Blackberry is dead, WP never really lived, iOS is falling, Android is sorta plateauing.

Time for the actual next big thing to step on up.

I am glad Blackberry is soon to be gone.

Aside from Ubuntu tablet and Firefox OS, there really isn't anything in the pipeline.  People have spent hundreds of dollars in apps and in-app purchases and don't want to lose it.  They're going to stick with their brand until they're forced to switch.

Basically the only thing keeping them afloat is government contracts.  They make the only NSA-approved encrypted mobile device, for the military and various law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Quit BlackBerry some time ago and glad to be gone. A lot of great ideas, a lot of really, really bad management. Too many people who can't let a good idea be, but have to modify it, for better or (usually) worse, just to have their name attached to it.

That and they just got overrun by Nortel cancer among many other people who were just awful at their jobs but promoted and retained for their politics and bootlicking.

IBM owned the OS and PC market.

Their tablet was always half finished, with none of the features promised by RIM.  The Z10 and Q10 are nice phones for 2 years ago, but feel like they've been aimed at the smartphone competition of last year.  These phones should have been out to capture the crowds when there was still a lot of interest in Blackberry devices.  Now they're trying to lure back people who've abandoned ship to other platforms and no longer have any interest in Blackberry.  They're a nice step up from the old Curves and Bolds, and will probably continue to sell pretty decent to the dedicated people who have held on to those phones awaiting their contracts to expire to pick up the BB10 devices, but that hardcore crowd is dwindling.  The app selection is ridiculous, and the solution of installing Android apps doesn't seem to be worth a damn.  If someone wants to get an Android app, they may as well get an Android phone to install it on.  BBM is coming to the other platforms, chipping away at one of the few things that kept people moderately interested in Blackberry.  Unless something big happens, they'll be the next Palm.

A friend recently tried out the Q10 for a few weeks. She loved it but in the end returned it due to lack of apps. Which is funny because RIM is terrible when it comes to dealing with developers. Even if you believe in the platform and ignore the current audience size, developing for Blackberry is a pain. People make fun of Balmer for his "Developers! Developers! Developers!" monkey dance but it really does matter.
