ghosts I-IV is highly underrated, The Slip is one of his best albums, even though it was free, and of course his soundtracks.

No, you're not.  The Fragile is a solid and awesome album.  Year Zero is also really, really good.  With Teeth grew on me, and I appreciated it for good songs like "Every Day is Exactly the Same".  Didn't really like Ghosts or The Slip all that much.

I like How to Kill Angels, and with her wife singing, it's a different feel, but works really well.

/I hate it when people talk about the "good ol' days" of albums like Broken
//Broken was a terrible album

When I listen to the Girl With A Dragon Tattoo soundtrack, I think I must be listening to a completely different album than everyone else because I never saw the movie (though I did see the unabridged Swedish Yellow Bridge TV miniseries, which I understand to be vastly superior to the American remake).  I find tracks like Great Bird Of Prey, A Pause For Reflection, Under The Midnight Sun and Infiltrator to be very good.
