ElLoco: Back in the day when vehicle fuel tanks were exposed and could be dented in by road debris and such, the mechanics would fill the tank all the way up the neck, then braze pull rods to the tank for pulling the dent out. The fuel acted as a sink to prevent burnthrough. As they pulled the dent, they kept adding fuel so a vapor-filled cavity didn't form in the tank. The other option (which was the proper method) was to remove the tank and fill it completely full of water before pulling the dent. The first way was faster./lawn
