Oh, yeah, this guy was one of the legion of bums, er, I mean the sainted homeless, who infest downtown Chapel Hill. He was one of the crowd that hangs out at the BofA crosswalk area pestering people for change.

Sheesh, when the case first hit the papers I remembered seeing him and his backpack on the corner, mooching money off the suckers. Glad I didn't know what was in the backpack at the time.

I DNRTA.  But I do have something to say about bakcpacks...

See, jerkoffs like those bombers in Boston have really screwed things up for people like me.  I can't bring a backpack with me anywhere any more without it being searched.  Not like I have a lot to hide...  But please...  I like some privacy and less hassle.

See...  This is the thing...  When my son was first born, like 14 years ago, it wasn't uncommon for both he and my wife to be passed out sleeping at 7:00 at night.  So, for lack of anything else to do, I would go to the movies.  Since I don't like paying concession stand prices for, well, anything, I would bring my own food, in a backpack.

There were cops right there in the theater.  Never once did I get searched.  This is actually a good thing, because I always brought a few beers with me too...  (This is Fark after all, so it's okay to point that out.)

But I can't do that any more.  I would SO get arrested if I even tried.

Why do you plead guilty if you think you won't get a fair trial?

I love that his defense is that he just found the remains and planned to use them, the remains, for sexual gratification.

It's been about 8 years since I graduated, but is there any chance "4 quarters" is still there?  God he was annoying, he never asked for "a dollar," or "some change," always "hey man, you got 4 quarters?"  I got so sick of him, I had to walk past him to class every damn day...

/I guess it could have been worse, he could have had a decaying hooker in a backpack by his side

His arrest came after one of his friends told authorities that Dorman admitted to killing a prostitute and had asked for help disposing of her remains, which he had in a backpack. Dorman told investigators, however, that he only found the remains and planned to use them for his sexual gratification.

Tall skinny black dude? Yeah, he's a pest. I think he's got some sort of mental deficiency so I just ignore him instead of telling him to fark off.

Yeah, it's gotten much worse - to the point that the students don't come downtown much after dark and several businesses have gone under due to the decrease in walking traffic. Pepper's Pizza went under two months ago, they had been there for ages. Ben and Jerry's closed. School Kids Records closed. Even The College Shop, the place that sold UNC-logo wear, went out of business. Hell, I don't even like walking down Franklin Street in the middle of the day, I walk up West Franklin now for lunch. Got tired of people getting in my face.

Couple months ago I witnessed a bum fight and caught the video on my phone. Gave it to the Downtown Merchant's Association to use in their ongoing battle with the Town Council over the problem. They showed the video at a council meeting - but since everyone on the council lives out in suburbia, they once again ignored the problem.

This guy is most certainly a mental patient but why did the DA destroy evidence?
He should have had a fair trial so there wouldn't be anyone whining about the judicial process when they lit him up like a Christmas tree.

I'd also like to know where he got a shotgun if he was a homeless beggar.

UsikFark: Why do you plead guilty if you think you won't get a fair trial?

He plead guilty to manslaughter to avoid being found guilty of murder.

He admitted to necrophilia so he's absolutely guilty of something, but exactly what and determining the appropriate punishment is complex. He claims he didn't kill the victim and the District Attorney willfully destroyed evidence that might have proven his case. That the DA lost her job based on her actions, and the current prosecution is willing to accept his lesser plea adds a little credibility to his claim.

As for the accused, as aself-admitted corpse diddler, there's not much of a"good name" to fight for. With no physical evidence to exonerate him, he's smart to go the practical route and minimize his loses.

There once was a man named Dave,
Who kept a dead whore in a cave.
He said, "I admit."
"I'm a bit of a shiat."
But look at the money I save.

Ah. Since he's apparently homeless and crazy *maybe* he will get stuck in a psych facility instead of PMITA prison.

Michael Dorman, 35, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Lakiea Lacole Boxley. He was sentenced to five to seven years in prison and was given credit for the three years he's already spent behind bars.

7 years, for intentionally killing someone? Aren't there people serving longer mandatory minimums for crack? WTF?

2013-06-28 02:27:13 PM
Dorman shot Boxley in the head with a shotgun, and when that didn't kill her, he strangled her.

And all he gets is 5-7 years? WTF?

NC's psych facilities are a disgrace - most are run by political hacks with no background in medicine or psychiatric care. Every couple of months there's  a story in the papers about some patient death or maltreatment. The psych hospital in Morganton was being run by a former deputy sheriff (!) who spent all the security budget on a Hummer to use as his staff car. This was discovered when two patients wandered off and froze to death.

So, he might be better off in prison. But the better chance, if he's homeless AND crazy, is that he'll be back on the streets of Durham or Chapel Hill (or Asheville) asking for spare change or cigarettes.

I've read "true weird stories" books about plenty of psychiatric hospitals that left patients crazed, sick, and filthy. Then I can read stories in the paper like one where the orderlies were making the patients fight each other like a cage match. You'd have to be crazy ordered by a judge to want to go to that kind of facility for "care."
