(Opposing Views)   Cops mistakenly draw their guns on an innocent sorority girl. She panics and flees. Did the cops respond to this by: a) apologizing for their mistake, b) letting her go, or c) arresting and charging her anyway?   (opposingviews.com) divider line 279

'Cops' is being misleading.  A gang of thugs tried to jump her and her friend, so naturally they ran.  Plain clothed cops in unmarked cars are indistinguishable from common thugs.

This. Figured she had to be white.

Because God forbid you do some actual goddamn police work.  It's much easier to just drastically escalate the situation far beyond what is necessary.

Not surprised.

My fiancé was driving to school one day, when a guy cut him off. To be fair, my fiancé did start driving a bit like a dick (aggressive acceleration, may have cut the other guy off). A different car, a blue Honda Civic pulls up next to him, but my fiancé just stares straight ahead, ignoring the driver. The Civic follows him to college, where it pulls up behind him after he parks, doors fly open, and there are two plain-clothes officers with guns drawn who proceed to yell at my fiancé about how they will blow his head off if he so much as moves. My fiancé's infraction? He didn't acknowledge them when they pulled up beside him.

The car was unmarked, so there was no way my fiancé could have known they were cops, and yet they expected him to act like he knew they were. Somehow, I always manage to have decent experiences with cops, but my fiancé catches hell.

/blames the show "Cops" more than anything. Normalizes really shiatty behavior.

That's right around the corner from me.

Just another reason to shop Kroger at the other end of the strip mall. The cops never stake out that one because it's easily a couple of hundred yards farther away from grounds.

This is what happens when you have a paramilitary-trained police force in a town with almost no violent crime. Need to go find some crime, ANY CRIME, to justify your existence.

This.

Vice cops do one thing useful: pursue kiddie porn jackoffs. Beyond that, they are just buzzkills.

That said, do not run from cops; you are always in the wrong when you run from cops.

Gee, now I'm torn on if we should follow typical police  "safety advice" along the lines of "If you're approached by a strange men (or group of men) and one pulls a gun on you, get in your car. Do not open the windows. Drive away to a safe location." Which is what the sorority girl tried to do.

Perhaps the new advice is: "if some stranger approaches you in a threatening manner, do whatever he tells you to do. He might be a cop." Gosh, that sure sounds like smart advice. Pfft.

Oh, there's plenty of street prostitution in Charlottesville down on Cherry ave. But I guess they needed a change of pace and beating on some homeless guys down by the Greyhound station lost its caché.

"You don't know all the facts until you complete the investigation."

The cops that were there certainly knew all the facts before deciding to arrest her, so what's their excuse?

I was thinking more along the lines of The Usual Suspects.

"Think you brought enough guys?"

DA dropped the charges because it made sense or the real story, the sorority girls are related to some folks who can make phone calls to the DA in the middle of the night.

Anyone else would still be in jail facing charges.

The don't even do that well. They have to troll message boards and spend weeks to entrap random dumbasses to do what any Russian hacker could do better and catch the real criminals with a few hundred bucks' worth of server equipment and a broadband connection.

It's a good thing that she hadn't purchased a Snapple drink and Skittles.  Otherwise she would be dead.

From TFA:
"Once she realized who they were, Daly apologized but the ABC agents her with three felonies. She got two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer for lightly grazing two of the officers with her vehicle and one count of eluding police Those charges were withdrawn on Thursday, reported."

So the "usual" stupid thing happens to a white chick so now it's news? Of course.

It's common, if some police think you did something for whatever reason and come on strong, but you didn't do anything and so in your "wait, wut?" response you seem to be "resisting" in any way shape or form, you get charged with "resisting arrest" - doesn't matter if the thing they were trying to arrest you for has any basis whatsoever, that "resisting" can live on long after any other charges have been dropped.

But hey, if you point that out or protest that in any way shape or form well you're just "cop haters" and so you better get ready for more pressure.

Lightly grazing them with her vehicle?  Something tells me this article was written to make our damsel in distress look as innocent as possible.

I was driving up to where the road comes down to a single lane and the other lane ends.  In my mirror I see a blck SUV barreling up from behind in the ending lane.  All I see is Batman license plate. I didn't let him in.

He gets behind me. Blap!  Lights and siren.  He's a county cop.

"Batman" tells me he gets the right of way because "he was in front."  Batman's law.

In Illinois, even county cop cars have to have two real license plates.

I hire a lawyer who is relishing the idea of crushing the cop.  The coward doesn't show up in court.  Batman was a wimp.
