I was just coming in here to post that it must be nice for Rick Perry to have at least one person in the state that he can look down on intellectually, but you kinda said the same thing in a different way.

This is just.... wow....  And there are Democrats supporting this bill as well.  Farking Texas.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live!"

"Said Gohmert, concluding his speech, "Folks, our forebears burned witches. If you believe Exodus, we ought to do the same. All we are advocating for is a superior tool for law enforcement. All we want to do is fight terror-at home, just as we do abroad."

I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Like you can tell anymore with these people...

FTA: Capitol police were called to intervene when, at some point, a Pendler seated behind Rep. Wasserman-Schultz managed to briefly set her skirt on fire with a cigarette lighter. No arrests were made-and, according to this source, the ignition of said skirt had been meant as a joke-but the whole affair has cast a pall over Mr. Gohmert's anti-witchcraft campaign.

WOW!

I can't speak for the other 30 libs that will come in here and start frothing because of DNRTA-itis, but this lib says "yes".

Unfortunately, it didn't go far enough from reality to be readily identified as such.  Satire might be dead, not from a lack of intellectual or cultural ability, but because conservative reality already contains so much hyperbole you don't have the head room you need to make something satirical.

2013-06-28 01:45:21 PM
Is there a non-blog source for this? I mean, it's all too likely to be real, but google is just throwing up blogs for me and I'd like something a bit more trustworthy.

It's satire now, but give Texas a little more time.

Poe's Law strikes once again. I genuinely believe Go-Go-Gohmert being not only capable, but plausible in taking this stance.

These people. Damn.

I think some really simple common sense rules apply here:

It might be satire if:

1) The story is unbelievable ridiculous
2) And isn't covered by any actual news outlet despite being so ridiculous

I was gonna say, with all the stupid, crazy, offensive things Gohmert actually says, do we really need to greenlight things he didn't?

Ridiculous, yes, but as others have pointed out, it's entirely believable that Gohmert could have said these idiotic things. Dems supporting the bill may be more unbelievable.

Yeah, asshole, well we(and by we, I mean western civilization) used to persecute Christians too. Maybe its high time we brought back some of those traditions. Forcing you to live in the sewer. Banning the public expression of your faith, dispersing groups of you.

You have proven to be dangerous to humanity. Violent and fundamentalist. Most unable to follow or understand even the most basic tenets of your own faith. Therefore, PARIAH status for you.

It's not unbelievably ridiculous considering that a Republican candidate for the US Senate aired a commercial assuring Republicans, 'I'm not a witch'.

2013-06-28 02:22:50 PM
I didn't see any major media coverage of the Texas filibuster either. That also must have been satire.

You realize she didn't do that unsolicited, right?  Bill Maher replayed a bunch of clips of her, one of which she said she dabbled in witch craft a long time ago.  There's a big difference between that and a Texas lawmaker thinking that witchcraft is such a problem it needs to be legislated.

For fair consideration, the story seemed believable because it fit the preconceived notions of people who dislike Representative Gohmert.

/Conservatives who believe satire say the same thing.

MSNBC.

Live streaming coverage online.

Constant updates on Facebook from Emily's List.

If it was satire and/or a hoax, the production values were pretty f*cking incredible, including the live streaming video that somehow had exact duplicates of Texas lawmakers on the production set made up to look like the Capitol.

Our forebears didn't burn anybody.  All the witches at Salem were hanged.

The only difference is she did not get elected.

A Republican US Senate candidate made witchcraft an issue in her campaign. Normal people would have laughed offf the accusation.

Judging from the rest of the comment section, no, we won't.

Yes. But it's not too much of a stretch to believe something such as this could come out of that assclown's mouth.

I live in Texas.  What the fark makes you think this is Satire?  I'm watching news 8 right now waiting to see if this comes up.

What proof do you have that this is satire?  Because this is right along what we deal with here in Austin on a regular basis.

Even if you truly believe in Poe's Law, once  Debbie Wasserman-Schultz  refers to Gohmert as "a cretinous hayseed", that really should be the ballgame.

Pundits might call politicians that, but no Rep is going to insult another Rep quite that openly.  ("Who cares?" aside)

The part where they set Debbie Wasserman-Schultz on fire, however, should have been a dead giveaway.  Gohmert has never actually set a congressional colleague on fire for being a witch.
