Dear Louisiana and other pigfarker states:
Because you have things like this in your history, you're not allowed to complain about being single out by the VRA.  You've already proven you can't play nicely, and so must have a nanny make sure you don't act like the racist farkwads we all know you are.

The reason things have gotten better in the past 50 years is because nanny has been watching you, not because you'd suddenly stopped being pigfarkers.

JAGChem82: MagicBoris: JAGChem82: bwilson27: JAGChem82:

WTF are you on about?  I didn't vote for Romney.  My team consists of people who actually know something beyond the sound bites they get from either the D's or the R's.

Sure you didn't vote for the R's.... why would you first accuse black voters of voting to get free stuff and Obamaphones? Because NO other white voter EVER voted against a black guy because he was black?

fark you're stupid. Go away.

Shed some more emo tears, buddy.

The point people are trying to get across is that you misunderstood Anderson's Pooper's original statement. He wants to weed out idiots from both sides. You just seem to want to defend your point so bad that you completely disregard what he said.

In other words : fark you're stupid. Go away.

Hey, did bwilson get tired of me and sent someone from the minors to deal with me? Congrats for the call up.

Anyway, if he really wanted to weed out idiots from both sides, he wouldn't be so quick to jump on Obama voters for getting largesse or voting "cause he's black". Were there blacks voting for Obama just because he's a brother? I'm sure that number is greater than zero, yes. But it doesn't explain Kerry's number of black voters in 04, does it? Or Gore's in 00?

And if he's really concerned about weeding out idiots, he'd really want to avoid all those white voters out there who didn't want to vote for no black guy either. How many white guys do you think voted for Romney because of that? Pretty sure that number was greater than zero as well. I mean certainly, we don't want anybody out there, black, white, Latino, whatever, voting as something stupid as skin color, right?

I just couldn't help intervene... you're just that awfully clueless.

The original quote was :

1.  Are you planning on voting for Romney because Obama is black?

Read the words. That exactly means " to avoid all those white voters out there who didn't want to vote for no black guy "
(unless you're trying to trick us with a double negative)

It seems simple enough, but it kind of trailed off there. It's just been WAY too long of a week, so all I can really do is sit, read Fark, and dip honey wheat pretzels in peanut butter and jelly swirled together.

Go ahead...take away my voting rights. There's been no good candidates lately anyway.

Smelly Pirate Hooker: gfid: Smelly Pirate Hooker: Voter turnout for the 2012 primaries in most states was under 20% (per elections.gmu.edu)

In a number of states you're not allowed to vote in a primary unless you're registered with that party.

Which states? In Texas, I (a registered Independent; go ahead and make your jokes) can choose which primary to vote in.

This link has a handy list of basic primary voting rules by state:

Link

I used the primary figures because using the actual 2012 presidential election figures are deceptive: presidential elections always have higher turnouts. But those turnouts aren't typical. I used what I could find fairly quickly.

You can make excuses for people, but it seems that most of them care enough about their voting rights to biatch about attempts to fark with them, but they not enough to do the thing that actually makes a difference: voting. In every election. Including the boring-ass school board, city council, mayoral elections. The ones in which Obama isn't running.

I voted in a municipal runoff election a couple weeks ago. I guarantee you, I was one of the very few. And I live in a city of about 130,000 people. With various voting locations. In a state that allows early voting (for now, but who knows how that may change, after the Republicans get done making sure the dirty whores pay for having sex outside of marriage).

Being a Democratic-leaning voter in a Republican-controlled state sucks. And the people I blame for it being Republican-controlled are not the Republicans.

I agree with everything else you said though - I suppose independents in Closed Primary states could just register for one party or another and vote in the primaries. I'm not sure if there would be any disadvantages to that (I can't think of any).

I think the town I live in (population ~150,000) only had ~30,000 voters in our latest city election and mail-in ballots are actually strongly encouraged so it's amazingly easy to vote. I always drop my mail-in ballot off in person just to make sure it gets there and gets there on time but the post office is actually pretty reliable and quick.

12349876: patentguy: netweavr: The "single wrong answer" criteria would probably have gotten a lot of people who just brain-farted on something.

You're starting to understand.  The person grading might miss an error by a white voter while making sure to find any technical error by a black voter.  It's not the test, it's the grader.

It's not just that, it's who takes the test.  In this situation, if you could prove you had a fifth grade education you didn't have to take it.  They probably found a way to make black schools not count or something like that.

Probably applied the 3/5ths rule: a black's 5th grade edumakation is equal to a white boy's 3rd grade edumakation.

To The Escape Zeppelin!: That sucks as a voter literacy test but it isn't that hard. It's like one of those critical thinking exercises you got in school.

It's actually impossible to pass if you're black, because several of the questions have multiple possible answers, and therefore the white registrar can choose which one is the "real" answer and say you failed because you picked the wrong one.

2013-06-28 09:54:43 PM

12349876: It's not just that, it's who takes the test. In this situation, if you could prove you had a fifth grade education you didn't have to take it. They probably found a way to make black schools not count or something like that.

Back in the days when my parents went to school (1940's - 1950's) in North Carolina, blacks had two issues (out of many) against them where education was concerned... one, the males frequently didn't finish high school (some didn't even get through junior high/middle school) because if you were big enough and old enough, work came first. As long as you could count, do subtraction, addition, multiplication and division and sign your name, you were deemed ready for the workforce and were expected to participate.

Women were expected to stay in school just long enough to find someone to marry. Even so, the ratio of female to male HS grads was almost 8 to 1.

The second issue was that the whites didn't want their schools compared to the segregated schools where blacks went. The local school my parents went to was called "Anson County Training School", not "High School". They got the books and furniture after the whites were finished with them from the school down the road and across the tracks, and their curriculum was up to three years behind. It was renamed in 1960, but the original name was carved into the bricks where it stayed until it was closed in the 80's. Only the gym remains of the original building, used for storage now. The rest is now a church.

Parts of "Evil Dead 2" were filmed in the abandoned school building and around Wadesboro, NC.

I'd have to say that more than half the white population in 1964 would not have passed it.  There are several grammatical doozies that invalidate their own instructions.
Fav "Spell backwards, forwards."

When you're told to "spell" something it is to say it out loud.  The correct answer to this is "b a c k w a r d s" but I figure half of you would have printed "f o r w a r d s".    "Spell backwards; forwards." is the question to the second answer.

A lot of complex instructions and quite probably a very useful test with effective results.  They wanted only fully educated blacks to vote.

1.  Are you planning on voting for Romney because Obama is black?

3. Are you planning to vote for Obama because Romney is a Mormon?

That being said (and at risk of sounding like some literati a-hole) I think it wouldn't be to bad to require voters to at least have a high school diploma (or equivalent), or be required to take a high school exit exam to vote.

Yes... The entire point of the test is to make multiple answers possible so that the person grading the test could decide if you passed based upon more, uh, visible traits. Besides, I'm not sure is Louisiana is one of those states that did, but many states had an easy and hard version of the tests - again, the poll worker decides which test you get. This had absolutely nothing to do with wanting only educated people voting.

Notice how one looks like it was typed or printed in 1963, and the other looks like it came off a mid-1990s word processor?

Now, literacy tests existed. Tests about the Constitution, etc., existed. And they were used in exactly the way you'd think--there's no controversy about that whatsoever. But it's entirely possible that the thing shown in this  Slate article isn't even a transcription of a real document--it smells a bit wrong, and (argument from authority alert) I'm a twentieth-century American historian. It's almost too cute, and the white registrar turning black voters away from the polls in 1964 Louisiana didn't need to be cute.

Now that you have pointed it out, I think you're right.  It does look like it came out of a modern word processing program and not a 1960s era typewriter.  I think it's a fugazi.

Being poor is a choice. Choosing to be poor means you are a douche, and should not be deciding how hard working people's tax dollars are spent, because you would always want someone else to work and have money given to you. That is not sustainable when you consider poor people have many more children and they tend to be poor as well. Eventually, you run out of other people's money to spend.

BZZ, wrong.  The "number or letter of the line" is the "1".  Circle that ... ignoring that a circle is not a "line".

29)every word THIS line Print THIRD in line

BZZ, wrong.
"every word this line PRINT third in line,

Honestly #29 isn't even a grammatical sentence or even a grammatical phrase.

Did you miss the part where I explained to you that many of the questions on the test are purposefully ambiguous?

Are you really so thick that you can't see that the answer I provided is satisfactory given a perfectly legitimate alternative interpretation of the question?  (The point was to show you that there can be more than one correct answer as the questions are ambiguous!)

To your answer specifically, I can think of a couple ways to dispute it.  If you were black, and I didn't want you to vote I could object that the line you drew was not closed as the questions asks for a line around, not part-way around.  I could also object to circling either the word "number" or "letter" as the question asks you to circle the number or letter of the question, not in the question.

The point of the test wasn't to make a test so difficult that very few black people could pass.  The point was to make a test that is impossible to pass, due to the ambiguity of the questions.

I can't believe that I had to explain that to you.

After seeing this Mississippi literacy test on display at the LBJ Presidential Library, I have a hard time believing TFA test is real:

Zemog: If you lack the life skills to acquire a photo ID, we're all better off without your vote.

unless you are elderly, born in a rural area where record keeping was spotty at best and the records aren't available. or you don't drive and the photo ID office is open on alternate wednesdays from 1-3 PM only and located in bumfark, yourstate. or they require a $50 processing fee for each of the three documents you need and it as to be cash only. and form one requires a single $50, form two requires 2 $20 and a ten and form three requires ten fives. oh you didn't know that? please come back next wednesday. oh that's a holiday the wednesday after that.

I'm watching Ferris Bueller's Day off right now, and I just got past the parade "Shake it on Baby Now," scene, and all the actual dancers are black.  Yeah some of the crowd scenes had white people, but the actual choreographed dancers were all black.  I watched it twice to make sure.  It's around the 1:04 minute mark.  Never noticed before, but really, how farked up is that?

/check it out on Netflix and correct me if I'm wrong.

JAGChem82: To your second point, every politician provides "free stuff" to their constituents. Tax cuts, fewer regulations, etc. But people don't consider those gifts - only cheap phones are gifts.

Care to explain exactly how letting someone keep their own property is giving them a gift?

Dman33: How in the world could one draw a LINE AROUND something? A LINE?? Unpossible!

It didn't say a straight line.  A circle is still a line.
